The FMA manga re-reading project officially kicked off on July 11, 2010. The chapter discussion threads will be opened every Sunday.
Each week we’ll be discussing 1 chapter per week.
Additionally, we may have some reading sessions for related "gaiden" also.

Some small changes regarding the Re-reading Project:

Starting from this Sunday for the following 4 weeks there’ll be only one chapter per week to discuss. Many members of the board are on vacation or simply don’t have time to participate in the project. By slowing down there’ll be time for them to re-read the chapters and catch up with the discussions.

So here’s the schedule for the following 4 weeks:
Session 6 (Aug. 15 – Aug. 21): Vol. 3 – Chapter 11 “The Two Guardians”
Session 7 (Aug. 22 – Aug. 28.): Vol. 3 - Chapter 12 “The Definition of Human”

Would each discussion be a spoiler party for all 108 chapters, or just the chapter being discussed at the time?

It's been a LONG time since I reread FMA. This sounds like fun :P

But ONE chapter per week? That's so slow! Couldn't it be one... per day? XD

Ok, I realize that wouldn't work, obviously. But how about designating 2 - 3 days or something like that for each chapter, to keep waiting to a minimum, but still give people time to discuss? Still too little? ^^

I like one per week, just because...well...I don't want this to eeend T_T I cannot let go! I cannot move on with my life! I will miss not only the best manga ever written, but all the awesome people on this forum who make it so fun to discuss it!

I think that this sounds like a wonderful idea! I have had to sorely neglect posting on this forum for a while now, due to graduate school hunting. Now that I am finally in graduate school (yes, I am going to be living in a box for eternity), I would really love to participate in the re-reading of FMA; I can not let go of a good thing too soon. I agree with everybody that one chapter per week sounds more than manageable. I have tried to read other manga to fill the dark void that FMA is going to leave, but nothing quite strikes the same way as FMA has done. It will certainly be fun to reread it again, and pick up on all the plot points and hidden clues that I missed before.

I think one per week is perfectly reasonable for those of us who have lives outside of manga (children/jobs/educational commitments). Just one a day, or even a couple of days, simply would not leave enough time for people to discuss thoroughly, which is what we are trying to encourage.

I for one look forward to it. Not only does it make our dear FMA last a little longer, like Tombow said we might also miss clues we never spotted the first time round. Arakawa is a clever writer and has sneaked things in before that have gone missed by many.

Yeah, I'm with the one per week thing. Granted, that means it would take us a bit over two years to get through the whole thing, but hey, it'll get us through the withdrawal. And I'll be done with high school by the time we're finished and going through my upperclassmen years in high school without FMA will not be fun ._.

I have official English translations from VIZ we could use for reference. I only have volumes 2-18, with the exception of 14 and 15 (ironically they were my two favorites that went missing two years ago) but I've gotta scrounge around the house for a bit to find some of them, since there was a time when I carried my favorite volumes with me everywhere.

That's a great idea! I've always wanted to re-read the series to make clear some chapters that I don't remember much at the moment and to spot the foreshadowings!It'd be more fun to discuss it here! ^^

I like the idea. Will participate, however I cannot gurantee I will be there to the end.

I can cover those volumes missing from sidekick's collection, should it be needed. Got vol. 1 - 22 so far. Will get 23 in August.

And yes, that was sort of my point, that it will take two years to finish this thing. That, and that a chapter takes 10 minutes to read and a week is 10. 080 minutes. But I guess that about withdrawal is a good point. As little pain in the process as possible would the preferred choice

Okay, perhaps you are right about how long it would take to read them all one by one.

As my own personal suggestion, to be discussed with Tombow and other mods later, what if we tried covering two chapters per week? The chapters are shorter to begin with so this may be feasible to start with, maybe changing to one per week as they become longer.

What do people think of that?

I thought about it too, that we can discuss 2 chapters per week, and maybe when we'll get to the final arc of the story (from Vol. 21, the chapters after the timeskip) we can do one chapter per week.

My other idea is that chapters which belong together, for example the Lior arc (chapter 1-2) , or the Rush Valley arc (chapters 17-19) can be discussed on the same week.

^I think its better we start when its finished, it just makes sense... it would be like a circle (I like circles); we finish the last chapter and then start with the first. Like an ouroborus tattoo.

I like the idea of grouped discussions, though it might not work near the end where it's just one long arc that moulds into itself blah blah... I suppose by then we could resort back to a 1/2 a week thingy.

I think the suggestion about 2 chapters a week for starters, then one a week as they become longer/deeper is a good idea. If we only did one a week we'd be here for 2 years and I can't say for definite if I'll last that long! I'd just end up impatient and reading them all consecutively over a very short time.

Count me in! I'd love to re-read the whole manga and discuss it entirely... that's something I wasn't able to do, since I came into the fandom when we were around chapter 80-something.

Oooh discussing the manga from the beginning sounds fun. Because even though I have been following FMA since like 2004, I didn't read the chapters online, I only bought the manga volumes.

I (seem to) remember a re-read project on LJ from ages ago (3 yr ago, maybe?) that is no longer active. Will anyone be offended if the LJ re-read project's info and data are used here, or is this re-read project going to be a pure, fresh project?

^I think I know which LJ community you're talking about. I really enjoyed reading through their thoughts on the chapters, even if I didn't participate in it.

