Which box art style do you prefer?

Fullmetal Alchemist (first anime series)
or
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (second anime series)?

Pictures of the box art and package contents for FMA:B DVDs 1 and 2

DVD 1:

DVD 2:

I quite like the new box art designs, and I am particularly fond of the typeface and lettering style utilized on the new packaging as I believe that the small, understated serif font lends a sophisticated feel to the new designs cool.gif . This being said, I also very much enjoy the DVD box art from the original series as well (I am working on collecting the large Japanese posters that feature the box artwork from the first series, but they are quite difficult to find and I currently own only five of the thirteen designs dry.gif ).

Thank you, rzerox21xx and rzerox21xx! The pics of FMA:B DVD sests look awesome! biggrin.gif

What vendor do you use to order goods from Japan?

I have traditionally gone with amazon.co.jp, but for the new FMA:B DVDs I am trying out cdjapan.com (their interface allows you to ensure that you receive a first press edition with all of the extras). Also, the shipping rates at amazon.co.jp are fairly unattractive these days.

Oooh, thanks so much for the pics Edward Cardinal Elric! I really love Arakawa's artwork, but the animation team drew some really good covers too! biggrin.gif
tinlunlau
Any word on the Hong Kong BD/DVD release yet?
After all, the show has been airing dubbed in Cantonese for a while now.
Radadinator
Hmm, I like both series' volume covers. I love how soft the first series' designs are, and Brotherhood seems to be going for a...I can't really describe it, it's sort of similar but more simple. But I always did have a problem with FMA 1's Vol 1's cover. Bones clearly gave Ed steroids.

I wonder if anybody will put up the Blind Alchemist and the 4-panel comics online for about three days before companies get paranoid.
Full Metal Elf
VERY nice! I can't wait for Funimation to start releasing the DVDs here.

Do the Japanese ones have English subtitle options?

I love the covers.

I bought vol. 1 (pics are in the Merch thread) and have pre-ordered vol. 2 (and 3 in the near future) off of Play-Asia. Despite it costing more, I usually go with either UPS or Fed Ex on their shipping as it arrives on the same date that it was released in Japan (for example: Vol. 1 was released on the 26th there - still the 25th here in US - and shipped. Vol. 1 arrives to me on the 26th in the US).

@Full Metal Elf The only English with the JP dvd/bd is in the copyright warning and in the main menu - everything else is in Japanese, no subs.

Edit: Here are the real pics (taken with my iphone so sorry about the quality of the pics)

Full Metal Elf
Ok, that sucks then...lol, I don't know Japanese.

I guess I'll have to wait then sad.gif

I believe it's also on DVD, but I personally went with Blu-ray as the US shares the same region code for blu-rays with Japan...and I use my PS3 as my BD player.
Kyelinn
Does anybody know if Funimation plans on releasing The Blind Alchemist on their site at all? If not, does anybody know if it has been fan-subbed yet? I'd really like to watch it. If somebody has any links to it, could you please PM them to me? Thanks in advance!

It's already fansubbed in English. Hell, even in Spanish XD. Just search the Net for it and you will surely find it. wink.gif

Still, I recomend the gaiden over the OVA.

EDIT: To be honest, I've only watched the Spanish fansub, and most of the time the translation comes from an English version. But given that I can't find the English fansub either, it seems this is one of the few exceptions. I can PM you if you want it even in Spanish though. sleep.gifU
Kyelinn
Right, I've read the gaiden and actually own it but I'd still like to see it animated. I actually HAVE been searching the net and I've not come across anywhere that I can watch it.

It looks so great! I can't decide if that's because the design is so simple or because it's so rich with colour and detail... I really liked that used a lot of red, because red to me is just the colour of Fullmetal Alchemist. The covers are very cool too, with the lighting and stuff. (Ed's arm always looks so real when they paint it up like that...)

Can't wait to get my hands on it! <3

Can anyone who owns the DVDs with episodes two and five please tell me if they fixed these scenes (as DVDs almost always touch things up, and this goofs are kind of... well... silly) and possibly give screenshots of the new frames if they did:

1 - In episode two of Brotherhood, right after Ed has his surgery and Trisha's Lullaby begins playing, Ed and Al spar before Ed transmutes his automail into his signature blade. However, the animation has a bit of a screw-up here and Ed's arm is only half automail. Did they fix this on the DVDs?

2 - In episode five, when Armstrong is fighting Scar, Armstrong attempts to finish Scar off once he's pinned against a wall, but Scar reacts and attempts to fire back at Armstrong mid-blow. Armstrong notices this, stops his attacks, and jumps back. At this point, his gloves are missing. Was this fixed on the DVDs?

Sorry for the questions, but I really want an answer to them and this is probably the best chance I'm going to get haha. Thanks so much for your help!

