And... upon seeing/hearing the OP, I'm starting to tear up.

Same here.

@A Pierrot's Aria: thanks for the links, I'll add them to the first post in the Fma: Brotherhood O S T-1, O S T-2, O P & E D Theme Musics Discussions Thread. ^^
Chiyo
That is some opening, I simply adore it! Not just because of the Ed/Win (future fortelling?) but everything about it sums up the conclusion to the manga. Edgy, dark, weepy and powerful.
shanryelric
SWEET! thanks, Michiyo!!
and yeah, so many edwins here, like this biggrin.gif

The Truth Winry made me lol so hard. So hard. XDD same with the berserk Ed. XD
Poor Al got little forgotten in the OP. Yay for 2 seconds of Al body and some flashes of his armor self. AH! WINRY CRIED! She was supposed to cry from the happines! Bad Winry, breaking the promise she made with Ed! I loved the Greedling and Bradley vs Scar moment, but the rest... I didn't like it. At all. Whole thing was emo and angsty, Fullmetal isn't like that! :<

I kind of get the feeling people are missing the point of this opening a little bit, and the whole Winry crying in the opening thing you pointed out kinda encapsulates this.

Winry promised she'd only cry tears of joy.

She's crying in the opening.

...therefore I'm guessing that's a subtle indication of something good to come.

This opening is bittersweet, and the more I watch it the more I like that. This series was never gonna end on a triumphant note, it was always going to have a bittersweet finale.

I think calling it emo and angsty is a bit far...

Oh and I swear to god having watched it a couple more times that Bones has finally given us an opening where all seven homunculus (plus Kimblee and Father) appear in the opening but have given it to us in 1.5 seconds, cause I can see Gluttony in that opening and I bet if I look hard enough I'll see Lust as well.
Kasumisty
I seriously love it, the animation, the spoilers and the tone. I'm intrigued by Elrics' house at the end, but with green roof...

I think calling it emo and angsty is a bit far...

Tell it to the person who pointed is at a plus, too, not only me who pointed is out as minus. XD

Well, I don't think that Winry crying means that something good will happen. Judging from the angsty OP (lol, it is angsty for me, sorry, the crying Winry and Riza and blind Roy and no dynamic at all made that impression) and not really positive ED I guess that the end will be rather bittersweet. I kinda hope for Ed's death. And no, it's not because I don't like him. If Al (who I love) would die, too, I'd like the end because I'd remember it for the long time, but I just think that it'd be too much, so I'm going for Ed ;f.

But anyway. I think the truth!Winry will never fail to make me lol. Whole thing is so sad, and I'm laughing because I have that truth!Winry before my eyes XDD. A way how animators seems to be Ed fanboys/fangirls (and Ed/Winry) for me makes me kinda lol, too, but I guess it's just because Ed is main hero and Ed/Winry is the closest-to-canon pairing XD
rzerox21xx
thanks for Kasumisty for noticing the house they show right after sleeping Ed with Winry. That's not the Rockbell house, and the Elric house should be burned to the ground. what are they hinting at? they rebuilt it?
Kasumisty
And just one more random thought: Lolol, afterglow. Winry is really at it. She should be more merciful towards the main character after these 20 chapters of Promised Day.

*shuts up now*

Because of the quality I thought it was Trisha. And now that you point it out, I can't help but LOL, too. laugh.gif

Roy going blind in the manga was quite heartbreaking, so I'm unhappy that it's being spoiled this early. dry.gif

Sleeping Ed is sweet.

I was expecting a more action-packed opening but this one is good, too. Sad and angsty.
RoytheFlameAlchemist
I like the new op, not the best for now (maybe i start to love it later), glad to see some edwin and slightly royai, also good to see spoilers aresnt that obvious so this ruins nothing for "no manga readers".
Full armored Greed and GAR Bradley look fabulous.

Probably the ones that are missed are May and Pride , even though they appear in the final battle.
Also agree with that too much Winry with Ed could be foretelling (may have a happy ending? at least for them , i feel sorry for Al)

Again, as with most spoilers in this opening, I think it's too subtle for people to even pick up on if they don't know it's coming.

Literally the only thing I consider to be a proper spoiler is the shot of... somethings... eye that shows five people. That is a true spoiler. The rest is foreshadowing and pretty subtle foreshadowing as well I might add.

Why am I reminded of a few months back when I was ranting and raving about people throwing around teh term 'deus ex machina' around too much. Same thing applies here.