As for a re-read of the whole manga, you can count me in. I didn't get into the manga until fairly late in the game (around the time of the Pride reveal) so I'd love to discuss some of the early chapters with the people here. Besides, with no more chapters coming out, I'm going to be suffering serious withdrawals, so having this to look forward to will help wean me off gradually.

Doing two chapters a week to start with sounds like a good idea, otherwise, as people have said, we'd be here for over two years.

One question: Will we be doing the gaidens too, or just sticking to the main chapters?

I think it is better to re-read from the start, as this is meant to be done AFTER everyone has read 108. For the old project, people didn't re-read the FMA story in its completion, so the previous re-read project and this new re-read project is totally different.

Sounds like a fun idea. I'm marathoning the entire series through 107 right now before getting to 108 (just started chapter 29) so a lot of the earlier chapters will still be fresh in my head by the time this project starts. I too got into the FMA fandom relatively late, first watching it maybe a little more than a year ago and only caught up with everyone on the manga come chapter 101.

I like the idea of two chapters per week. It will keep the discussion lively and give time for those of us with other commitments. I look forward to it especially since I didn't start here when chapter 1 when it first came out.

On-Topic: regarding "FMA manga re-reding from beginning" project.
I think 2 chapters per week is good time wise. However, I think there should be flexibility with the schedule to allow weeks with one chapter discussions so that we are not splitting up two episode arcs into two separate weeks.

^ @Dark_Fishie - Yeah, I was posting "moved-posts note" when my Net connection went down. The connection is still bad and I can't do copy-pasting of destination thread where the moved post went, etc. at the moment, so I'll finish that post later. Sorry about that. ^^

And, along with it I lost my almost-done-composing reply post for the project related discussions when my Net connection went down.
I will re-write it later when my Net connection improves.

When the re-reading will start?

I read the thread, and would like to thank you everyone for great inputs!!
I agree with others that it will be a good idea that we will basically proceed with 2 chapters per week, but also maintain the flexibility... that sounds reasonable to me also. ^^

As for the starting date, I agree with RoyxRizaFan's opinion above and considering that we'll have the final episode of FMA:Brotherhood (Japanese) on Sunday July 4 in Japan, followed by the official English subbed final episode of FMA:B being uploaded on Funimation website on Thursday, July 8, and hence I would like to suggest the starting date to be the week of July 11th. This will give us the first week of July (week of June 27) and week of July 4 to concentrate on the discussions for the final 2 episodes of FMA:Brotherhood anime series.

I will address Vlyse's question later and explain how we may proceed with the discussions.
Also, Broken Chouchou and a few others, please wait for my PM. ^^

"Read it from chapter 1" project will be open to all FMA fans, including those who have not read FMA manga yet and this is their first time reading it. However...

We'll have SEPARATE discussion threads for those who have already read later chapters, and for those who are reading it first time.

For those who are reading FMA manga first time, we'll bring up our regular Chapter discussion thread for that chapter. Yes, we'll dust up and bring up old chapter discussion threads XD (if any.. because in the early days in this forum we did not have discussion threads for every chapter. In those cases, we'll create a new chapter discussion thread for that chapter.)
For those who have read later chapters and participating in the re-reading of the chapter CAN post and join the regular chapter discussion thread for that chapter also, such as, "I love how Ed talks to Roy here..." etc., etc., but NO REVEALING of later chapter content such as "You see a couple in that train station? Wait till you get to chapter so and so..." or "Pay attention to what Ed says in page 27 because later on... " and so on. Making those type of SPOILING postings on regular chapter discussion threads will be absolutely prohibited. Period.

Besides that, each week, we'll open "Now I know! re-reading chapter xxx" (this thread title is tentative XD) discussion thread for each chapter we re-visit. Those who haven't read later chapters and willingly wish to be spoiled can read and join the discussions there also, but these threads are geared for those who have already read FMA at least once and hence, while we are discussing that week's chapter content on that thread it is all right to bring up related incidents etc. from the later chapter on that thread, as long as the main focus of the discussion is still the content of that chapter we are reading that week. The thread will be "Spoiler Party" as far as the use of Spoiler tags for the content for any chapters, meaning if you refer events from later chapters you don't have to use Spoiler tags, except for the content from chapter 108, the final chapter, and we ask you to use SPOILER TAGs if you bring up the content from chapter 108, at least for now.

We'll probably open separate such thread for each chapter we read, for example, if we read chapter 1 and chapter 2 in the first week, we will open "Now I know! re-reading chapter 1" discussion thread and "Now I know! re-reading chapter 2" discussion thread at the beginning of the project week. And everyone is free to post on these threads whole week, and later on also if anyone wishes. Eventually, tho, we might bunch/merge these discussion threads later... undecided on this yet. ^^

In addition, you CAN revisit the regular chapter discussion thread (as in, not "Now I know" threads) for later chapters and point out events in the earlier chapter that may be connected to the events in that later chapter, and if you wish, you can delve into further discussions on those later happening on those later chapter discussion thread as we "discover" new twist/hints/clues/additional info etc. in the earlier chapters.

EXAMPLE: let's say, if we are doing "Re-reading" for chapter 15, in addition to "Re-reading chapter 15" discussion thread, we can bring up what happened in chapter 15 such as, newly discovered "connection" to the later events, etc. on relevant regular chapter discussion threads for chapters 16 - 108, IF that event has any relevance to the content in that later chapter. But, you can NOT bring that event and post that on regular chapter discussion threads for chapters 1 - 14.
