My initial thoughts:

- I don't need a "previously on" segment, Bones, thanks.
- Nor do I need more extra scenes...
- North City is a winter wonderland, at least!
- Streeeeeeeeeeeetcccchhhhhing the material
- Finally, Kimbley versus Scar! Oh wow, Scar is PISSED.
- Poor Yoki...
- Why the hell is it so damn difficult for somebody to beat Scar? Somebody just shoot him! Jeez!
- Strrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettttccchhhhhhhhhhh
- Solf? Not Zolf? Who cares.
- OLIVIER EYECATCH!
- Garfiel is so elegant!
- Buccaneer! Woooh!
- OLIVIER ARMSTRONG! So beautiful... so awesome...
- Olivier <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I'm such an Olivier Armstrong fanboy. I must admit, she's a big advantage this series has the first didn't.

(Olivier! <3)

This episode was good, but the preview with Sloth made me forget everything about it except for Olivia Armstrong and the Scar/Kimblee fight.
Michiyo-
- Another filler scene with Kimbley.
- And another: Ed and Al arriving to North City.
- And more Kimbley… We don’t need so many extra scenes, this pacing is really slow.
- Scar vs. Kimbley fight
- Nice Olivier eyecatch smile.gif
- The new characters are finally here! biggrin.gif I like the voice actors of Buccaneer and Olivier, they did a good job. We’ll hear Miles next week.
- Olivier is epic in the anime, too! And they kept the antenna joke! laugh.gif
Can’t wait to see the next episode, with more Olivier and and it looks like Sloth will arrive, too.
amestris_star
Olivier's presence made the second half of the ep so awesome <3

Here are the screenshots with epic Olivier: biggrin.gif

havn't see the episode yet, but from what people are saying, are BONES trying to piss people off by skipping manga material and then adding in filler scenes XD

It was better this episode than the previous one.

But then again, maybe it was just better because of OLIVIER MIRA ARMSTRONG.
Andie
Maybe it's me, but I did enjoy the filler bits with Kimbley and Scar. It makes Kimbley looks like a super sleuth and it adds to his awesomeness.

I usually like fillers like this... if only they just added things instead of removing them sad.gif ...

OLIVIER!!!!!!!!

I'm sooo excited! She's totally one of my favorite characters and is possibly the most bada** character in the whole series in my opinion. I love her to death! I want to see her with the Armstrong sparkles!!!!!

I think that my life will be complete when the scene she and Izumi and Sig and Alex do their tag-team against Sloth is animated. I will die of awesome.
EveningAlchemist
Oh yay! Exciting stuff here! The pacing feels perfect right now (or at least I have no complaints).
I loved Ed's reaction to the snow. Reminds me of myself, since I get really excited when I see snow falling. I hope it snows here soon! Lol when Ed slipped... <3

The battle on the train was intense. It made trains look cool! There were a lot of good shots there.

And of course... Olivier!!! Seeing her animated just makes her all the more awe-inspiring. Good voice too, for her and Buccaneer. The landscape in this whole episode was beautiful, with the snow and mountains - all just in time for winter.

<REMINDER>

Umm... I think we can all use this reminder again.. ^^

Some of us might assume that all posters in our FMA: Brotherhood forum are readers/fans of FMA manga. However, this is NOT true. We have many "non-manga-readers" on our board, including our fellow posters in FMA:Brotherhood forum. And, for that matter, we also have posters here who have "not read/been following FMA manga nor watched FMA-1 anime series and this being their first encounter with FMA storyline," as all fans of FMA: Brotherhood anime series are very much welcomed in this forum, regardless of the familiarity to other FMA series.
(And, personally, I treasure hearing their fresh viewpoints and opinions on the series!! ^^)

Therefore... everyone, please be kind, and please be diligent in using SPOILER TAGS when mentioning about possible future content of the FMA:B storyline. smile.gif

---------------------

Currently, this and all talk-back/episode content discussion threads for the FMA:Brotherhood series are declared as "Spoiler-tag Free Zone" for the part of contents that are ALREADY AIRED, but that does NOT apply for the possible future storyline contents.

