Episode 8: "The Fifth Laboratory"
Seeking the truth about the Philosopher's Stone, Ed slips into the Fifth Lab of the Amestris military. There, he discovers the Alchemy circle for the Philosopher's Stone on the floor of the lab. But, he is attacked by an armored man who calls himself Number 48. Meanwhile, outside of the lab where Al awaits Ed, another armored man, Number 66 attacks Al. Fierce fights among them ensue, and during the fight Ed and Al discover that both Number 48 and Number 66 have their souls attached to the armors, like Al....

=======================================

Episode Summary: (courtesy of Edamame)
Desiring to learn more regarding the terrible truth behind the Philosopher’s Stone, the Elric brothers had snuck into the abandoned Research Laboratory Five. Outside of the laboratory, Al is confronted by a mysterious armored figure that goes by the alias of Number 66. While Al plans to defend himself against Number 66, Ed stumbles upon a transmutation circle that is used transmute the legendary Philosopher’s Stone. Before he even has time to ponder the transmutation circle, Ed is also met by armored figure that goes by the name of Number 48. Number 48 is entrusted with the job of eliminating all outsiders who have infiltrated the building, and that means eliminating Ed. Ed enters into battle against the armored figure, only to realize that the suit of armor is completely empty inside, just like that of his younger brother. Shocked by Edīs revelation, Number 48 reintroduces himself as Slicer, and proceeds to tell Ed that he was once a victim on death row. Ed asks if the artificial body of Slicer also has a seal that mediates the connection between his soul and body. Slicer shows Ed the blood-seal and tells him that if he is to destroy the seal, then he shall win the battle. Having seen Slicerīs weakness, Ed should have a upper hand in the battle ahead, but Slicer has another trick up sleeve.

Back at East City Military Headquarters, Colonel Roy Mustang and Maes Hughes discuss the current situation regarding Scar. Mustang tells Hughes that Scar is presumed dead and that it is safe to free the Elric brothers from their escorts Denny Brosch and Maria Ross. Unfortunately, Brosch and Ross learn that they have been outsmarted by the two brothers who Ross knows have snuck out to head to the laboratory. While Denny and Bross make their way to the laboratory, Ed fights against Slicer only to have his automail “act-up” in the middle of the battle, and therefore put him at a disadvantage against his opponent. Outside, the battle rages on between Al and Number 66. Al quickly learns that the body of Number 66 is exactly like his own after knocking 66īs helmet off. Number 66 tells Al that he is the infamous serial killer “Barry the Chopper”, who was once a butcher who grew bored of chopping meat and decided to chop up people instead. Barry begins to toy with Alīs mind by saying that Al may truly have never been human and that his memories were created.

Inside the lab, Ed is able to trick Slicer and remove his helmet that holds the blood-seal. Thinking he has won the battle, Ed lets down his guard only to be stabbed by the remaining half of Slicerīs body; Slicerīs body actually houses the souls of two brothers. Ed is able to defeat the artificial body of the Slicer brothers, but is unable to kill them. If Ed were to accept the Slicer brothers as inhuman, he would have to do the same for his own brother Al. In exchange for the humanity that Ed has shown the brothers, they agree to tell him more about the Stone. Before one of the brothers can even speak, he has his blood seal destroyed by the mysterious woman named Lust who is accompanied by a strange being named Envy. Envy puts pay to the other brother and antagonizes Ed for ruining their plan, but says that he is still a valuable sacrifice.
Outside, an explosion is occurring that threatens to destroy the entire lab. Envy carries a seriously wounded Ed outside to Al, Denny, and Brosch before disappearing. At the nearby jail, the psychotic murderer Kimbley reminiscences about his days in the Ishbal Massacre as the laboratory crumble to pieces.

Wow, in opposition to previous episode, that was awesome. The animation looked gorgeous, the voice acting even better (though I didn't like the last part, when Alphonse actually panted...). The pace was perfect - The idea to place only the battle scene was very good. Ed battling against Slicer was soo fast <3 The jokes were balanced and SD haven't popped every one minute.

