Tombow
Welcome, everyone, to the week-1 of FMA manga Re-read it from beginning!" sessions!! happy.gif

Please post your discussions for "Re-reading FMA: Session for chapter 1 here

For the reading reference for this session, please send a PM to A Pierrot's Aria and ask for "Reading Reference Assistance for week 1."
(For more detailed explanation on this, please read my post here.)

Huge "thank you" goes to animegirl95 for "reference assistance" for this session, and Broken ChouChou for the transcripts, and also thank you, A Pierrot's Aria for all your help!! ^^

This thread is geared for those who have read the whole FMA manga, including the final chapter (chapter 108) and may potentially contain spoilers from any of chapters 1- 108. Those who do not wish to see such spoilers, please do not go any further!

For those participants who are reading FMA manga FIRST TIME, hope to see your posts on our "regular" (i.e. non-re-reading) chapter 1 discussion thread (thread will be posted shortly ^^) smile.gif

For those who are re-reading this chapter, you are also welcome to join discussions on REGULAR (i.e. non-re-reading) chapter 1 discussion thread, AS LONG AS you do not post any spoiler content for chapters 2 - 108 chapters. Posting or mentioning of such spoiler contents, or even HINT of what to come in later chapters (such as "If you like seeing this, wait till how Ed will fight in chapter xx!" etc. etc) on REGULAR (i.e. non-re-reading) chapter 1 discussion thread is NOT ALLOWED, and any such content will be taken out by our moderators. However... (please read on)

For those who are re-reading this chapter, and find some info or revelations related to some chapters that are LATER than this chapter, and would like to discuss in more details about that future chapter content in that later chapter discussion thread, you are very welcome to go to the "regular" chapter discussion thread of that later chapter, and mention the information/revelation in chapter 1 and continue on with more extensive discussions about that future chapter content on that chapter discussion thread.

.....For example, say (some hypothetical situation ^^)...if you see some things you see in this chapter and you finally understand some stuff that was in chapter 67, and would like to add your newly discovered extensive analysis of something in that chapter, you are very welcome to go to "regular" chapter 67 discussion thread and add your post there with your newly discovered extensive analysis, and you can mention the connection to the content in chapter 1 there as well... smile.gif

(But, please keep in your mind that even in such case, of course you can not post spoilers from yet further later chapters on that chapter discussion thread...for example in this case, posting spoiler content from chapters 68-108 on regular chapter 67 content discussion thread is NOT allowed. smile.gif )

This thread is declared as "Spoiler Party" thread for all of FMA manga chapters up to chapter 107. You can mention any contents in FMA manga chapters 1- 107 without the use of spoiler tags on this thread. In addition, participants can mention the content of chapter 108 on this thread However, please note that even in Japan some FMA fans still haven't had a chance to read FMA manga's final chapter (chapter 108) due to last month's YoungGanGan mag with FMA manga chapter 108 all sold out (and in a very short time) and waiting for the reprint of the FMA manga final chapter in next month's YoungGanGan magazine. Therefore, until we lift such Spoiler tag condition for chapter 108 content, we ask you that if you post any content from chapter 108 (or even posting any HINT for chapter 108 content) on this thread, in addition to using SPOILER tags, please give warning SPECIFICALLY stating that the the content under the spoiler cover is some spoiler content from FMA manga's final chapter. smile.gif

Some notable information for this chapter will be listed on the post below, and also, for the English transcripts for chapter 1 from Viz' volume 1 FMA manga (courtesy of Broken ChouChou) please scroll down on this page.

Thank you, and now please proceed to the actual discussions that start on page 2 of this thread. ^^

Bald man: "That's when she was saved by Father Cornello! He taught her about the
Sun God Leto!"
Bearded man: "Preach on! He raises the dead, and the souls of his faithful live forever." "Cornello's miracles prove it."
--------------------------
Man: "You should see them yourself! It's definitely the power of
god!"
--------------------------
Ed: "'Raise the dead,' huh…" " I don't like the sound of that…"

Rosé: "No, I'm just doing my duty."
--------------------------
Rosé: "Um… by the way, Father…" "When will you be able to…?"

Cornello: "Yes, I know what it is you ask." "God has seen your good deeds."

Rosé: "Then…"

Page 14:
Cornello: "But it's not yet TIME, Rosé." "You understand, don't you?"

