But Senfen, don't you get the American mangas in Australia?
It depends, its gotten better, or I've gotten better at finding them ^^. There are two major shops in the city that stock them, borders and a very cool place called minotor. But its hard if you want something in particular. Way to often I try to get something (Fruits... -.-) and they'll have issue 2 and 5 and the 1st issue isnt coming in for 2 months then its sold the day before you get there ahhhh!.... plus imports are expensive. -.-.

As for anime.... lets just say it costs $50 for an InuYasha DVD as it has to be imported. I just have to pray that FMA will end up cheap and accessable but as they're not showing it on TV right now its getting less and less likely. Though I must admit we're probably a lot better off than a lot of other countries. Still I'd rather get it free...
Guest
Well Senefan, I've heard that a certain Australian comic shop chain imports ChuangYi comics from Singapore. So you can get ChuangYi FMA English version when they are published next year.

I have the same problem in my city... And there's only one shop! T.T Fortunatly, there's another shop I can command from the internet from.

Perhaps you should arrange for a user in the forums whom you trust to sell you the manga volumes via Ebay?
There's really plenty of stock of FMA volumes in Singapore for example. Volume 9 just came out in Mandrain.. It would add up to about the same price it'll cost eventually when your local comic store gets around to importing FMA.

Yebyosh says
Just for information's sake, Arakawa-sensei had announced in a long-ago interview that FMA was planned for 7 years. As a monthly series, it is then reasonable to assume that the total FMA run would be around 84 chapters, inclusive of Gaidens. Therefore FMA should be approximately 20 volumes total.

i've see in itnernet some images of the manga that i've ever see in the chapter until 43...
this means that the comics go ahead in a magazine like shonen jump before thet it is collect in volumes, right? So, how many chapter there are? dry.gif
Ryuu
Where do you guys read fma manga? I have read only 34 chapters..
Ah, I hope there will be many books, because there is only 51 episodes of anime. Why Arakawa can't make more episodes... sigh
Kitty Cat
In Hong Kong here it has only released/translated up to Volume 9.. so volume 10 isnt out yet?
Guest
The Japanese volume 10 only got released on the 10th of this month. Give Jade Dynasty time to translate it...
Guest
The chinese FMA vol10 is out!! I saw both taiwan and hongkong's publication.
The omakes at the back are very funny as usual, especially the"what if Alphonse and Edward had switched places"! laugh.gif
Then they made fun of the making of chapter 38 by having Arakawa talk with the editor and they were going,
A: So we leave the boobs in?
E: We cannot do without the boobs!!!

The inside cover is also funny with Winry's plot to become the lead character laugh.gif
Kitty Cat
so.... volume 11 isnt out? Because i just finished reading up to chapter 45 and 10 only ends at 41..

(I just bought volume 10 yesterday![I went to sha tin manga shop and saw it ... its in hong kong] It was so funny the part where "What if al and ed switched places" I was laughing so much!)

~ Character Importance!, Or "How Sensenic wastes his free time!" ~

So, some time ago I noticed that there's a actually a way to mathematically measure the Character's Importance in the FMA plot: by the difference between the moment they appeared for the first time till they got their portrait in the Volume Spine!

reader: dry.gif
.... *deadly silence*

No, not RLY happy.gifU, I just noticed this some time ago when wanting to point out the importance of Ling (dun remember why, maybe sum1 said he was only a secondary character? Maybe just out of sheer fanboyism? Who knows. His importance is quite clear now )...
Anyway this is just a little spare-time and certainly in no way an actual method of anything... The main things are that, being only one character per volume, pushing-backs are gonna happen, and that there's also the "S/He had an important role specifically in that volume" criterium. But, well, it DOES hint a little, as they're obviously going to put first those characters who are certainly more important; you wouldn't expect to find Yoki in the spine of Vol. 1, would you?

Let us see, between parenthesis first volume they appeared (Officially, foreshadowings not counting) and volume they got the spine:

LEVEL 1 CHARACTERS:
Those who appear in the spine of the very same volume they first appeared in.
*drums*
-- The Fullmetal Alchemist: Edward Elric! (1-1)
Well, duh...