To be honest I didn't like only two things:

-The "Fullmetal Alchemist!" guy. Man, I wanna choke him
-If I saw correctly on Keyhole, Barry didn't slice the guard head in halves? Too bad...

And the next week we're gonna see one of my favourite and most touching scenes~

He sliced him *needs to check coz I saw it with dratty Keyhole lag* but it wasn't as crude as in the manga.

Now... for the ep:

I loved it! It's my favorite after episode 5 till now *___*

(Ahahaha, and they put the "Get yourself a wife" phrase <3

Nah, this was perfect to me... and the upcoming episodes... can it be next week already?

I was surprised at the pace and how much manga material they covered in just this one episode. I expected them to get to Envy and Lust's appearance at the farthest, but to the collapse of the building, too? I'll have to watch everything again to get a real sense of how I feel about the episode. They definitely handled everything a lot better here then in the previous episode, though.

Considering how fast they're going, and how soon the Alphonse thing gets wrapped up in the manga, that certain event may occur in the next episode.

Well, if you recall, Hughes dies at the end of Chapter 15 and his funeral is in Chapter 16, so they may seperate it like that, unless they plan to do it like in the first series where it all happens in one.

If anybody missed or couldn't watch the stream, MoscowGolem and Zero-Raws have released the raw version of episode
C. Eduardo
Could someone PM me the link for the subtitled episode?
kkg22104
Currently downloading the raw version. @C. Eduardo, I'm not sure if the subs have come out yet, fansubbers are working hard but they're not quite that fast. tongue.gif

Anyway, I think the "certain event" is probably coming in episode 10. It's even titled "Seperate Paths," which was the same title as the manga chapter. It makes me sad that it's coming so fast though. sad.gif

Well, in the manga it actually IS very fast. Volume 4. So I consider that as being fast. Anime is reflecting that fastness in my opinion.

Subs are still not out... actually I prefer waiting a bit and getting a good version wink.gif
kkg22104
True true...still makes me sad though. sad.gif

I didn't really need subs to understand what was going on because I remembered what they said in the manga lol. Plus I could pick out curious words with my limited knowledge of Japanese. tongue.gif

I agree with Kasumisty. This was very satisfying episode!!! biggrin.gif
Things move fast in this episode, but it didn't feel rushed, and animation quality was much better than the last episode, IMO. Can't wait to watch it again with better quality sound and vid later!!

I can't wait the next episodeeee

Fubuki
And out of the shadow of lurking I crawl! biggrin.gif

Anyway, I thought that this episode was far better than the previous - even more so now that I'm watching an HQ raw instead of Keyhole... tongue.gif Is it just me, or have the action-oriented episodes been overall better animated so far? I didn't catch any off-model moments or annoying smirk lines this time around.

Al's voice acting, save his panting at the end of the episode (Oh, continuity! The Greed arc later looks back on this moment and laughs!), really stuck out to me as being particularly good. Lots of emotion. And wow, Envy was absolutely brutal - him striking Slicer down, strange as it is to say, held more of an impact for me here than even in the manga.

This week's episode was completely satisfying, and fulfilled pretty much all of my expectations. Hopefully next week will continue with this trend...
Michiyo-
Just watched the raw. This was a great episode, so much happened just in 20 minutes. The animation was really good, too.

Now I'm waiting for the subbed version to come out. biggrin.gif
I'll write more after that.

I really enjoyed this episode a lot. In fact I think since the Nina episode it might be the best adapted episode. But having Al pant was a pretty stupid mistake.

Anyways the one thing I liked that they moved the Roy/Hughes phone conversation to this episode instead of next (which is how it was in the manga). This way they can give more time to Al's issues without it feeling rushed and they put Hughes in another episode. A very smart move if you ask me.

kkg22104
So has anyone found a subbed version yet? I'm happy with my raw but it's even more enjoyable when I actually know what the characters are saying. (Though I guess it's not that big of a deal since the dialogue should match up with the manga anyway).