Cornello: "That's a good girl, Rosé."

Rosé: "Oh, it's you two again!"
--------------------------
Rosé: "Are you going to join the church of Leto?"
Ed: "Naw… Sorry, but I'm not religious."
--------------------------
Rosé: "That's not a real answer! If you believe in God, you can live with hope and
gratitude every day. It's wonderful!"
--------------------------
Rosé: "If you have faith, you'll grow taller for sure!" "Miracles do happen!"
Ed: "What was that…?"
Al: "Easy, easy." "She's not saying it to be mean."
--------------------------
Ed: "Sheesh… how can you honestly believe these things?"
--------------------------
Ed: "Do you really believe that if you pray to god the dead will come back to life?"

Page 16:
Rosé: "Yes." "I do…!"
--------------------------
Ed: "Water: 35 liters. Carbon: 20 kg. Ammonia: 4 liters. Lime: 15 kg." "Phosphorus:
800g. Salt: 250 g. Saltpeter: 100 g. Sulfur: 80 g. Flourine: 7.5 g. Iron: 5 g. Silicon: 3
g. And 15 other elements in small quantities."
Rosé: "…Huh?"
--------------------------
Ed: "That's the total chemical makeup of the average adult body." "Modern science
knows this much, but there has never been a single example of successful human transmutation."
--------------------------
Ed: "It's like there's some MISSING INGREDIENT." "Scientists have been trying to find
it for hundreds of years, pouring tons of money into research, and to this day they don't have a theory."
--------------------------
Ed: "They say science is a lost cause, but I think it's better than sitting around praying and waiting for something to happen."

Page 17:
Ed: "For that matter, the elements found in a human being…" "…Is all junk you can
buy in any market with a child's allowance."
Rosé: "!"
Ed: "Human's are pretty cheaply made."
--------------------------
Rosé: "Humans aren't OBJECTS!" That's an insult to the creator! God will punish you
for saying things like that!!"
Ed: "*AHA HA HA!"
--------------------------
Ed: "Alchemists are scientists. We don't believe in unprovable concepts like "god"."
Rosé: "Hmph"
-------------------------
Ed: "We strive to uncover the principles of creation in the matter of this world, to
pursue truth…"
--------------------------
Ed: "It's ironic that we scientists… who don't believe in god… are in a sense closest
to him."

Page 18:
Rosé: "What pride…" "Are you saying you are God's equal?"
--------------------------
Ed: "Well, it's like that myth about the hero…"
--------------------------
Ed: "He made wings out of wax so he could fly… but when he got too close to the
sun… to god… the wax melted and he crashed to the ground…"
--------------------------
Rosé: "?"

Page 19:
Crowd/SFX: HURRAH
--------------------------
Crowd: "*YOUR HOLINESS!", "Give us a miracle!", "Your holiness!"
--------------------------
SFX: BOOM
--------------------------
SFX: FSSSSH

Page 20:
Crowd/SFX: YAAY
ED: "…What do you think?"
--------------------------
Al: "That kind of transmutation has to be alchemy."
Ed: "That's what I thought too."
--------------------------
Ed (?): "But what about the laws…?"
--------------------------
Rosé: "So, you came to see him after all!" "See, he does have miraculous powers.
Father Cornello is the Sun God's child!"
--------------------------
Ed: "Naw, that's alchemy no matter how you look at it." "Cornello's a fraud."
Rosé: "GRRR"
--------------------------
Al: "But he can bypass the laws for some reason."
Ed: "Yeah, that's the problem right there."
Rosé: "The laws?"

Page 21:
Al: "Most people think that alchemy can do anything and create whatever you
want…" "But in reality there are certain concrete laws."
--------------------------
Al (?): "I guess the two big concepts are "THE LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS"
and "THE LAW OF NATURAL PROVIDENCE". "Although some alchemists conjure with the four elements, or with the three principles…"
--------------------------
Rosé: "?" "?" "?"
SFX: DUHH DUHH
Al: "Um… Let me try…" "A substance can only be created from the same type of
substance. For example, if something's mostly water, you can only use it to make other things with the attributes of water."
--------------------------
Ed: "In other words, the basics of alchemy is the "Equivalent Exchange"!" "That
means to obtain something, something of equal value must be lost."
--------------------------
Ed: "But that guy is making too much out of too little… alchemy-wise, that's breaking the law."
Rosé: "SEE? So why don't you two just have faith that it's a miracle already?!"
--------------------------
Al: "Big brother… do you think…?"
Ed: "Yeah, I do."