If you would like to talk/discuss about the possible future contents without using spoiler tags, please head for Future episode discussion thread. We can talk about any and all possible future contents on that thread without using spoiler tags. biggrin.gif

- I like how they remembered to keep the scar on Ed's forehead. I was totally expecting them to ignore that sort of thing. I've been pleasantly surprised. |D
- Ed, you're such a bumpkin, but it just makes you cuter <3
- I kinda liked the fillers with Kimblee and his sleuthing.
- Man, that train fight was cool! (Angry Scar is angry o_o)
- Lol! Ed clinging to Buccaneer's arm xD

Olivier is so awesome, I cannot wait for the big fight comin' up. x]

I'm glad that unlike with Riza and Ross, they went for a tough woman voice with Olivier. It fits her pretty well.

And yeah as everyone's said already, seeing her animated was great. And next episode should be even better. Looks like they'll go back to covering two chapters in one episode, though.

I hope so. One horrible opinion is enough. (no offense)
Hagaren_4ever
Aw, this episode was too short. sad.gif

- The fight between Scar and Kimblee was.... eeeehhh... I wasn't fantastic. But it wasn't fantastic in the manga either, in my opinion.
- The little added bit about Resembool snow was sweet. I LOL'd at the transmuted snowman. laugh.gif Even though I know the whole thing was just an attempt to delay the events of the episode, I didn't mind. It was cute.
- Winry's gonna go north! Yay! I'm looking forward to the scene where Ed freaks out and lists the elements. laugh.gif

That scene with Ed listing the elements saved my butt on a Chemistry test last month xD. We had to memorize the first 20 elements, and I forgot to study. I sat down to take the test and suddenly a chibi Ed appeared in my mind saying "Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, Berylium, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen...etc." It was epic.

Yeah, I totally agree with you on Riza's voice, but I always thought that Ross should have a softer, gentler tone. Still Riza sounds to girly in Brotherhood which is a huge letdown since the first anime was able to do her justice.

I'll admit that Olivier didn't sound the way I expected her to but I liked it regardless.

All I have to say about this episode is....

OLIVIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEEEEEAAAAHHH!!!!!

Ummm....yeah. You might be. What's NOT to like about her???? She is one of the best characters in FMA IMO.
Forsaken Love
*squeel* I LOVED this episode, still have to see the subs, but I loved it! The only thing I'm a little miffed about, is that they didnt do a slower pacing through the whole anime, but that aside it was a really good episode, its early morning here atm and I've been shivering away looking at all the snow in todays episode, and when Ed slipped down those stairs I was like brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! I liked the filler scenes, particually the one with Ed and Al remembering christmas in Resembool that was adorable (Ed has bad taste even when it comes to snowmen i see XD) I LOVE kimbley, omg that outfit of his XD and his voice sounds completly sadistic and craaazeh, just as it should be XD Mei chan is absoloutly adorable! And of course Briggs! The fight in the snow was funny and OLIVIA!!! Shes so awesome, and eeee I was really sad when the episode ended, I actually really reaaly wanted to continue watching! Can't wait for next week =3
SneakyRuler
- the only complain about Kimblee I have is that his name's spelled "Solf", but hey, he's freaky so let's him have a freaked out name! loved his bits which showed his diabolical nature as well as his sharp intelect. he looked completely awesome, coming by a train and enjoying being stabbed.
- loved Ed's slipping scene, looked so realistic.
- Garfiel-san is adorable in his dress, he really is.
- bears of Briggs! nice to see you, Buccaneer and nice seeing your superior automail at work.
- Al didn't seem to have any problem revealing he's empty inside but I guess there's nothing to worry as Führer already knows
- was taken down that they were standing right in front of the fort the whole time, always imagined they walk a little
- Olivier! I like how her hair was moving in the wind and Ed refering to her as 'major Armostrong's nee-chan seemed sooo comical and out of place here. her voice is even deeper than I remember from the add weeks ago
- Ed's fascination with hight and size was funny
- can't wait for next episode, where we see the rest of Briggs and some fight

------
Edit: I used to be an anti-Olivier person in the beginnig. Then I realized it was just because she was mean to Ed when they first met and that make me go all offensive. lol. Love her now, of course. It's hard not to.

