You exaggerate MangaEnvy's position.

No, I don't.

You exaggerate AnimeEnvy's though. He had like 15 minutes of screentime in the entire series there.

Being "major" in a story has nothing to do with the character's position in the chain of power in the bad guys' group.

In the manga he's responsible for both starting the Ishval war and killing Hughes, which are easily two of the biggest causes of sorrow and suffering for the good guys. He's also the most prominent homunculus along with Wrath, having by far the most screentime and appearances. So yeah, he's a major antagonist. Period.

Also it's beyond moronic to fault him for losing against Ran Fan when it's obvious that if he had fought at full power he would've crushed her like he did Ed and Ling.

And the only reason he got 'OWNED' by Marcoh was because he was ordered not to kill him. He beat him 1 minute into the fight after catching him with his tongue and could have killed him right there and then.

I know why I should love the episode, but I really didn't. The production values were extremely high, but I have real problems with this portion of the story, which are well-known by now.

It's enough that the fight is extremely exaggerated and one-sided, but felt so unnecessary, too. It's just not very good writing, and I expected more from Arakawa at this point of the manga.

Anyway, my full review is up on my blog. Also found on the first post of this topic.

I can see where you're coming from, but Roy's flame alchemy isn't to be underestimated.
In the manga when Roy loses his sight they mention how his abilities were the most troublesome, out of all the alchemists present (including Hohenheim, Izumi...)!
His flames are very efficient in directly destroying the zombies, and the Homunculi... instead of just using basic alchemy to produce weapons to kill them over and over.

Envy also isn't the most battle-skilled Homunculi around. Pride did tell him his "skills were lacking".

And there's the cliche argument of Roy's power being 150% because of his Rage Mode tongue.gif (Which, obviously, is not a good argument, but... just throwing it out there)
So, I don't think it's necessarily exaggerated.

P.S. Reading your review, Envy closing his eyes wouldn't have stopped the flames... Roy can pinpoint, and they'd just burn his eyelids away as well, eh?

Anyways, don't look at my Roy-fan outer appearance, I was also surprised at how easily Roy was kicking Envy's arse. Wasn't very realistic.
It probably would have been better had Envy been able to pull off a trick or two on Roy during the battle.
Vlyse
Envy clearly had potential to do some damage. He almost knocked out Roy with the rubble of that door.
Flamez_Freak
envy got overwhelmed mainly because he was not expecting roy to stand a chance against him.....
the moment he thinks about lust....he runs away like a coward.......

Quick, short one line words are spam. Nobodies opinion is more correct than anyone else's. Everyone is entitled to voice their opinion, as long as they don't tell anyone else they are wrong. If you want to have a debate with someone DO IT VIA PM and stop clogging up discussions.

If you don't like penguintruth's opinions, why not say so on his blog? I'm certain he won't mind and will appreciate discussion being taken there.
Forsaken Love
lol omg i LOVE envys VA. The mement I heard it in the begining of the series it instantly became one of my favourite things of brotherhood XD His performance this episode I thought was brilliant, I loved it when he was talkin to Roy before their fight, reminds us of how deliciously evil and twisted envy is XD and his screams of agoney were also really well done hahaha, fantastic voice acting, made the episode for me

ya.......i didnt start an argument either......just said that everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.....

My Final thoughts about this episode

this episode starts of slowly....with mrs bradley being interviewed by a LaME radio channel...and she ends up blaming the central army for watever has happened in central over the past few hours...(masterstroke from roy and gang)......i lol'd at that guy's acting wen he was on the phone...that was so funny...ahahahaha......

from then on , the scene shifts to lab 3 , where all the action begins........all i can say is that roy was freakin kickass in this episode.....burned envy up pretty badly.....and the action sequences were so beautiful to watch, BONES has outdone itself this time around and surely , i could not have asked for more....the episode ended with a great cliffhanger moment....and i really dont think the preview has spoiled anythin...its not that obvious..........
the preview looks awesome and i cant wait for the next episode...............