Yay, subs are out! Watching right now, will comment later. XD

EDIT:

Fantastic episode! The pacing was just right. Action scenes are very nicely animated and fluid. My favorite parts would be Maes telling Roy to find a wife and Barry taunting Al with the possibility of being an armor doll instead of a human with a soul and memories. That was particularly awesome and I cant wait to see the tension next episode. Envy's new VA is amazing. I love hearing my insane Dilandau mixed with some new elements for a wacky, Envy sound.
Sword Alchemist
I like how this episode wasn't dragged out for several episodes like in the first series.

The homunculi and Ed finally meet.

Maria Ross and Denny Brosh were awesome as always. Loved their facial expressions when they discovered Ed and Al were gone. Better enjoy these two now because soon they wont be appearing in the series for a long time. sad.gif
kkg22104
Did anyone notice that in the preview for episode 9 when Ed is talking on the phone (to Winry), he's sitting on a bench but his feet aren't touching the ground? It made me laugh tongue.gif
Jen_Elric
This episode was sooo good!
I had no complaints, except that they didn't keep the "I kill, therefore I am!!" line from the manga. I love that line!
Al's panting at the end didn't bother me much, cuz I know I've heard him gasp. Rie-sama did such an excellent job! Everyone did! Even Envy's voice actress!
And , we got to see (some of) Kimblee! HE should be making an offical appearance very soon.
As for the next episode, I can't wait for it! We should be some great performance's from Romi-sama and Rie-sama. I have to agree with some of you guys, that the "Certain event" should happen episode 10. Epsiode 11 at the lasest.
Oh, and the "Hurry up and get married" line was awesome. So funny! Epecially Mustang's reaction. XD
Full Metal Elf
OMG!!! The episode was AMAZING!! I absolutely LOVED it! ^____^

It was paced PERFECTLY and I can't think of any complaints!

Envy and Lust were perfect...Barry the Chopper was Perfect...I loved everything!

I especially LOVED the end with Mustang and Hughes ^___^ hehe...it was so great.

Next week looks like it'll be good again. It's seriously like...page per page now, ALMOST with the manga. I'm getting so excited now. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
Aribelle
Yay, this was a great episode! biggrin.gif

I thought the artwork looked loads better compared to last week and the pacing was good. Next week's episode should be awesome smile.gif

Loved the parts with Envy and Lust <3
penguintruth
I enjoyed the latest episode. The action was good, the animation was smooth, the music wasn't bad, and the voice acting was strong, too. I did miss the dark ambiance and desperation that was present in the first series adaptation of this material, but I didn't have much of a problem with them getting this arc over with as quickly as the manga did. They really managed to get a lot done in one episode and it didn't feel too sped up, either.

Minami Takayama really is an excellent fit for Envy. He was really starting to sound like Dilandau in this episode, which is good, since both characters are utterly demented.

There are a few things I'm getting pretty sick of, though. One is how Havoc's face always looks way, way too long. I mean, comically long. It's totally off-model, not resembling either his first anime or manga version. I know they only seem to show him in a little short scenes, but really, Havoc deserves better.

Another is the "previously on" segments. Those have to go, too. This and the narration over it make the show seem generic, and FMA is anything but that.
fullmoon
What an amazing episode! (after i watched it...i just wanted to watch it all over again XD)

The animation was stunning and the fight scenes were well animated and so exciting! There was a lot of intensity with Ed Vs Slicer. It was so fun to watch!