Yes they fixed that (as that was the first thing I looked for in that episiode) and as for episode 5, I'll take a look again tonight, but I'm pretty sure they fixed that as well.

Alright, thanks a lot. Would you be able to provide screenshots if possible?

Do the DVDs have a lot of changes or just a few like the above examples?

Screens maybe hard to capture (I have them on blu-ray, not dvd so the best I can do is actually take photos...)

As for the changes, mostly color correction and goofs are fixed. Also, everything just seems brighter and smoother compared to watching it on my computer.

So would foreign language dubs use the cleaned-up DVD versions or the original broadcast versions? (Hopefully there won't be too many idiots crying "Funimation changed stuff!")

I'd probably guess they'd use the dvd versions for the dubs as there are some pretty glaring goofs at times.
Bag of Magic Food
Yeah, I suppose it would be easy enough to switch whatever they recorded from one version to another if they got the newer version later on.
Envoyofuno
Alright, well thanks for your help.

What kind of other goofs have there been? I really haven't noticed any beyond the two that I previously mentioned.

And dubbing companies almost always use the DVD releases instead of the broadcast releases. One of the reasons it takes most dubs a large amount of time to be released, they need to wait for some DVDs to be released before they can start.
Kale Mustang
I didn't mean goofs as in 'oh wow that was totally missing before in the previous scene' but rather in some inconsistencies with the art.

Definitely though, once you have the dvd/bd copies, you notice just how much better everything looks on a tv. My favorite thing was easily Mustang's reflection in the first episode when he was talking about MacDougal while staring out the window - hard to see on my computer but easy and clear to see on my tv.

EDIT:

Received today. Will post more pics once I get home.

Pardon the double post...

Just arrived courtesy of Amazon.jp:

Inside the liner notes, it shows how they animated the burning of Lust. Also there are four 4koma as usual... as well as the eyecatch card album.

One question that bothers me. I wondering if the dvd set that funiamtion is releasing is using the broadcast or the dvd.bluray versions of the episodes. That's what I'm wondering, if they going to take the bluray/dvds of the japanese release and use it there with the corrections and such that was notice by Kale.

I'm really hoping they will keep the 4komas too, funimation did a great job with the FMA first series dvds including extras and booklets of interviews and character sketches and such. I'm really hoping they do the same quality and well being released on 13 episode disc made made me a tad bit worry.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES EARLY UK DVD RELEASE EARLY UK DVD RELEASE EARLY UK DVD RELEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSE.
oh god i've been waiting for this for a VERY logn time. great to know that we're getting it soon. THANKYOU TOMBOW
A Pierrot's Aria
I hope that news of it coming out in the UK first is true. : ) That'll mean I don't have to import it from the US like I normally have to do. It's a shame I haven't seen it up for preorder on any UK websites yet.
deet-tastic
I hope that unaired episode is more on Ishval.
That would make me SOOOO happy.
Bag of Magic Food
I was thinking they might have started on plans to develop "The Coal Mining Town" and "Battle on the Train" as a single episode, then shelved them for a while to save time, then came back and finished the episode in order to provide a DVD extra. Does that sound likely at all?
Vlyse
Although I think Ishval is more likely, "Battle on the Train" would make an interesting fit with episodes 31-34 as well. Ed and Al -were- on a train to the North at the end of episode 32. biggrin.gif

I don't think they'd cover Youswell because of the flashback in episode 38. Tales of the Master would be nice, but that's a gaiden, and the wording of the article makes the unaired episode seem more than another OVA, such as a filler more than anything else. dry.gif
Bag of Magic Food
You reminded me how I jokingly try to find patterns in what gets cut from Brotherhood. So far I've figured out that Bones hates showing:

1) Anything in Yuuswell. (Yoki's story was only shown grudgingly, very late into the series and with the barest essentials.)
2) Envy and Gluttony doing stuff together. (Lust+Gluttony must be their One True Pairing!)
Kale Mustang
To me, there's no point in showing either Youswell or 'Battle on the Train' as they were covered already in the first series - so why show it again? I mean, stuff they already aired previously had been trimmed for Brotherhood (case in point, ep. 25 of the first series was already ep. 10 in Brotherhood).

I'd love for the unaired content to be Ishval, but it just may be another gaiden.

In any case...

This contains a drama CD as well as the BD and eyecatch cards.
Bag of Magic Food
The thing is, I can't think of anything else that could have been adapted that wouldn't be either a gaiden or just a few scenes that were skipped in an otherwise finished episode. It's supposed to be a whole new episode, not an extension of an existing one, right?

And as you just pointed out, Brotherhood's early episodes were trimmed down from the way they were adapted in the first series, so I can easily imagine that Youswell & Bald were going to be two halves of the same episode; then somebody in charge didn't like the structure or pacing of it, so they quickly turned the story of Yoki into a brief mention in the next episode.