To me at least, a spoiler is say... Greedlin appearing in Opening 3 before he'd been introduced into the series. EVen if you didn't know he'd become Greed, seeing ling with the other Homunculus was a dead give away that he was going to change sides at least. That's clear and if you don't know about the manga, you still realise something is up. Same goes for Greedlin betraying the homunculus being spoiled in Opening 4 Gluttony's true form in Opening 2.

Alot of what we've had here, and actually alot of the so called 'spoilers' in openings are just foreshadowing. Take Lust and Mustang fighting in Opening 2, unless you knew she was destined to die in that opening, you wiouldn't have said 'OMG I CAN'T BELEIVE THEY JUST SPOILED HER DEATH FOR ME'. Same goes for;

Hughes death in Opening 1.
Al's arm in Opening 2.
Envy's true form in Opening 2.
And pretty much all the spoilers in Opening 5

Sorry to seem like I'm having a go at anyone in particular, I'm not, I'm just trying to argue against this idea that Opening 5 is full of spoilers. It's full of foreshadowing.

In my humble opinion obviously.

On a different note; did anyone else when they first saw the new opening go 'well that was a nice ending, where's the opening?'
Vlyse
-I do like how even Rose has screentime over Pride.
-Why does Bradley have to shed a tear? He is badass, not this..tear..thing.
-Why is May always paired with the chimeras?
-Trisha giving Ed her hand under a tree in the rain is awfully similar to the 2nd OP of FMA1.
-The scream at the very end is terrible.

Most to least favorite for me: 5, 2, 1, 4, 3.
Tombow
I seriously LOVE this opening! Thank you so much, Michiyo- for posting the link! ^^

<Reminder>

I understand some of you guys would like to discuss how some scenes in this new opening may/may not show spoilers...
The irony is that, while discussing this opening vid possibly being spoilerish, if we are not careful and include some of the content from FMA manga storyline WITHOUT using Spoiler tags, we may end up revealing some of the possible future FMA:B anime episode content to unsuspecting readers. hence....

Please remember that not every poster/vewer of this thread have read FMA manga, or being up-to-date with FMA manga reading. If you'd like to include the possible future storyline for FMA:Brotherhood anime on your post while on this thread, please make sure to use SPOILER TAGS. smile.gif

And for me it goes like this

Sorry but again is my least fav overall, I just... don't like it as much as the rest lol.

Of course all these openings beat the pants of the first series openings.

...oh my god they are.

Okay screw everything I said about this not having massive spoilers in it now

Thoughts:
contrary to popular belief- WHY IS BONES PORTRAYING WINRY AS ED'S MOTHER????? I mean, not only is he/viewers flying into her er bosom in truth win but also her watching over ed as he sleeps...like a mother...

Other points- I loved how they portrayed Ed and the homunculus in that 1.5 sec shot with the sketchy drawing, it was beautiful. around best op by far, I absolutely love it! Trying to toss up between Again and this, and the Ed is good too.

FMA Brotherhood ops are still the best!!
Vlyse
I'm not seeing Ed's left arm in the end of the OP. Just his right, which should be normal. The only time we see Ed's left arm is covered in a sleeve, which doesn't say if the automail is gone or not.

Is there anything I'm not seeing?

Oh Hell yeah!!
It's up to par to with OP4 for me. I'll admit. i didn't like it the first time but that was with the stream but after rewatching it...i loved it! There were so many shots that absolutely blew me away.

I agree! It was chaotic but really gorgeous at the same time. The sketchy lines really reminded me of scenes in Gurren Lagann.

@fimsen: Seriously? 8D Ed with no automail. Holy aqefwjgvj *dies*

You got it confused! Ed's automail is his right, his left arm is normal and that's what we saw in the end of the OP. I can't see Ed's right arm too so I don't know if it's flesh or not.

About the "spoilers"- I do think that they're too cryptic for most non-manga readers to pick up on them. Even I, who's caught up with the latest chapter, took a second or third viewing to catch them, so it's not going to be immediately obvious for someone who isn't caught up.

As for the OP itself, I have to admit I was expecting something more energized and rockin' - like "Period" was, and like "Rewrite" was for the first series. But after watching it a couple of times, I do believe that a more somber and melancholy approach is the right way to go. 1) it does provide for a nice departure from the previous opening. 2) It really does fit the dark mood of the ending arc. 3) It leaves a lot of the storytelling elements and action in these last 13 episodes, so no potential spoilers as far as that is concerned.