Barry was awesome, His little back story was so creepy...Also his new voice is great! I'm so glad he has a bigger part in this series, i love him in the Manga ^w^

The voice acting was really well done, Al in particular sounded really mature and strong (i noticed the panting too at the end of the episode on my second viewing but i don't really mind it...i hardly noticed it when i was watching the live (laggy keyhole) stream XD). Ed sounded great as always, Paku-san is amazing!. I'm really liking Lusts new VA! She has a great mix of evil and sexy XD Hehe, I like it.
Love the new Envy, the voice is so fitting! ^w^

Wow, the Homunclus make such an awesome entrance (i loved the music here)! Especially with Lust's shooting fingers XD (i wasn't sure what to call them lol).
Seeing Envy stab the 2nd Slicer brother's blood seal continuously...that was brutal.

I'm looking forward to episode 9, it's gonna be great to see Winry again!

lol, sorry for using so many brackets XD
Michiyo-
Watched the subbed version. All in all, this was a really good, satisfying episode.
The pacing was good; the animation was perfect, especially in the Ed-Slicer fight: that was awesome.
I hope the rest of the series will have the same quality like this episode.

Voice acting was brilliant again. Paku Romi and Kugimiya Rie did an awesome job again. I liked Barry’s and Slicer’s voice, too. I’m glad that Barry will have more role in the new anime later. biggrin.gif
As for Envy’s voice: it totally suits him.

The appearance of Lust and Envy: Envy killing Slicer and Ed’s facial expression was scary at all.
And poor Ed: he got called runt again.

Loved the Roy-Hughes conversation, with Hughes advising Roy to get married. biggrin.gif But I missed Riza from that scene.

Now I’m waiting for episode 9.
Flamez_Freak
best episode yet...
mira mirth
I agree with everyone who said that it was a great episode.

Barry! I love Barry. I thought his backstory was really well done.

Poor Al. That sequence always makes me headdesk, because, come on, Al, who are you going to believe - your dear brother or a stray suit of armour you've met for the first time in your life?.. Tells you how long that existential crisis has been brewing.

Envy and Kimblee... suitably horrible and creepy. And I've only just come to terms with the fact that finally, finally Envy is dead - but nooo, here he's walking around perfectly alive... =)

The mention of sacrifices and such like made me very happy, as anything pointing at manga plot tends to do =)

The "Fullmetal Alchemist" guy, though - my urge to strangle him grows with every episode.

I dislike these too and the little exposition about alchemy in the beginning and the "fullmetal alchemist talking eye catches".

But I think we just have to accept these things at least for awhile. Hopefully they will get rid of some of these things at some point.
Vagrant
Maybe it's just the fanslation I watched, but "Slicer the Homocide"? The manga just had them as the Slicer.
Also Barry saying he'd dismantle Al? Made it seem like he knew Al was just armour or something.

Ed seemed a little too ready to fight in the anime. Like there's an inevitability about it and it kinda loses the tension of a life/death situation a bit. I dunno, just something about it bothered me. It didn't seem as bad in the manga, 48's intro was just better.

Loved Al's badass moment after Ed says he's never beaten him.

Hughes and Roy's segments brought the comedy for this chapter. (people have said these conversations happen later in the manga?) Barry calling Al a hippo and their armour banter was all great stuff. As was Ed thinking he'd have to fight the Slicer legs.

Barry pulling out the blade was kind of disgusting which fitted well. Though the quick efficient kill wasn't as Barry-esque as the slicing the head off in the manga. It worries me a little that they're toning down the gore or something. Has me worried for future chapters.

Nitpick, but the sword was too close to Ed for Envy to grab without hassle, surely? (still, it just went missing in the manga)
But Envy killing the other brother was visceral and well done. Good sounds, voice acting, the arm animation. Nice job just overall.

The music was good. Noticing the recurring tracks. The big piece when Al was fighting Barry wasn't the most original composition, but it was exciting.
That said, I recalled the use of Brothers being particularly touching in the old anime there.

