Chapter 8: The Road of Hope

Page 4:
sfx: sniff sniff
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Oh Edward Elric! I’ve heard so much about you!”
sfx: squeeze!
--------------------------
Armstrong: “The pure love that led you to try to resurrect your dead mother.” “The brotherly love that made you risk your own life to bring back your younger brother’s soul!”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “I am so moved!
Ed: “Stay back.”

Page 5:
Ed: “Uh...so who told him all about me, Colonel?
Mustang: “Well, when the Major is leaning on you, it’s hard not to tell him what he wants.”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Knowing the details of your past...”
sfx: ahem
--------------------------
Armstrong: “...that’s why I’ve decided to escort you on your trip to your engineer.”
Ed: “HUH?!”
--------------------------
Ed: “You must be crazy, I don’t need a guard!”
Hawkeye: “Edward.”
--------------------------
Hawkeye: “You’re planning to travel around in that state when Scar could attack you at any moment?” “Of course we’re going to assign a guard to you. Otherwise, you’d be totally defenseless.”
Havoc: “Plus with your arm the way it is, you won’t be able to carry Al, either.”
--------------------------
Ed: “But it doesn’t have to be the Major.” Ugh

Page 6:
Hughes: “I got a tone of work waiting for me back in Central...”
Mustang: I can’t leave the East Headquarters.”
--------------------------
Hawkeye: “I’m to busy babysitting the Colonel. Someone has to keep an eye on him.”
Havoc: “I don’t think I can protect you from someone that dangerous.”
Breda, Falman, Fuery: “Our thoughts exactly.”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “So, it’s decided!”
sfx: smak
Ed: “Nothing’s ‘decided’!”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Now, you boys, please listen to your elders.”
Ed: “Don’t treat me like a kid!!”
--------------------------
Ed: “Why you...” “Hey Al! Are you gonna take that?!”

Page 7:
Al: “Oh, Ed! This is the first time that someone’s treated me like a kid since my body became armor!” Woww!
Ed: It’s no use...
--------------------------
Mustang: “If you still plan on making a fuss, would you prefer to be court-martialed for disobeying orders?!” ha ha ha ha ha
Ed: “What?! You dirty...!"
Armstrong: “Hmh...now that it’s decided, let’s pack up.”
--------------------------
sfx: ta-da
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Baggaging fees are cheaper than travel fees!”
Al: “This is the first time someone’s treated me like luggage since my body became armor."
Ed: "My poor brother..."

Page 8:
Armstrong: “You get ready too, Edward Elric.” “Did you bring your handkerchief?”
Ed: “I told you don’t treat me like a kid!” sigh “Now I can look forward to a whole train ride with this bozo.”
--------------------------
sfx: rap rap
--------------------------
Ed: “Lieutenant Colonel Hughes!”
Hughes: “Hey.”
--------------------------
Ed: “What is it?”
Hughes: ”The guys at Headquarters say they’re too busy to come, so I came here instead to see you off.”
--------------------------
Hughes: “Oh, I have a message from Roy.”
Ed: “From the Colonel?”
--------------------------
Hughes: “‘I won’t allow you to die in my jurisdiction because it’d be a pain to clean up the mess.’ That’s what he said.”
Ed: “Fine. Tell him, ‘Understood. I’d never die before you, Colonel, you @#*$ idiot.’”
--------------------------
Hughes: “Ha ha ha! They say that the ruder your are, the luckier you are!” “In that case, you and Roy are gonna live forever!”

Page 9:
sfx: fooo phweeeee
--------------------------
Hughes: “All right then, have a safe trip!”
sfx: snap phweeeeeee
--------------------------
Hughes: “Let me know if you’re ever in Central.”
Ed: “Sorry, gotta use my left hand.”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “So this person you know is an automail mechanic? I’ve never met anyone in that line of work.”
Ed: “Well, to be more precise, they’re a surgeon, a weaponsmith specializing in prosthesis and an automail expert. They’ll give me a good deal because I’ve known them for a long time. They do good work.”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “And what kind of place is this Resembool?”
Ed: “Just a quaint little town. There’s nothing for miles.”

Page 10:
Ed: “Actually, everything got destroyed because of the Civil War in the East.” “It might have been a bustling city if the military had been more on top of things.”
sfx: klata klata klata
--------------------------
Armstrong: “You’re making my ears hurt.”
Ed: “That’s good. Should I say more?”
--------------------------
Ed: “...It’s really a quiet place.” “It’s in the middle of nowhere, but it has a lot of things you can’t get in the city.”
sfx: klata klata
--------------------------
Ed: “That’s me and Al’s hometown, Resembool.”