Page 22:
Ed: "*I THINK WE'VE FOUND IT"
--------------------------
Ed: "Hey, lady, I'm starting to get interested in this religion!" "I'd LOVE to speak to
his holiness, do you think you could take me to him?"
SFX: SPIN
Rosé: "Oh my! So you're finally starting to believe!"
--------------------------
SFX: GONG, GONG
--------------------------
Cray: "Your holiness, there are people here requesting an audience with you."

Page 23:
Cray: "It's a boy and a man in a suit of armor. They say they're the Elric brothers…"
Cornello: "What?" "I'm busy, send them away."
--------------------------
Cornello: "!" "Wait, hold on. The Elric brothers?" "Edward Elric!?"
--------------------------
Cray: "Yes, it was the boy who called himself that…do you know him?"
Cornello: "Aaggh…! This is bad!"
--------------------------
Cornello: "It's Edward Elric… the FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST!"
Cray: "!!"
--------------------------
Cray: "Wha…?" "But he's only a little brat, only this high!" You're joking, right!?"
Cornello: "Fool! Alchemical skill had nothing to do with age!"
--------------------------
Cornello: "I had heard that he obtained the tile of State Alchemist at age 12…" "So…
the rumors about this brat were really true…"

Page 24:
Cray: What is a State Alchemist doing here!?" "Could it be that our plan…"
Cornello: "It seems the dogs of the military have good noses."
--------------------------
Cray: "Shall we chase them away?"
Cornello: "No, that would cause more suspicion." "And even if we did chase them
away, they'd come back… and bring more."
--------------------------
Cornello: "Let's just say… THEY NEVER CAME HERE." "How does that sound?"
--------------------------
Cray: "!!"
--------------------------
Cray: "It shall be as God wills…"
SFX: SMIRK
Cray: "Please come this way."

Page 25:
Cray: "His holiness is very busy, so it's not easy to get an audience with him. You two are very lucky."

Cray: "Rosé, these are heathens that were planning to entrap his holiness. They're
evil."
--------------------------
Rosé: "What!? But his holiness would never let you do this… let you…"
--------------------------
Cray: "He DID allow it!"
--------------------------
Cray: "The words of his holiness are the words of God." "THIS IS THE WILL OF GOD!"

Al: It's just what it looks like."

Page 31:
Rosé: "Th…" "There's nothing inside…" "It's empty…!?"

Al: "You might say…" "… That this is what happens when you commit the greatest
sin… when you trespass in God's domain."
--------------------------
Al: "My big brother and I both…"
--------------------------
Rosé: "You two… Edward?"
--------------------------
Ed: "Well, let's just save that story for another time…"
SFX: Scratch, Scratch
--------------------------
Ed: "… Anyway, I guess YOUR God showed his true colors."
--------------------------
Rosé: "No! It has to be some kind of mistake!!"
Ed: "Aww, man… she's seen all this and she still believes in "his phoniness"?

Page 32:
Ed: "Rosé…" "… Do you have the courage o face the truth?"
--------------------------
Al (I think, grah, make it clear who's speaking dammit!): "Is this Cornello's room? The
one Rosé talked about?"

Cornello: "Did you come to hear me preach? Hmm?"
--------------------------
Ed: "Yeah, by all means teach us…"

Page 34:
Ed: "… Like about how you use your lame alchemy to deceive your followers!"
--------------------------
Cornello: "Well… I'm not sure what you mean." "Please don't confuse my miracles
with alchemy." "If you saw for yourself you'd believe…"
--------------------------
Ed: "Yeah, I've seen it all right…" "And what I couldn't understand was how you're
able to do a transmutation that goes against the laws."
--------------------------
Cornello: "That's why I'm telling you it's NOT alchemy…"
Ed: "And then it came to me."
--------------------------
Ed: (bold) "The Philosopher's Stone." "THAT'S how you do it, right?"
--------------------------
SFX: WIK
--------------------------
Ed: "Like maybe… just maybe… It's that RING?"