<Program Note>

Guys, since I seem to keep seeing this on this thread, allow me to do another reminder... ^^

I understand that this is the first episode we see Major General Armstrong in this anime series, and many may like to comment on that, such as "I'm excited/feeling gloomy/whatnot on Olivier's first appearance in the series...blah blah" in addition to how the "animetization" of this character looks, how the VAing was in this episode, what this character did in this episode, etc., and IMO those are quite fine because then we are still talking about the CONTENT of this episode.

However.....

If the sole purpose of making a post here is to declare your like/dislike of Major General Armstrong and adding your name to the Olivier "fan-list"/"not-a-fan-list," then instead of growing invisible "fan-list"/"not-a-fan-list" on this thread, may I suggest using our Character discussion forum for those and actually making threads and discuss that there? That way, we can also discuss far more than just like/dislike of this character there without being off-topic, while keeping this thread for actual discussions on the content of episode 33. biggrin.gif We have that forum for our discussions on FMA characters. Let's make a good use of it. ^^

ETA: Here you go... I opened the threads for you guys to talk about this character. biggrin.gif

* Olivier fans, you can declare your Olivia-fandom, and talk about all things Olivier on this thread.

* Those who are NOT fans of this character, you can add your name on "not-a-fan-of-Olivier" listing on this thread.

-------------------------

~ Thank you, and now that's taken care of, let's get back to discussing episode 33. ^^
zonkiethegreat
Episode 33 felt like it was 5 minutes long at the most!

Other then that, finally introducing Olivia was the highpoint for me and many others as well.

I especially liked her eye catch with the "bear".

Also Ed freaking out, with the rabbit in the background was hilarious. tongue.gif

The Kimblee and Scar fight was underwhelming for me. I wasn't very impressed.

I feel like each time I watch Scar fight, I'm watching Street Fighter, and Scar is either Ryu or Akuma. LOL
Hyperthia
Just watched this episode today! I had fallen behind and had to get all caught up.
-Ed and Al's fascination with the snow was just... so cute!
-I felt Ed's pain when he slipped sleep.gif That type of thing has happened to almost all of us.
-The flashback to a snowy Risembool was also cute. I don't mind this filler scene one bit. They look so adorable in their little snow caps! XD
-I think Kimblee's voice sounds high-pitched. That's just my opinion though.
-Heehee, Garfiel... "They'll die" smile.gif
-Jeeze! Ed is so awkward in this episode! I love it.
-Olivier pwns!! I like her voice; it suits her. She sounds just the way I imagined her.
-When Ed kept screaming about the size of the wall, was I the only one going, "That's what she said..."? I'm immature.
-Winry's going to go north soon! I can't wait for the next few episodes! biggrin.gif

Haha, me too.

-Nice seeing Olivia this episode, she looks awesome and her voice suits her well.
-This episode just seemed to fly by!
-Trust Ed to slip down the stairs, getting carried away as usual. tongue.gif
S.F. Thunder
KIMBLEY VS. SCAR YESSSSS.
The only issue I had with this fight is how much blood was on the train at the end. :/ Wouldn't the pipe hold the blood in? Whatever, it was cool anyway. and spelling Zolf with an S arrrgh

And Briggs is so pretty. <3 Living in Florida I never see snow, so it's nice to at least get fake snow in the winter.

All in all, I liked this episode, even with the slow pacing.

And to answer a previous question, I'm not much of an Olivier fan, either. I don't dislike her, but she's not that amazing to me.
Broken Chouchou
Shudder. They really hit the freezing weather spot on in this episode.

I really liked it. Some thoughts.