Page 11:
Ed: “By the way, you did put Al on this train, right?”
Armstrong: “Hmh hmh. Yes, I took care of everything.”
--------------------------
Sign: Livestock Car
sfx: klata klata klata klata baaah baah baaah
Al: “...”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “I thought he might get lonely by himself.”
Ed: “You jerk! That’s worse than the luggage car!”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Hmh. Really what’s the problem?. He’s got plenty of room, it’s cheap, there’s lots of living things...wooly friends.”
Ed: “Quite messing with my brother!
sfx: aargg raaa raaar

Page 12:
sfx: foom
--------------------------
Ed: yawn
--------------------------
Ed: “z”
--------------------------
sfx:shff
Ed: “Wagh?!”

Page 13:
Armstrong: “Dr. Marcoh!!”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Aren’t you Dr. Marcoh!?”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “It’s Alex Louis Armstrong from Central!”
--------------------------
sfx: wsh
Armstrong: “Uh...”
--------------------------
Ed: “Someone you know?”
Armstrong: “Yes.”

Page 14:
Armstorng: “He’s a skilled alchemist who was involved in the alchemy research department at Central...” “He was studying the use of alchemy for medical purposes, but he vanished during the Civil War.”
--------------------------
Ed: “Let’s get off!”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Hmm? Don’t we get off at Resembool?”
Ed: “If he used to do that kind of research, then he might know something about biological transmutation, too.”
--------------------------
Ed: “We have to get Al and the baggage off, too! Come on!”
Armstrong: “Excuse me. We’re getting off here!”
--------------------------
Ed: “Woah! Al, you smell like sheep!”
Al: “It’s not my fault that I smell!”
sfx: gloom

Page 15
Lust: “Dr. Marcoh.” “Well, well...”
--------------------------
Ed: “Uh, excuse me, we’re looking for someone who just passed by...”
--------------------------
Armstrong: ahem “Have you seen an elderly man who looks like this?”
--------------------------
Ed: “You’re a good artist, Major.”
Armstrong: “It’s the skill of portraiture that’s been passed down for generations in the Armstrong family!”
--------------------------
Citizen 1: “Oh, that’s Dr. Mauro!”
Citizen 2: “Sure, we know him!”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Mauro?”
Citizen 3: “As you can see, this isn’t the richest town in the world. Most people here can’t afford doctors, but Dr. Mauro treats people for free.”
--------------------------
Citizen 4: “He’s a good man!”
Citizen 5: Yup. “He treats patients that most doctors would say don’t have a chance to survive!”

Page 16:
Citizen 6: Ga ha ha “‘s true! When I got my leg stuck in the weed puller and almost died, he fixed it good as new!”
--------------------------
Citizen 7: “When he treats you...it’s like there’s a flash of light and then you’re healed!”
--------------------------
Ed: “A flash of light...”
Armstrong: “Yes, it must be alchemy.”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “So, he’s been using an alias and hiding out in the countryside.”
Ed: “But why? What’s he hiding from?”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Apparently, when the Doctor disappeared, some of the top-secret research material disappeared, too.” “It was rumored that he stole it and ran.”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Perhaps, he thought we were sent here to being him back.”

Page 17:
sfx: kree
Ed: “Hello there! Anybody home?”
--------------------------
Ed: “WHOA!!”
sfx: BLAM
--------------------------
Marcoh: “What did you come for?”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “Please calm down Doctor.”
Marcoh: “Did you come to bring me back!?”

Page 18:
Marcoh: “I’ll never go back to that place!” “I beg you, let me go!”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “No, that’s not it. Please listen.”
Marcoh: “So you came to kill me and shut me up for good!?”
Armstrong: “First, it you could please lower your gun.”
Marcoh: “You can’t fool me!!”
--------------------------
Armstrong: I said, please calm down.
Ed: Al!
sfx: smush
--------------------------
Marcoh: “I couldn’t stand it anymore.”

Page 19:
Marcoh: “Having to obey their orders, dirtying my hands having to do the research I did,” “and then seeing it used in the Civil War to slaughter hundreds of thousands of people.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “It was an awful war. So many innocent people died.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “I couldn’t make up for my actions if I paid for them for the rest of my life.” “But, still, I try to do what I can. That’s why I work as a doctor in this place.”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “What were you researching before you left? What did you take with you?”