Page 35:
SFX: TWIK
--------------------------
Cornello: "Heh… the government gets their money's worth out of you, don't they?" "I
guess you saw through the whole thing."
--------------------------
Cornello: (bold) "Correct!" "The Philosopher's Stone, the legendary catalyst, the
amplifier of all alchemical processes." "With this, I can conjure at the minimum price,
for the maximum result!"
--------------------------
Ed: "How long I've searched for that…"

Page 36:
Cornello: "Hmph! What's the jealous look in your eyes!?" "What do YOU want the
stone for? Money? Honour?"
--------------------------
Ed: "What about you? What do you get out of founding this phony religion?" "If it's money you want you can make as much as you want with the stone."
Cornello: "No, it's not about the money." "Well, I do want money, but I can get that with almost no effort… in the form of donations from my flock."
--------------------------
Cornello: "What I really need are followers who will happily give their lives for me."
--------------------------
Cornello: "Think about it! An invincible army of fanatics with no fear of death!"
--------------------------
Cornello: "Soon I'll have more than enough people!" "Just watch! Within a few years
time this entire nation will be mine!" "**HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!"

Page 37:
Ed: "Well, fine, but I don't really care about that…"
Gesticulation: LET'S MOVE ON…
Cornello (bold): "What!!?"
--------------------------
Cornello: (bold) "Don't belittle my ambition by saying you "don't care"!" "YOU'D BETTER CARE! You're a member of the military, after all!!
Ed: "You know, to be honest, I could care less about my country OR the military."
--------------------------
Ed: "I'll be blunt! Give me the Philosopher's Stone!" "If you do that, I'll stay quite about the scam you've been pulling on everybody."
--------------------------
Cornello: "Hmph! You'd try to bargain with ME…?" "My followers would never believe the words of an outsider like you!"
--------------------------
Cornello: "The people of this town LOVE me! They think that my words are the words of GOD!" "No matter how much noise you make, no matter what evidence you have, they'll never believe you!"
--------------------------
Cornello (bold): "*Those idiots will believe anything I tell them! I've completely fooled them!"
SFX: WAHAHAHAHA

Page 38:
Ed: "WOW… you ARE smart!"
SFX: CLAP, CLAP, CLAP
Ed: "Thanks for telling me how you do it."

Cornello: "R-Rosé!?" "What is the meaning of this…?"

For thoughts on this chapter I find something a little "funny" about this chapter. Now when I first bought this I found it to be very "simple" looking, the background is simple and the characters are simple looking as well, even Al's armor can be seen as simple. What I'm getting at is that this shows Arakawa's development of chapters over time. aside from the first two pages (Ed realizing Al is gone and the two page spread of the two brothers) this was a simple looking manga. However even over the course of this one chapter the style seems to change, things get more elaborate up to the very last page. I also see the style fitting the mood, when we see Ed with his leg missing it is a darkly colored page, the dark tones warn us of what is to come. Now look at what comes after, a happy looking town, bright (even though it is in black and white), and happy looking not at all like the previous pages. This seems to show that this isn't going to be fun or serious but a balance of both. Also the main thing is the big "revel" at the end (can't really call it that since Al said Ed was the Fullmetal Alchemist and I had seen the first anime prior to reading this the first time) but this just feels like an appetizer, Ed's line at the end is pretty much telling you to buckle your seat belts, your in for the ride of your life. Almost like Arakawa is telling her readers that this isn't going to be like anything else, it'll be a ride you'll never forget, and it will be awesome!
Tombow
^ Ah, yes, I was having the similar feeling, but animegirl95 expressed it nicely! biggrin.gif
Just like animegirl95 said, I was looking at this chapter, and thinking about Arakawa-sensei's own development as a serial manga artist.
And, animegirl95 above already described it eloquently, so I'm not going to repeat, but coming back to the first chapter, and reading it again makes me rather happy, like, "aha, this is how it all started.." kind of way... and knowing how her storytelling gets better and better as the chapter progresses. smile.gif Anyway, I will add more specifics later. ^^

My thoughts on Chapter 1:

Firstly, when Al uses alchemy to fix the radio, why doesn't he have to put his hands on the circle?

Al tells Rose about the Law of Conservation of Mass and the Law of Natural Providence. While the former is referred to often during the series, I think this is the only time we hear about the latter. I looked up the Law of Natural Providence and apparently it states that one cannot change the atomic properties of the matter they are changing. So is it relevant in this series?