I like it, I'm not yet sure where I would rank it alongside the other 4 OPs (it would have to settle in after a few days), though it wouldn't surprise me if it ended up near the top.
Kasumisty
Hearing it few times already, I decided that I love the song. It's extremely nostalgic. The scene with Ed turning and changing into feathers or something reminded me of Breeze from Slayers (the last opening as well).

I don't have an idea why Winry was shown as Truth with that screaming Ed afterwards. Foreshadowing?'

And I don't know what the hell is that, but it's freaking awesome.

Crying Riza ;.; So cute and sad at the same time.

And though I don't like EdWin, I loved the last shot. Just because.

I'm also wondering if the house shown at the end is a sign that Elrics will rebuild it.

shanryelric
just curious, how can you all find the HQ pics?
Vicious74
Lol as usual people do nothing but whine about spoilers that barely exist and don't mean anything unless you've read the manga.

Anyways, decent OP, but it's way too mellow, no action sequences and it has a severe lack of Kimblee, Pride and Envy. Even Mustang's subordinate from Ishval has more screentime than them ffs.
Kasumisty
^Well, Kimblee, Envy and Pride are in the "flames" sequence.

I took some screencaps of the "flame sequence" because they're awesome:

Jealous Rogo
Oh sweet holy mother of unintentional comedy Kimblee looks hilarious in that still

In a badass way obviously

I like that they actually included all the villains in that one sequence, I'm amazed how much Kimblee has been featured in the openings.

shanryelric
SO, this is the lyric of the OP:

yatto mitsuketa atarashii asa wa tsukihi ga jama wo suru
mukau saki wa "tsugi" janakute "sugi" bakari oikaketa

nari yamanai yousha nai omoide-tachi wa yuru....e kuresou ni mo nai
sorosoro ka na tesaguri tsukareta hou wo kattou ga kobore ochiru

ame wa itsuka yamu no deshouka zuibun nagai aida tsumetai
ame wa dou....e boku wo erabu no tsutsumarete ii ka na

ame wa yamu koto wo shirazu ni kyou mo furi tsuzuku keredo
sotto sashida....a kasa no naka de nukumori ni yorisoi nagara..

and the translation:

Daily life hinders The new morning I've finally found
Instead of heading onwards to What's "next" I kept chasing after what's "past"

Ringing ceaselessly My merciless memories Seem to have no intention of forgiving me
I suppose it's about time Fumbling blindly Inner conflict spills down My tired cheeks

Rain When will it cease It's been an awfully long time It's cold
Rain Why does it choose me Maybe it's alright To be enveloped in it

Rain Not knowing how to stop It will keep falling today too, but
Under the umbrella that you Gently held out I will be nestling close to Your warmth

taken from: http://gurakko.livejournal.com/129316.html#cutid1 and arrange it myself (because in the site there's no OP size lyric, only the translation)
Nice lyric, love it!

The most I said while watching was;
"Oh my crap!! Did they just seriously throw that in!"
"Oh my crap! Mustang! Did they just seriously do that?"
"Oh my crap! They showed Scar taking off his coat to show his arm"
"Oh my crap! Greedling being awesome. Did they just seriously throw that in?!"

I loved it. biggrin.gif

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG I was just thinking that none of the FMAB ops live up to the standard of the FMA ones, and then I saw this.

The flame sequence was genuine disturbing and amazing.

Riddiculous amount of EdWin. And WinBoobs. And EdSquintingInSexyMelancholicWay. Why am I complaining? I love it. And the music is wonderful.
shanryelric
EdSquintingInSexyMelancholicWay ?? o______O'' where?? I don't remember that scene.
well yeah, massive amount of edwin! biggrin.gif

Well, woah, now when I saw this without lagging KeyHole, it's pretty amazing, very spoilerish but hell, whatever.
I'm happy they even put Rebecca in, I really like her xP But Truth!Winry...WTF? Foreshadowing? At the beginning I also thought that it was Trisha...a lot of Edwin, they support it, eh? The Mustang thing...now I just canb't wait to actually see the whole episode
Broken Chouchou
At first viewing, I didn't really like it right away. The sound just didn't feel right. Spent the first watch-through getting used to it, taking in all the new stuff. The visuals were great, no complaints there. And I didn't think the song was bad, absolutely not, but I just wasn't sure of it.