The Kimblee thing seemed a bit like pointless fanservice to me. I know it was in the manga, but considering Kimblee's role in the first ep of Brotherhood, new viewers might get the impression he's going to be some kind of big bad.
(another nitpick; his jail cell made more sense in the manga)

As for the fight scenes, a lot of the choreography seemed better (and somehow LONGER) in the manga to me. But I still found the fighting in this enjoyable.
Though I missed the touches from the manga like Ed worried about Winry beating him for his automail getting damaged.
Also think the manga did a better job explaining a few things, but considering the rush of Brotherhood, it's forgivable.

Overallllllll, the episode was good and was very much exciting. Though as with a couple of them, I'm happier with the episode before I read the manga version.
Nevertheless I'd probably rank it as the second best Brotherhood episode so far. But I'm still worried about the future of the series.

Still, not too long before things start getting really different from ye olde anime...

I think the previously on bits are fine. But the 30 second intro thing is just stupid and serves no purpose. Same with the eyecatches. And we need this precious time for more great manga lines and comedy.

The way the guy said Fullmetal Alchemist the first time made me think he was just trying to piss us off too. >_<

Excellent! One of the best episodes for now. They've done the Barry's story very well.
Just... Lust's nails seems like tentacles here.

PS: I think, too, that the "the last episode..." part is useless.

I know! I watched the same translation and I thought both those things were weird too. The Slicer thing especially. Maybe the original line went, "I am the serial killer Slicer", which somehow morphed into his name in the translation...

I'm very much with you on this. I think the previously on bits will actually be helpful later on, when the plot goes into dizzying complexity. However, the eyecatches and the intro thing are a waste of time, IMO, and with time being such a great issue here, it seems doubly unnecessary.

That said, maybe the intro thing will go away later. Y'know, once the creators figure that there's no need for Alchemy Laws 101 before every single episode, because we aren't as slow on the uptake as they think...
Kirara
Well I don't mind the presence of the eye catches themselves. Most anime series have them they appear before & after a commercial break. I just wish they would stop with the English Fullmetal Alchemist. I think we can have the eye catches without anyone speaking and they would be a lot less annoying.

As for Slicer the Homicide I am pretty sure that was a translation error/choice. In fact I never hold dialog against the actual series because there can be many interpretations of dialog once you start translating it. Really when I compare Funimation's subs to fansubs a lot of things end up being slightly different.

QUOTE

This always happens with manga to anime conversions. I don't really think these things are that important to the story so I don't mind that much.
Chiyo
I think this episode especially shows how much the animation has improved from the first series. When fighting the characters move with better flow and the expressions have a greater range. Not to mention that perfect balance of not too much but just enough bloodshed. I think they crammed a lot into this episode without compromising on what's important.

With the way its going, I predict mid-way guy will get to the stage of "give me an 'F', give me a 'u'" and we'll all lose the will to live.

I know this is probably just because I'm a fan of her, but it's nice that Winry is already being established as important for something other than automail (this episode almost contradicts that even). Thought next weeks won't have as much action, Al's character will develop for it as will Winry's, and even Ed's to some extent. t's a small emotional stumble in comparison to what we know is coming, but it is still a vital moment.

One final, horrifically fangirly note, Ed had some rather sexy looks going on this time round.

Agree with some people who thinks that summary of the previous episode and alchemy introduction is useless. Damn, I wish they'll get rid of this when they change OP & ED themes.

I was kinda dissapointed of how they show us violence and blood, it's not so brutal as in the manga. Guess it happens with all anima :\ but the matter is, in FMA there is a lot of cutting limbs and blood. (for example, Ed from chapter 76, or Wrath vs Old!Greed) I dun wanna it to be cut or censored...
Imbris
I'm surprised more people aren't mentioning the music...especially what was playing when Lust killed Slicer. That was a fantastic musical moment; I got chills.

What an awesome episode, at least compared to few previous ones. ^^'
I don't have anything important to say, really, but I just wanted to comment on the new voice actors. Right now I love every each of them (except Gluttony's o_o), especially Envy's seiyuu suits him/her.
Someone said something about Maria's voice being too high for her, but I think it's nicely feminine and still strict enough.