A tiny thing, but on page 4 (I think?), where Cornello first begins his sermon, we see a sign off to the left with the words “Stray Dog” on it. Does this refer to Arakawa’s oneshot?

On page 3 (?) is a transmutation circle on Al's left. It doesn't seem to be the human transmutation circle, so it's just for visual appeal, I guess, but I've learned that many of Arakawa's circles actually have meanings (as in the symbols on them actually represent something), so is there somebody who can figure this one's out?

So yeah, that's all I can think of for the moment. :3

You're right! I always noticed Al's hands never being on the circle but just dismissed it but now it does bug me a bit. I'd file it under Arakawa just starting and she probably didn't have the full "need to touch the circle" out yet. However it's a long shot.

Outer circle is familiar but that's all I can recall anything at the moment. Hopefully someone can pitch in with his/her input. smile.gif

Aha, I see that on page 21, far right panel.... And, yes, this seems to be the only time mentioned of this in the series.
Causmicfire
The outer circle seems to have the zodiac symbols in it. The others are planet symbols? I definitely see either Mercury or Venus, Earth, and the moon on the inner circle that spirals out from the sun. Maybe the circle represents life's journey? Now that I really look at it, I can't help but be reminded of the discussion of the doors of truth and Kabbalah. Which seems to go with the theory that it's a circle depicting life's journey much like the doors seem to depict growth.

Hmm, it's quite fun that the story begins with a small baddie being an "emissary" of the sun god and that the Promised Day takes place during an eclipse where the big baddie is trying to become a perfect being/god (and the fact that this particular arc furthers Father's plan).

Hmm, and an invincible army with no fear of death sounds familiar...

I've just realized what the lion/serpent chimera Ed fights always reminded me of...the Amestris flag.

Will post more when I get back home, but to perform alchemy you don't necessarily need to actually touch the circle (at least, in some cases). There's likely a degree of willpower that's used when activating a transmutation circle. I remember this being fairly consistent throughout the series, but this reread will confirm or deny that.
A Pierrot's Aria
This is actually really exciting; I'm actually finding myself looking forward to each weekend for a new chapter. wink.gif I know I could just sit down and read it all now but waiting is making it more fun. xD

I love that how from the beginning of the first chapter, even though I know what happens, it still has a sense of mystery from the first page. Especially starting with the lines "Teachings that do not speak of pain have no meaning...because humankind can not gain anything without giving something in return".

I also really love how Al's state is revealed; he's shot through his eye and everyone thinks he's surely dead, then the next minute he's up and talking. Haha!

I also think it's great how she makes Ed and Al so...detached...with lack of a better word. At first they just come across as two vagrants who are looking for something; but as the series goes on the reader becomes more attached to these amazing characters, learning more of their goals and values- I think that's amazing. That brings me onto one of the many reasons why I love FMA- Arakawa doesn't seem to dwell on making her characters all nicey-nicey and goody-two shoes who everyone has to love and agree with; she actually gives them character which makes them more believable and human.
Nacchan
God, the first chapter makes me so melancholic! I love the happy-craziness on it, the first time Ed freaks out 'cause someone called him little XD

The first quote is so... I don't have words. It remuses all the story, and it's so suggestive ;_; It makes you say "I want to know more NOW."
Kasumisty
Time for my thoughts. I will be using Polish edition of FMA as a reference, hope that's ok. I'm posting while reading it, so they may be a bit laconic or chaotic:

-Firstly, I love the very first quote. It encourages one to read more. (and I just love Arakawa for ending the manga with bringing this quote back.)
-If I were reading the manga first, before watching the first anime, I would have hard time guessing this boy without leg is Ed. He was drawn in a way his main traits (haircut, eye shape) were somewhat hidden.
-Ah, the artstyle was so simple. It was cute.
-Hey, Ed had two antennas at the beginning! Page 10 and 11...then one starting with page 12. It was also drawn differently, as a part of the bangs, instead of something separate.
-And yeah, I guess at this point Arakawa still hasn't decided how the transmutation circle should be activated - this was the first and last time the gesture Al made was shown - or was she not sure if she wants to give him clap alchemy yet? It looked like something between two techniques.
-Ahh, the first midget joke. Delightful.
-Just occured to me - Rose is actually one of the few weak female characters. Glad she evolves later, she was very annoying.
-I'm also glad that Ed evolves from a stubborn ignorant to a thoughtful teenager.
-Elrics' attitiudes are kinda repulsive. And they're being rather distant.
-They never brought the discussion about the second law again. I guess Arakawa resigned from that.
-Arakawa stated that FMA does not contain any actual religion, but actually there are a lot references and talks about it. Mostly about God.
-I have a feeling Edward was even more cocky in the first chapter.
-Wee, our midget is a half.