LEVEL 2 CHARACTERS:
Those who appear in the spine of the next volume after the one they first appeared in. First (little) surprises here!
*drums*
-- The Armor Alchemist (unofficial name tongue.gif): Alphonse Elric! (1-2)
Very important character, probably just pushed back by his big brother, as usual. Boy isn't or hasn't he been he ever jealous AT ALL?

-- The Loving Housewife Alchemist (made-up title tongue.gif) and strict master: Izumi Curtis! (5-6)
She DID play a very important role in the Elrics' life... Not so much in the manga plot per se, tho'. But 6 was her main volume indeed.

-- The Never Aging Alchemist, and misterious and irresponsible father: Van Hohemheim! (10-11)
Wow! Now, did they rush to put him there, didn't they? They could've waited more, as with other characters, but guess he has some main-roling to do, doesn't he?

LEVEL 3 CHARACTERS:
I'll let you guess
*drums*
-- The Flame Alchemist: Colonel Roy Mustang! (1-3)
Lower than expected! But logical, as it was another push-back, this time by Alphonse... In this volume he hardly did anything special, though.

-- The Nameless Alchemist-killing Alchemist: Scar! (2-4)
Logical position for him, I believe... After the Alphonse and Roy pushing, things got back to its place. I believe.

-- The Automail Geek: Winry Rockbell! (3-5)
Again another character who is more important to the characters than to the main plot per se. So... I also think she's in the right place. And Volume 5 HAD her most shining moments indeed (i.e. helping in the birth and going independent).

-- And, finally! The Greedy and Ambitious Xing-Emperor-Wannabe: Ling Yao! (8-10)
Only pushed back by 2 characters who were way pushed themselves and deserved to be there, the Prince is up there with Roy, Scar and Winry! So there! (Who am I arguing with, I do not know... tongue.gif And how many times did I say 'there' there? happy.gifU)

Now for the runner-ups...
LEVEL 4:
*drums*
-- The Angry Amestris Leader: Führer King Bradley, AKA Wrath! (4-7)
Sorry Neph tongue.gif But I think it's a good cathegory for him, so far... Oh, he would become lower cathegory if we take in mind his first appearance was in the Gun no Matsuri Gaiden, at Vol. 2. But whatever.
However, the fact he's there in volume 7, instead of Greed or Armstrong, I think kind of "proves" my point that they put first more important characters before "one-volume shining" ones, such as was the case of Greed in 7. IMHO.

LEVEL 5:
*drums*
-- The Xingese Imaginative Rentanjutsushi: Mei Chan/g! (8-12)
No comments here. We have yet to see about this gal...

And no one else till...
LEVEL 7:
*drums*
-- The Strong Arm Alchemist: Major Alex Louis Armtrong! (2-8)
Altho' his role is significant and his shining moments were in Volume 2 and 7, the guy got pushed all the way till here by... who? More important characters! You get the idea?

Jump one....
LEVEL 9:
*drums*
-- The Loyal Subordinate (or more than that? tongue.gif) and First-Class Shooter: First Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye! (1-9)
Poor girl... She got for her a rather "transitional" volume... She does "shine" in this one tho' (like all the military guys, since this one's theirs), and certainly she had been earning the spot for a while.

Whatever.

What be thine thoughts, ppl?

EDIT: Rich formatting makes better reading
EDIT2, To Nepharski: That's why I was betting for Father to be in Volume 13, because if he shows up there, he'd be the next First Class Character (13-13), as the main antagonist, 'n stuff, ya know? It'll probably be Envy tho'.

Actually I am expecting Father to be on the spine of volume 14 since he has a bigger role in that volume, especially in Chapter 54. Of course it could also possibly be Ranfan, I think she needs her moment to shine.

On volume 13 I expect the spine to hold either Gluttony or Envy as both had fairly large parts in this volume.