- The Kimblee fillers at the beginnig felt a bit unnessecary, didn't really contribute with anything, imo.
- The train battle was a little short, and the actual fighting lacked some awesome cinematic choreography, but it was still awesome. It seriously felt dangerous; the speed of the train, the freezing winds, the (most likely) slippery surface of the "cart platforms"... It felt like one bad step and you'd definitely be dead. And yet they were out there fighting, like two very brave men. And I liked how Kimblee approached in the armored military train and jumped over to the other one where Scar and crew was (again, defying the lethalness of the conditions. I think Kimblee's just crazy though, now that I think about it, and not so much brave).
- Added winter scene in North City was enjoyable. So was the winter flashback of winter Resembool.
- It's a bear! It's a giant mutated chimera! It's THE SNOWMAN! Oh wait, it's just Buccaneer... wait, IT'S BUCCANEER!! Which means...
- OLIVIER!! =D =D =D
- Concrete Fortress of Briggs! biggrin.gif
- "Enter, Fullmetal Alchemist" (at first I was unsure of her voice, but after rewatching it totally suits her. Yay!)
- And, THE END sad.gif
- What is it with putting extra scenes in after the ending all the time? I mean, it can work occasionally, for adding some suspense to the rest of the episode, or in the form of cliffhangers. But now it feels like it's happening in every other episode...
- So looking forward to the next episode. They better not have screwed this up with off-beat pace or something...
Billea_the_Turtle
Just some thoughts on this episode:

-Kimblee filler scenes can't be that bad right?
-Lol at Ed falling on the steps
-Cool Resembool flashback. Lol at the transmuted snowman
-Garfiel in his dress= funny
-That train fight was pretty cool. Scar got ticked off and Kimblee being Kimblee when he got impaled.
-Buccaneer! Ed clinging on to his automail = laugh.gif
-Yay! Olivia! Her voice toyally suits her.
-They kept the antenna joke!
-And it's over so quickly.
Jealous Rogo
You know, after last week's stretching, this week's stretching and by the looks of it maybe more stretching next week, I somehow get the feeling Arakawa has given BONES a call and said 'WHOAH THERE, SLOW DOWN' cause they were rocketing along before. Perhaps they're in danger of catching up with the Manga too soon or something. Either that, or they wanna get the most of out of Kimblee (and who could blame them?). All the added material this week, like last week, was nice and everything but I have to admit it just stood out as stretching more than anything else. It took Kimblee something like a page or two to figure out where Scar was headed, in Brotherhood it's taken him an episode and a half. Also since when does Scar leave behind transmutation marks? That didnt make much sense to me, but maybe it's just me being thick.

And what was with that random flashback to Ed and Al remembering the one time it snowed in Resembool? That's the sort of thing I'd expect from the first series. It stood out to me, much like the stuff with Kimblee, as just weird stretching for time. What's more I didn't find it a particularly funny or interesting flashback. I DID however, like the scene of Ed and Al carefully walking down the icy steps. That felt pretty realistic and was well animated.

Seeing Kimblee fight Scar was awesome, and it highlights Kimblee's weaknesses, after showing his brilliant mind. He's TOO smart, he overthinks and ended up getting speared because of it. It also points out that Scar has been fighting for a long time, meaning he's very strong (hence why the military are having problems with him, he was dangerous enough during Ishbal where he could take out five troops on his own). Also the performance of Kimblee's VA was awesome. I love how his voice quivers when he's talking about dying. I always felt Kimblee got off on death almost literally, and his VA really sold that. Considering Kimblee has one of my all time favourite lines in the series, I am so glad he's got a good actor playing him.

Buccaneer, was awesome to see but his VA felt flat. I always imagined him sounding alot gruffer and not so... old? He just seemed off. I like that Ed's alchemy doesn't work here and yet we're not given an explanation (and wont be til next week at the earliest). I don't know why but it just stood out to me. I think it's because in most animes (FMA being guilty of this as well) you'd have had Buccanner give a looooong speech about his automail. Which he sort of did but not to the extreme. I also think the scene with Al losing his head in front of Buccaneer and his men shows a massive difference in the Briggs troops. They dont even flinch, in fact they barely acknowledge it. Brigg's soldiers are tough.