Ahh, I find it hard to do already knowing the content of the all chapters. All my thoughts for now.

I know this is a bit of an odd idea...but what about a kitty-counter? I noticed during my other readings of this manga that Arakawa likes to throw in cats into her background and of course, Al's armor. (Not counting the Chimera characters, because they appear in multiple panels.) It could be that for each one found, a picture is posted of it, entitled with it's page number(Viz Media pg #), and panel number of that page.

Examples from this week's Chapter:

The circled section on the left may be difficult to see, but it is the back of the cat that is shown resting near the potted Cactus, as seen below:

Michiyo-
So, let’s see the first chapter. It’s strange to re-read it now that I know how it ended. But it’s fun to look back to how the story developed in those 9 years. And now we can look for small hints which foreshadowed the future! biggrin.gif
When I first read this chapter I already started watching the first series, but I was curious how things happened in the manga. (And when I realized that the story is different and much better from FMA1, I immediately became a huge fan of the manga! biggrin.gif)

So, Arakawa gave a dramatic start, showing Ed after the transmutation. I liked that the actual story of their human transmutation wasn’t revealed in the first pages, it was just a small prologue. The chapter continued in Liore, so the readers were left with many questions.

Also, the most important quote in FMA was right in the first page. Now that I’m re-reading the chapter I love the fact (WARNING, chapter 108 spoilers in the spoiler tag!) that Arakawa used the exact quote at the end of the last chapter, and adding more thoughts to it, that if someone overcomes that pain, they can obtain a fullmetal heart. It gave a great frame of the whole story.
This beginning arc was interesting to read, because now we know that the Sun played an important part in the later chapters.

Arakawa’s drawing style was much simpler in the early chapters. As the story progressed, the style changed. But it shows the characters’ growth too. Ed changed a lot, in personality as well, and the simple art style reflects that he was still a kid in the first chapter, but he became a strong person at the end.
I also like when Arakawa draws the characters in chibi style. And the old joke when everyone mistakes Al for the Fullmetal Alchemist. laugh.gif Or when everyone freaks out when they learn that Al’s armor is empty. We got lots of these scenes at the beginning of the story.
Oh, and the Stray Dog cameos! We should count how many times it appeared in FMA! laugh.gif And let’s look for the Stalker Guy as well!

All in all, this chapter was a good start of an awesome story. The main characters, Ed and Al were introduced, and we also learn why the story is called the “Fullmetal Alchemist”. And the chapter ended with the same gesture and quote as in chapter 107. Arakawa doesn’t draw unnecessary panels, even the smallest things can turn out to be important. smile.gif

Btw, someone mentioned that Al didn’t touch the transmutation circle when he transmuted the radio. Well, I recently re-watched ep. 11, the Rush Valley arc, and he did the same gesture there. Check it in chapter 17, p. 33.

That's all now, chapter 2 comes tomorrow, or when I’ll have time to write down my thoughts. ^^
Tombow

Quotes can't seem to work for me right now so I'll just not use them. [/n00b]

@Tombow: Yup, that circle. :D And as to the Law of Natural Providence, maybe it's untrue? Seeing as Ed is changing atomic properties of matter in Chapter 3, when he transmutes coal (?) into gold.

@Causmicfire: Wow, I never realized the chimera was similar to the Amestrian flag!

@Kasumisty: I also thought Rose was being kind of annoyingly weak in the first chapter. At least later in the manga she redeems herself by actually doing something useful, unlike in the anime where she becomes some sort of priestess-or-other with a baby.
Edamame
Rereading a book after you already know the ending really does make you pick up on different things the second time around.