Page 20:
Marcoh: “I was making the Philosopher’s Stone.”
--------------------------
Maroch: “I took the Stone and the research data.”
--------------------------
Ed: “You have the Stone!?
Marcoh: “Yeah.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Here it is.”
--------------------------
sfx: glup

Page 21:
Ed: “‘Stone?’ It looks like liquid.”
(in bubble)sfx: pop
--------------------------
Ed: “Huh!!?
sfx: drip
--------------------------
Ed: “...huh?”
--------------------------
sfx: wobble
--------------------------
Marcoh: “The Sage’s Stone, the Stone of Heaven, the Great Elixir, the Red Tincture, the Fifth Element.” “Just as there are many names for the Philosopher’s Stone, it seem that it might not be a stone at all.”
Ed: “Wow”
sfx: tap tap

Page 22:
Marcoh: “But this was just something that was created for experimental purposes. It’s an imperfect compound, and it’s impossible to know when it will reach it’s limit and cease to work.” “But even so, compounds like these were used secretly throughout the Civil War, and they were tremendously successful.”
--------------------------
Ed: An imperfect compound... So that’s what Cornello had.”
--------------------------
Ed: “It may be imperfect, but the fact that you made it means that it must be possible to make a perfect Stone someday, right?”
--------------------------
Ed: “Dr. Marcoh, can you please show me your data?”
Marcoh: “What!?”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “What do you mean to do with such a thing? Major Armstrong, who is this child?
Armstrong: “He’s a State Alchemist.”

Page 23:
Marcoh: “This boy?” “He has a state license at his age? He must have been lured by the promises of privilege and research money, how foolish.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Do you know how many alchemists threw away their licenses after the war? I wasn’t the only one who hated myself for being used as a weapon.” “But you still...”
--------------------------
Ed: “I know it was foolish. But I had to!
--------------------------
Ed: “I have to achieve my goal, even if it means sleeping on this bed of nails.”

Page 24:
Marcoh: “So, you committed the ultimate sin.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “I’m surprised that you were able to transmute a soul...” “If you have that kind of talent, you might be able to create a complete Philosopher’s Stone.”
--------------------------
Ed: “So then!”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “But I can’t allow you to see my data!”
--------------------------
Ed: “But why not?”
Marcoh: “I’ve said everything I’m going to say. Getting your original body back, the Stone shouldn’t be used for something so trite.”
--------------------------
Ed: “Trite?!
Amrstrong: “Doctor, isn’t that a little harsh?”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “No one will ever see my research.” “It’s the work of the Devil.”

Page 25:
Marcoh: “And it can only lead straight to Hell.”
--------------------------
Ed: “I’ve already seen hell!”

Page 26:
Marcoh: “...No.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Please go.”
--------------------------
Ed: I’ve already seen hell!

Page 27:
Armstrong: “Are you satisfied with how that turned out?”
Ed: “Huh?”
--------------------------
Armstong: “You couldn’t look at the data, but you could have taken the Stone by force id you’d wanted to.”
Ed: “Yeah, wanted it so bad that I could taste it.”
--------------------------
Ed: “But when I thought about the people we met on the way to Dr. Marcoh’s house...”
--------------------------
Ed: “...I decided that if I stole the thing he used to heal them, just to get my old body back” “it would leave a bad taste in my mouth.”
--------------------------
Ed: “I’ll just think of a different way to get my body back. Right?”
Al: “Uh-huh.”

Page 28:
Ed: “So, are you satisfied, Major?” Don’t you have to report Dr. Marcoh to Central?”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “The person I met was an ordinary town Doctor named Mauro.”
sfx: hmph
--------------------------
Ed: “Oh man, we’re back to where we started.” “The road sure is long.”

Page 29:
Marcoh: “Hey you!”
--------------------------
Ed: “Dr. Marcoh?”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “This is the place where I hid my data. I wrote down the location.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “If you can look the truth in the face, then do it.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Then you might be able to reach the truth the lies within the truth.”

Page 30:
Marcoh: “Never mind.” “I’ve said too much.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “I’ll pray for the day that you two can return to your original bodies.”
--------------------------
sfx: bow

Page 31:
sfx: sigh
(in bubble) clak
--------------------------
Lust: “It’s been a while, Marcoh.”