Interesting post Senefen I think this proves that when the character appears on the spine doesn't necessarily signify their importance. I would think Roy, Riza, and Winry should all be in higer categories than they are, especially Riza. smile.gif

I would also consider Al a level 1 character but as there could only be one character both in the first book and the first spine Ed was the obvious choice.

I agree, Roy is very important, more than Hohenheim I believe. And Winry IS the main female character, with Riza being the next.

Basically, I agree with Kirara about everything she had just said. Al should be level 1 character, he's just as important. And Envy is likely the next choice, I mean, JUST LOOK HOW HIS APPEARANCE NUMBER NOW!

Well, what I've always thought is that characters were listed in order of importance, but also appearance. Hohenheim, for example, is obviously a more important character than, say, Armstrong, but he doesn't appear till later, so we can't have him in the single digits.

Such Father exists mostly in after the chapters covered in Volume 13, I believe he'll be featured on the spine for Volume 14. Envy, however,p played a HUGE part in the story, especially during Volume 13. Envy's not a character I see dying any time soon, so I imagine Envy's pretty important.

OT - Speaking of Volume 14, I speculate it will feature Father, Monster Envy, Gluttony, and Greed 2.0 on the cover, as the form the main attraction of that segment.

I was just saying that they MIGHT put Father in the very first volume he appears because it'd kind of would be a way to give him much importance (since he is so far the main antagonist/evil guy, and the likes), as he'd be the only "First Class" chara, up there with Ed.

LOL, actually it rather meant to "prove" the opposite, if anything at all happy.gifU

I meant that the volume spines do hint about the importance of the characters, always taking in mind that there's the pushing-back and the "one-volume shining" factors.

EDIT: Oh, and again, I believe Winry and Riza to have more importance as "support characters" than as "plot characters" per se. I'm not saying they're not important (God forbid), just that, main-plot-wise, characters such as Roy, Hohemheim or Ling are more important, whereas the girls are important to them.
I dunno how to explain myself better, I mean... They're very important characters, of course, but.... ah, just forget it. I just don't know how to say it and it's not important anyway happy.gifU

Hmmm, it is another criterium I didn't consider... And it is much possible indeed. Yes.

Although the example you put is not the case, I believe. I mean, Hohemheim hadn't even appeared by the time Armstrong got his spine...

Ah, here's a point I wanted to get to...

Yes Father first appeared long before... but not his face. Remember that what gets to the spine is the left side of the character's face (at least, so far), and Daddy's wrinkly one didn't show up till volume 13, so that's what I considered.

Redefinition: When I say first appearance, I mean the first time the character was shown full-frontal (pun intended tongue.gif), or at least his/her face, foreshadowings not counting.

That'd be it. happy.gif

~ Fma Us Releases Late 2007, Second Art Book and Novels 4 & 5 ~

Well at work today I was doing a curious search update and it looks like we have more FMA goodies coming along with volumes 14 and 15 late 2007.

OCTOBER
Art of Fullmetal Alchemist 2
Fullmetal Alchemist Novel #4

DECEMBER
Fullmetal Alchemist Novel #5 - To Each Their own Bonds

While its odd that the fourth novel's title is not revealed, at least this shows that the Novels are still being published!

So tune in and ENJOY.
Alchemical
Thanks for the info^^ I knew about the novels, but didn't know about a new art book coming with them.

I can't wait for the novels! smile.gif
Amalthea
I'm ecstatic for the art book. smile.gif Arakawa's skills are amazing.

I "fell" on this topic doing a research, and I wonder : where is Kimblee? He is on the spine of Vol. 15, the Vol. where he "truly" makes an appearance (we have hardly seen his face before, only his hands in fact!). Should we consider him on the same level than Ed because he is the most dangerous villain so far, right after Wrath?
Becca-chan
I kind of think that Kimbley's becoming a much more important character now.. although the only fact I can come up with to back up this claim.. is the fact that he seems to know about a lot of the things that are happening within the world of Amestris.