I hope that since next ep will be less action and more, uh, I dunno, conversation? Well anyway I hope its animation quality won't drop dramatically. Though I'm pretty sure it will, since in this one the animation in e.g. the fight between Ed & 48 was gorgeous.
Trakonda
Finally I got to see this episode too!

One of the best ones, I have to agree. The artwork was great and the animation top-notch! smile.gif and I loved how things happened manga-way this time.

I also have to agree with the summary.. it's not really needed here (unless someone has a memory of an ant and forgets everything in a week.. which I really don't believe XD ) Plus.. the voice is just-- ugh. I don't like this old man. When the first FMA had Ed and Al explaining about alchemy before openings, it sounded SO much better. But heck, it's probably just a matter of time before I'll get used to it.

And yes, the music when Lust and Envy appeared was gorgeous! Can't wait to see the next episode with Al's doubting and such. It was one of my favourite moments in the manga, after all. smile.gif
Envy II
I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. I thought it was done really well! Although Al panting was weird.

Also, I really loved the phone conversation between Hughes and Roy, and I thought Hughes' expression was hilarious. It made me laugh out loud, but am I the only one who realized that the very first time (I think, anyways) that Roy was shown his mouth was on the bottom of his face? It looked really weird to me, but maybe I'm crazy.
FullMetalFist
I thought the animation was lacking, I did not think it looked all that great. I felt disappointed. Come on, when the building was falling down and everything was shaking. It looked terrible, it just looked like they shook the frames up and down. That is some terrible animation. When Ed was fighting slicer, his back flip looked awful, it just looked like an elongated blur. I thought this episode was the worst one animation wise. I do not know how you can just settle for horrible animation shots. It was very disappointing. The episode was ok, Al fighting Barry, I thought those shots were great. That ground shaking shot really bugs me, it was very poorly done. I think the first series still looks better, I am not biased, I am strictly looking at it as art, and I am not impressed. I think they need to step it up a notch. O well, go ahead crucify me now.

I won't crucify you, because it's your right to have your own opinion about the anime. However...I think you're totally wrong. I'm really not sure where your opinions are coming from, because for the vast majority of the new FMA so far, it's been animated beautifully. You seem to be finding a couple minor things per episode and exploiting them as if the animation is a complete mess as a whole. I really don't know what else to say...I suggest that for next week: just sit back, relax, and enjoy the anime; and stop thinking too hard about it. Okay...maybe that was a bit of a crucifixion. Sorry. smile.gif

Um, from what I know earthquakes or falling buildings are ALWAYS presented by shaking frames. How would you show it then? Animation was second the best. I don't know what's wrong with the backflip, it looked great, the blur was used, because Ed was CLOSE to the "camera". It's a common thing to do and has with dynamics of the scene. Please, do not say animation was bad by giving that examples. Episode 7th WAS badly animated.

And I guess you meant that:

With the way its going, I predict mid-way guy will get to the stage of "give me an 'F', give me a 'u'" and we'll all lose the will to live.

I must admit I laughed. But really, that voice makes me facepalm every single episode...

I'm with people in this being one of the best episodes so far. My favourite parts are the appearances of the homunculi and Kimbley - the music there is good, there's a certain level of epic-ness about the scenes. And I think the first meeting of Ed and the homunculi (and them killing the Slicers) made a bigger impact on me in this version than it did in the manga - and that's impressive considering how huch I generally like the manga. This is practically where the plot starts, and it got the beginning it deserved.

Somewhat annoyed by Al panting in the end - how could they make such a stupid mistake? I'm half-sure that might have happened in episode 3 as well (thought that might've been Ed instead).

And I must say, Kimbley is deliciously creepy in this version. I can't wait to see more of him - which is a long time away, but I'll have Ling in the meantime so it's OK.