Oh Olivier! I'm pretty pleased with her voice. It's strong, harsh and really told you everything you need to know about the queen of the badarses right from the off. I'm glad that they also kept her threat to Ed, especially as it was really an aside joke in the Manga that could've easily have been cut. Only criticism I might levvy at the appearance of Olivier, was it sort of ended about five minutes after the logical end. It should've ended, in my opinion, on when Olivier teared up the letter. If not then, at least on the antenna joke. It just seemed weird to have it end on Ed's observation on how massive Briggs is. Especially as this was the second time he'd done that.

All in all not a bad episode, everything is set up now for us to get into some of the best arcs in the entire series. It was reading these volumes that made me think a second anime would be something awesome. I loved all the Manga, but these arcs are when it really comes into it's own for me, though I'm sure there are people that disagree with me.

Next week: hooray Sloth appears! And he has normal skin tones! Huh, I have always pictured him with pale white skin. I have clue why cause of COURSE he has a normal skin tone. Weird. I hope his voice actor does him justice, Sloth's speech pattern is possibly another reason I love this arc. Also was the music for the preview this week a one off or the new preview for now on? Cause I LOVE it. If it's a one off, I really hope that's like 'Olivier's theme' or something because it fits her really well.

Also I predict more stretching next week, why? Because of what I said the beginning. I think they're slowing down because they're in danger of lapping the Manga. Which would just be hilarious.

<For further discussion on her name, please use Character name discussion thread. ~ Board Staff>
OT: And as a small aside, why do people keep calling her Olivia? I understood the confusion sort of when we only had fan translations to go on, but we've had Viz to go on for a while, and now her name has appeared in massive letters on screen in the eyecatch as Olivier and yet people still insist on calling her Olivia? It's not even like it's like Lin/Ling, Olivia and Olivier are two different names, from what I understand. Normally I don't get bothered by things like this (I switch around on Ling and Ran Fan alot) but this just seems odd to me.
Radadinator
This is the part of the manga that I don't remember much, since I always thought it was a little boring. Yeah, I'm slow, it took me a while to understand the whole reverse-transmutation circle? concept. Don't get me wrong, I thought Olivier was the most badarse character in the whole series, I just didn't start really loving her until some of the more recent chapters. tongue.gif

SO the filler scenes didn't feel like stretching to me. I actually thought they were all included in the manga until I saw this board.
But my favorite part of this episode is Ed's butt abuse and Al knocking Ed in the face with a snowball. Probably because both happened to me. And aww, the Risembool kids looked like anime South Park characters having a snowball fight.

Kimblee's pimp suit is amazing.

You say that like it's a bad thing. tongue.gif One of the things I love about the first series was that they took time to notice those little things, those tiny moments of humanity. Whether it was the brothers playing a simple game of cards, or a memory of their childhood, it was something small and special that made you smile and care about them a little more. Maybe it's silly or unimportant, but I personally found it very refreshing to have a moment like that in this episode. Ed and Al are legendary figures, and they carry dark, heavy burdens. It's nice to be reminded that even they had playmates and snowball fights, once upon a time...however short that time was.

It's funny...snow has a way of turning people into little kids again. There aren't a lot of things in this world that can do that to you. biggrin.gif
penguintruth
It will come across as nitpicking, but is there any necessity to including a recap of the previous episode for this episode? I think they've done it a couple of times before, and I didn't say anything, but it just feels like more filler here, because they're obviously stretching volume 16 out.

Speaking of filler, I have to be honest, I didn't mind it in this episode. There was still that nagging in the back of my mind that they crammed all of volume 15 into one episode in favor of this stuff, but it didn't make me angry like last episode's filler. Watching Edward and Alphonse arrive in North City, in awe of the snow, was a nice touch. I even sort of liked the bits with Kimbley.