This is very similiar to how it was for me when hearing Again for the first time. I was a little thrown off, because it was so different. Didn't like it too much at first, but then after a couple of watches it became amazing, and it turned out to be my favourite OP of the entire series.

And sure enough, this Opening has already grown tremendously on me (that was a fast process lol). When playing the OP a second time around I found myself feeling that it was just SO right. Those initial seconds that didn't hit home at first were really perfect, I realized. It's grown on me really fast; from not liking it, to thinking it's actually pretty alright, to loving it. All in two viewings.

The second and fourth (and third, to some degree) Openings are really catchy tunes that you liked from the start, but that's all they've been. Catchy. The best ones have been the ones you were uncertain about.

Again is my favourite OP of the entire series. Closely followed by this. I'm in love with it. It's amazing. It does not disappoint. SID has made the best Ending for Brotherhood, and now the next best Opening.

(Sorry if my post is a bit incoherent, I'm feeling pretty scatterbrained at the moment.)

Now some comments about the content:

- I like that it's so dark most of the time. The grey, rainy weather really gives a solemn feel to it.
- Why the heck is there a naked Truthy Winry in there, being separated from Ed? Is there some meaning behind this, plot-wise, or is it just playing around with weird symbolism of emotions? Ed's fear of losing Winry?
- The flame/soul effect was cool. I swear, that first image of Ed must be the darkest thing I've ever seen in FMA.
- Izumi with Sig in the background really reminds me of the third opening of the original series. Nostalgia is never a bad thing. Makes the impact of this really being the end of FMA even bigger, in a way. This is is IT, folks.
- I love how Roy is falling down the dark spiral. Doesn't have to mean anything specific, but I think it's pretty symbolising of things to come, without being spoilery. Nice, BONES.
- It ends pretty good too, with the sun breaking through and making Ed squint, followed by him waking up with Winry next to him. And a nice little detail, as people have mentioned, is that we don't see his right arm there in the bed. I really think this might mean something. Makes the Opening end on a hopeful note.
ShadowCat17
awww mustang and then Hawkeye hugging Black Hayate in the rain looked so sad!!!

By the way, has anyone yet mentioned how badass this shot of the Armstrongs is?

No, but I sure as hell thought it tongue.gif
Winry Chi
Opening 5 'Rain'...was amazing, just amazing. Truth!Winry as symbolism, is neat. Foreshadowing? I would love to see how Arakawa would do so.. Perhaps Truth toys with Ed, by altering its shape with something he holds close, if that is to be foreshadowing? The Roy sequence was nicely done, even those who do not know of the meaning of it, are still safe from a spoiler I think. Winry's tear falling to rain was a beautiful touch, made the transition fluid rather than a normal pan-down. I do think she might be crying of remembering something good or of a thought of happiness? I honestly do not see her promise to Ed of not crying, unless they are tears of joy, being broken. Perhaps BONES just played with the concept of tears-to-rain.

The Ending.. was alright.. I think for a last or near last ending for the series BONES could have thrown in more movement into it rather than stills... but that's just my picking at it. The Hohenheim with hair down was alright, but thing is.. he normally wears his hair in a ponytail, even as Slave 23. Young!Homunculus from the newest Ch wears his hair down however.. maybe this is to show that the two are one, since Homunculus was in fact born from Hohenheim?
rzerox21xx

could this be foreshadowing. of Ed making peace with his past so he can move on to his future by rebuilding his house?

Perhaps Truth!Winry is the symbol of Ed losing a loved one, i.e what she really represents is his Mother...in the same way at the end what he has lost (his Mother) is replaced by his other symbol of love (Winry).

Ugh see I'm getting all deep in to it. As for the house, it might mean something too as the bedroom we see Ed and Winry in isn't hers from the Rockbell house.....or it could just be continuity fault.

True, but that's a manly tear of passion! Mustang, Armstrong, and Hohenheim have all cried at some point in the series and are no less manly for it.
Broken Chouchou
I think she might have been referring to that Wrath is, you know, Wrath, the harsh, evil, non-human homunculus who's only recurring emotion is rage, and who has a fancy for cutting up people with his swords in brutal ways. Not so much that it's about being manly or not, but rather that you don't expect him to show (or feel) feelings like that.

I don't think I've ever seen Wrath cry (or did he in last chapter? Can't remember, but i think not). Maybe those are tears of deep, trembling anger? Only option if they want to be canon about his character XP