Page 32:
Lust: “I was tailing the Fullmetal Boy, and you just dropped into my lap.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: !!
sfx: bamm
--------------------------
Lust: “Don’t worry, I’m not here to take you back.” “Even if you’re out of the picture, your subordinates are taking care of things quite well.”
Marcoh: “Wha...?”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Are you...are you still making those horrible things?”
Lust: “Oh please, don’t forget that we were the ones who taught you how to make Philosopher’s Stones.”

Page 33:
Lust: “Your leaving and taking the data with you didn’t slow down our research at all.”
--------------------------
Lust: “But the data you took!” “If an ordinary person sees it, it’s no big deal. But if an alchemist of that boy’s level sees it, it could cause a lot of trouble.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “You started to have suspicion too, didn’t you? That’s why you left the lab, isn’t that so?”
sfx: unh...
--------------------------
Marcoh: “So, I was right.” “I wanted to believe that I had make a mistake and that it was all a terrible dream...”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “You Devil...!!”

Page 34:
sfx: SPURT
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Aaaggghh!”
Lust: “Don’t get any funny ideas.”
--------------------------
Lust: “The data you stole,” “you told him where it is, didn’t you?”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “I don’t know what you’re...”
--------------------------
Lust: “Don’t lie to me.”
sfx: twist
Marcoh: “Guaggh!”

Page 35:
Lust: “I’ve got a lot of things to do, Marcoh.” “I don’t have time for chit-chat.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Heh.” “That boy is smart.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “When he sees the data, he’ll eventually figure out the truth.” “He’ll realize what you and the others are trying to do.
--------------------------
Lust: “I’ll never allow that to happen.”

Page 36:
Marcoh: “Oh, you wont?”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “You don’t have a choice!
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Because I’ve got you!
sfx:sksh
--------------------------
Marcoh: “You’re going to die here!

Page 37:
sfx: DOM
--------------------------
sfx: glush
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Ha ha... you didn’t... expect... that.”

Page 38:
Lust: “How mean of you.” “Now you’ve made me die once.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “...!!”
--------------------------
sfx: shk
--------------------------
sfx: snik
Lust: “I’d forgotten...”
sfx: katump

Page 39:
Lust: “That you’re another alchemist to use as a human sacrifice.”
sfx: zzt zzt
--------------------------
Marcoh: “No...” “This is impossible.”
--------------------------
Lust: “Well, now.” “What should I do with you?”
--------------------------
Kiri: “Doctor Marcoh!”
--------------------------
Kiri: “I brought some flowers!”
sfx: tmp
--------------------------
Marcoh: “!!” “Kiri! Stay back!!

Page 40:
sfx: CHUK SHIK
--------------------------
sfx: twannng
--------------------------
Lust: “Aren’t you a good little girl.”
Marcoh: “Kiri!!”
--------------------------
Lust: “Marcoh, if I twist my hand, even slightly,” “you know what will happen, don’t you?”

Page 41:
Marcoh: “Stop! That child is innocent!!
Lust: “Those aren’t the words I want to hear.”
--------------------------
Lust: “Tell me.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Th-the data is hidden in...”
--------------------------
Lust: “Yes, where?”

Page 42:
Ed: “National Central Library, First Branch.” “Tim Marcoh.”
--------------------------
Armstrong: “I see, ‘If you want to hide a tree, place it in a forest.’” “Their book collection is beyond compare. There must be millions of volumes.”
--------------------------
Ed: “That’s where I’ll find the clues about the Stone.”
sfx: grip
--------------------------
Al: “Good job, Big Brother! We’re on our way!”
--------------------------
Ed: “Yeah!”

Page 43:
Lust: “How clever of you to hide it in the library. I thought you had taken it and ran.”
--------------------------
Marcoh: “Who the hell are you people?” “What do you mean, ‘human sacrifice?’”
--------------------------
Lust: “Don’t worry, you’ll know soon enough.” “Until then Marcoh, I’ll let you live.”
--------------------------
Lust: “But don’t even think about running anywhere else, or getting in our way again.” “If you get any funny ideas...”
--------------------------
Lust: “I’ll erase this town from the map.

Page 44:
Lust: “Well then,” “too bad for the Fullmetal Boy.”
--------------------------
Lust: “I guess I’ll get there first and dispose of the data.”