What the hell is it about Scar that nobody can effing defeat him? Doesn't he seem a little overpowered? For Ishbala's sake, the guy's been chased by almost the entire military, including various State Alchemists, and he's come out with barely any injuries, except by the homunculi. And why don't the homunculi just gather and kill him as a team? That they've failed so consistently really takes away from their presence as a threat, and makes Scar look like some uber-god. That Kimbley, who can blow anything up, failed so badly is mind boggling. I don't care how rusty he is. He can blow things up by touching them. His failure is embarassing to watch.

Just shoot him! SHOOT HIM!

The big draw of the episode is Olivier Mira Armstrong and Buccaneer. Does anyone find it funny that guy who uses a weapon called the Crocodile is voiced by a guy who voiced a character named Crocodile? Olivier's voice, by the way, is perfect for the character, and gave me chills, in a good way. She's a damn fine woman. I can't wait for her to really throw her weight around.

She was one of the big reasons I decided to continue watching this show after the disasterous treatment of the Dublith arc. I knew if I stuck with it, I'd eventually get to Olivier. I may tear up from happiness.

Heh, that struck me as funny too. "Hey, it's the return of the opening recap narration! ...Here to recap their own silly padding."

I guess they just couldn't bear to let us forget that brilliant scene in which Scar escapes arrest by standing around until a train conveniently passes through, complete with heavy smokescreen.
Bag of Magic Food
But I am not interested in such a topic! So I will complain here about the official subtitles making her middle name "Milla".
hawkflame
Am I the only one who was somewhat underwhelmed by the episode? Not a big fan of the voice of Olivier (can't quite place why, though) and the whole Scar/Kimblee scene was a -lot- shorter than I remember it being.
BirdieNumNum
I was a bit underwhelmed by this episode too, but not as much as I was about last week's. To be honest, I thought the only memorable part of the episode was the introduction of the Briggs crew.

-The recap and all the scenes with Kimblee just seemed like more unnecessary filler to drag things out because they didn't add anything to the story. I don't care much for Kimblee, so whether we see more of him or not doesn't matter to me.

-I wasn't that impressed with the train fight either. I don't know why, and I can't really explain it, I just felt there was something missing. Also, I'm with penguintruth in that Scar seems ridiculously overpowered.

-I did however, like all the scenes with Ed and Al. Seeing North City and all the snow was pretty cool. Just in time for Summer laugh.gif I liked that they showed Ed slipping on the steps, and his automail freezing up. It's a nice touch and adds some realism to the story.

-Garfiel scares me blink.gif

-Yay, Buccaneer!

-Yay, Olivia! I loved her voice biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I remember I didn't really like her much when I first read these manga chapters. It wasn't until later on that she started to grow on me.
Forsaken Love
^ haha for me just in time for winter!

Lots of people have been saying they were underwhelmed by the train fight, I don't really get why though, I havn't read that part in the manga in a long time but I don't think they changed it...I thought it was good, and it's not really a omg action packed scene in the manga anyway

As previous posters have said, this episode does seem to be rather full of filler. I don't really care for Kimblee, so I wasn't too interested in the extended Scar hunting scenes with him. I did like Ed and Al's reaction to the snow. They lived in the east, so they couldn't have had much snow before. I live in the south, so I can totally relate to their amazement at all the snow.

Ed's battle with Buccaneer seemed to be less intense than in the manga. I don't really know why. It just didn't seem as exciting. Olivier was good, pretty much what I expected. I don't like her as much as a lot of other people do, so I don't really have any strong opinions on her. I liked that they kept her threat to Ed, but I noticed they changed it. Instead of ripping his cowlick antenna off, Olivier said she was going to cut him to pieces or something. Not quite as funny, but still good.

Overall, it was a decent episode, but nothing great.
TheWolfenAlchemist
happy.gif I loved the part when Ed fell down the steps because my friend did the SAME thing like, right before watching this with me.

Also, when Al peggged Ed in the face withe the snowball during the flash back, I laughed sooooo friggin hard!!! (we had a snowball fight ourselfs because there was snow on the ground when I watched that episode, weird enough.)