I didn't realize I was in a debate. laugh.gif

Forsaken Love - Yeah, Envy's VA was really amazing in this episode. Minami Takayama is such an excellent voice actress, whether she's Envy, Dilandau, or Conan.
shanryelric
^that's right! still strange for me that she voiced conan too.
I don't know, maybe it's only me. but I really love Shin-ichiro Miki's voice on Roy. I mean, he sounds really mad and dangerous and a little bit scary too in a good way -,-a i dont know how to say, but it's just that he sounds good to me in this episode. biggrin.gif
Disasterpiece
VERY dark.

I've never seen this side of Roy, and I know he was affected by Hughes' death, but seeing him out for blood, half of me was like "YEAAH KILL ENVY! sniper.gif " and another side was like ermm.gif

When Hawkeye went after Roy and when the shot cut to Envy, I immediately knew what was going to happen.

Great episode. Can't wait for the followup

Been a while since I posted in one of these but I was just watching tonight's Adult Swim episode and was totally blown away by Envy's English VA. Maybe I just haven't heard the Japanese VA in a long time, but I thought she really nailed Envy's confession scene. It managed to be on par with the original dub. smile.gif

And of course the "Kill the white guys" line was laugh.gif That definitely deviated from the original line, I think.
Tombow
^ I agree. This is one of my fav Brotherhood English dub episodes, partly because of Wendy Powell's awesome VAing of Envy!
I enjoyed her voice acting in this episode very much. biggrin.gif

ETA: Oops, did I write that? *checks* yes I did!! XDD Thank you for catching it, Heza! Appreciated! ^^ (My brain was half-dead after translating "FMA MiloStar Prelude" manga late into last night. XP)
Edited. XD Thank you! ^^

^You mean Wendy Powell's awesome VAing as Envy, Tombow! XD Laura bit the dust with Travis in episode 19.

I got to REALLY geek over these episodes with Mike McFarland last September, and he's just as crazy over these scenes as we are. I told him Wendy needed to prepare her arse off, that's all I said, and he went off and told me they were right in the middle of recording these episodes, and Wendy had just recorded right before the con (the only people who still had to record was Travis and Vic). He then proceeded to geek over what Roy's flames sound like in surround sound. XD

I have to say, I was a tiny bit scared about how Wendy would pull this off, because I didn't really like her Envy in the original series, but thought she was improving a lot in Brotherhood, so my hopes grew. This was the first episode I was counting down the hours to see dubbed since 19 aired, and she blew my expectations away. Still like the Japanese more on Envy's part, but Wendy was more than satisfying with her performance and I'll be watching these episodes dubbed many more times. I was grinning like a hopeless idiot during the entire thing, and laughing out of pure joy. And this is just my opinion, but I LOVE the way Travis had Roy speak very clearly when he entered pissed mode. Just hearing that clarity in his voice made him sound even more ticked, as it made Roy sound like he knew EXACTLY what he was doing and wasn't going..."insane"...I guess you could say. So that made his rage seem all the more powerful, and truly sound like it he would mostly likely not return to his real self as Scar pointed out. And the echoes from his yells...yeah, I could go on and on about the little details. XD

And I never get enough over the Royai moments. "As I recall, you were crying over me." XD
EveningAlchemist
Yes, yes, yes! This episode in english was everything I had hoped for! Envy and Roy were really pushed to their breaking points and the VAs did a breath-taking job of showing that insanity! I really can't wait for the next one now... its gonna have some CRAZY emotion going on...

Me too. I'll be honest I was little concerned I'd be disappointed because I really thought Roy and Envy's Japanese VA's were so bloody brilliant in this episode but while Travis and Wendy definitely had their own interpretations, I really thought they did a fantastic job. For exactly the reasons you said, Roy sounded driven and his clarity of purpose is what made it so frightening. He didn't sound like a raving loon which made it seem all the more serious and defining.

I can't wait until this Saturday's episode now!(And it makes me even more annoyed the DVD's were delayed by another week late last month so I can watch it again!)
Tombow
For anyone who missed this episode, it will be on again tonight, directly followed by episode 54, on Adult Swim later tonight. smile.gif