First off, I love how Arakawa sets the stage with a dark glimpse into the night that the brothers' transmutation with the fateful quote that will really set the tone for the entire manga. For those who aren't familiar with the story, I am sure that one sinister glimpse of the transmutation is enough to capture their attention and make them want to turn the next page. One would expect to discover the answer to what happened on the first page, but Arakawa chooses to whisk us away to Reole instead. As Michiyo stated, it really leaves a lot to the imagination of the reader and leaves them with many questions as to what just took place on the first page.

I am always fascinated by motifs of religion and science in novels, and it was rather entertaining to see how Arakawa handled them in this chapter. I like how the owner of the cantina thought that Al was performing a miracle when he transmuted the broken radio; as the story progresses we learn that alchemy is something beyond a mere science and can be viewed as almost spiritual in a sense. The figure of Father Cornello reminds of those slimy televangelists who hide behind the guise of religion while conning innocent people of their money. I actually felt bad for Rose who was so blinded by the desire to resurrect her dead boyfriend that she fell deeper and deeper into Cornello's trap. I actually have to say that I thought that Arakawa gave us a pretty cynical view of religion as a corrupter of the masses and I like how she used Ed, a boy who has committed one of the greatest sins, to point out the Cornello's fraud. While I felt bad for Rose, who had all of her hopes crushed, I don't think that the brothers would have let her continue believing that the dead could be brought back to life after attempting human transmutation themselves and now being walking testimonies of what happens when one tries to resurrect the dead.

Is it just me or did Ed seem really cocky and prideful in this chapter? You think that somebody who committed the greatest sin in alchemy, who transgressed into God’s territory, who lost two limbs and who now has a walking suite of armor for a brother would be just a little more humble. Nope, not in the slightest. Even Rose mentions Ed’s pride after he states that alchemists are in fact the closest people to God. I really like how Arakawa crafted Ed’s personality like that. He isn’t one of those stereotypical shounen characters who is so squeaky clean; he is terribly flawed, but we get to see him grow and mature as the story progresses. It makes his character just that much more believable and really goes to show just how much of a talented story-teller Arakawa is. I also really enjoyed how Arakawa snuck in the famous Greek myth of Icarus and Daedalus and how the story was made that more powerful as it was Ed who was the one telling it. I think that anybody who is familiar with that myth can really see how it hits homes for both Ed and Al.

I also like how Ed doesn’t have the highest morals in the world in this chapter. He desires Cornello’s “Philosopher’s Stone” so much, that he is willing to let Cornello continue scamming people if he hands him the stone. The again, it could have just been a way of getting Cornello to talk.
Yeah! The chapter ends with the infamous line that will also end the second-to-last chapter. Arakawa, you are such a genius. (Possible spoiler for those who haven't finished chapter 107)

Fun things I liked in this chapter:
-Sigh, memories. I missed Ed getting called a midget and blowing up at people.
-The towns-people mistaking Al for his older brother.
-Ed using Al’s head as a bowling ball.
-Ed’s infamous transmuted spear.

~How old are Ed and Al supposed to be in this chapter?

I'm sorry I'm late, but in Sweden weeks starts on mondays, so I feel like I have the whole sunday on me to write! xD

I started reading FMA becasue I was just getting interested in manga and Winry was very cute on the cover of volume 5. But I almost gave up while reading the radio-speach in the begining. I didn't understand what in God's name they were talking about! xD The humour kept me reading, though!

The alchemy-reactions seems VERY, eh...windy(?) here in the begining. Even though they're not blowing things up.
Al doesn't say much! He's, like, mysterious!

I think that was just a mistake. If it was Rosé then it should be pronounced Rozay, and if it was Réole then it would be pronounced Rayole.
Tombow
^ Yeah, Leore maybe right for the town's name. As for the case for Rose, I found that the raw is actually spelling more closer to Rosé (Rozay) than Rose (rōz) and I checked the raw for later chapter when Rose appears again, such as chapter 80, and there again, the Japanese katakana spelling used for her name is more closer to Rosé (Rozay) than Rose (rōz) which I did not realize till I read it again this time. ^^
Hence, for the spelling of the name of town, whatever the official English spelling for FMA manga is fine with me. ^^
And, for the case of Rose, I agree with the translator for Viz's volume book 1, Akira Watanabe, and I think it's more closer to Rosé than Rose according to the raw. smile.gif