I have a feeling that Riza's going to have a fairly big part to play soon, as well.
Again, my only claim for that is for the fact on what's been happening in the latest chapters.
Sword Alchemist
I'm hoping that Maria Ross will have an important role soon.
I hope that Maria having to flee to Xing isn't Arakawa's(sp) way of being done with her character.
titanomega
Do you know how many chapters are there in the FMA manga. Also, have all the volumes released in Japan.
Reta McClain
The answer to both of those is "no". Arakawa is still working on the manga and we're currently waiting for chapter 72 to be realeased (I think the RAW comes out next weekend...)

This should probably be logged...
Tombow
Thanks, Reta McClain!! happy.gif

@titanomega - Welcome to our board!! biggrin.gif
Currently, there are 71 chapters, and we are waiting for the chapter 72 that's coming out in Japan on June 12.
In Japan they had up to volume 16 published. Next will be volume 17. smile.gif
You may find this thread useful. ^^

BTW, if you feel like, please stop by Newcomers thread, and post your "hi"!!
Our board's welcome hosts would love to meet you there!! ^^

I was wondering how many manga books there are. I have 9-12( I am buying the series backwards, my first book was number 10, lol) and everytime I go into chapters(which is not very often dry.gif ) they have one more new one and what about the chapter books? how many are there of those? There is a artwork book for the manga and the anime and same with character profiles, are there any other books like that?

Fullmetal Alchemist is STILL ONGOING. No one knows exactly how many volumes there will be. Can't you see that we have a new chapter thread every month, to show that it's still ongoing, as a monthly series?

A new chapter every month, and that makes a new volume about every 4 months (about 3 volumes every year), which is why you WON'T see a new volume out every week if you visit the bookstore weekly.

I believe only ONE character profile book has been released in English. There are 2 in Japanese and another one called FMA DX which is has a lot of fan-submitted art and other random stuff.

There's also 4 FMA novels released in English. 6 in Japanese if I remember correctly.

and every answer to your questions can be found in this section of the forum if you have spent a few more minutes reading them.

BTW, there was also another thread that was opened with a similar question as yours, and got the answer posted. That's on page 2 of this forum. Next time, you can look around the forums first, and see what we have in the forum, and see if there is/are already threads that contain answers to your question before you open a new thread. smile.gif

(AA battery was not talking about reading every chapter... she said "answer to your questions can be found in this section of the forum" ^^)

Please check out FMA Official Publications thread. And if you get any more question after that then let us know. smile.gif

And, by the way, if you like, you can read English scanlated version of FMA manga right here, on READMANGA through our board!! (Currently up to chapter 67, and NO download..read only.)
Just click on Manga on the Left side Menu of the forum page.

ello, finally im here again;p Havent been here for ages.. almost 3 years since i was here, weeee:
anyway, i found out that manga still going(?) so i have some queistion

Does chapters comes every week?
how many chapters have came out since the anime ended and which chapternumber should i start on?

This would have been better here, but I'll answer your questions.

The chapters come out monthly, usually around the 12th. I'm not sure how many chapters have come out since the anime, but, if I were you, I'd just start from the beginning and re-read what you've already read to refresh your memory.

~ Fma Manga Chapter Scan Providers, Call to arms! ~

Is anyone else fed up with the scanlation scene as of late? For like 3 months now it's been crappy, low quality raws, someone different scanning every month (with various results), and a general lack of action. This is especially frustrating for me as I usually get the whole chapter translated the day it comes out, and they're always SO FREAKING AWESOME.

So here's a call to arms - We need someone who can scan FMA in high quality every month (~3100px height) around the time we usually get it (around the 9th-12th each month), not a week later.. If you live on the US west coast, in Japan, China, Hong Kong, or just have a Japanese bookstore nearby that gets Gangan every month, consider scanning FMA! I've got plenty of scanlator contacts I can tap to do the cleaning/typesetting, but the reason I haven't bothered asking yet is because of the raw situation.

Contact me if you or anyone you know can help.

do you normally check share/winny/perfect dark for scans?
if you get no response here, that might be your best bet.
