==============

Viewing raw episodes in Japan

* In Japan, the weekly airing of FMA series-2 starts Sunday, April 5, 5:00 PM (Japan time) on MBS/TBS TV networks.

* Also in Japan, starting Friday, April 10, 2009, you can watch the episode (in Japanese) on your computer through "TV shows-on-personal-computer, GYAO anime station" web site. Each Friday, 12:00 noon the showing will switch to the newest episode. For details, please check Gyao site - anime page and Gyao technical support page (Note: I checked, and the service is limited to within Japan only.)

On-line streaming of raw episode same time as airing in Japan

NOTE: Please be warned that the quality and reliability of simultaneous streaming of Japanese broadcasting of FMA-2 episode on Key-hole TV and TbAnts and MM have been sketchy, and you may or may not successfully get the streaming of the whole episode.

* In the U.S., and elsewhere where it's accessible on-line (accessibility may vary from country to country, please check your local situation,) you can watch streaming of the episode (in Japanese) on-line through Key-hole TV.
KeyHoleTV is part of a project by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs testing out P2P (peer to peer) technology. It's free and legal, and it includes TV shows on TBS, hence you can watch FMA episode also.
You need to download and install a file to enable your computer to watch Key-hole TV. Check details on Key-hole TV site (the site is in English.)

* In the U.S., and elsewhere where it's accessible on-line (accessibility may vary from country to country, please check your local situation): TvAnts is another program to watch the episodes on P2P (peer to peer) on-line. Check for TBS for episodes in Japanese, and TBS-TV for episodes with subs in Chinese.
(This info was posted by Linkdude20002001 here. Since I'm not familiar with TvAnts, please inquire Linkdude20002001 for further details.)

* In the U.S., and elsewhere where it's accessible on-line (accessibility may vary from country to country, please check your local situation): For those who are having trouble streaming with Kay-hole, mms://stream.gundam.eu/tbs uses your regular media software (VLC, Winamp, RealPlayer, etc.) to watch streaming of TBS TV shows (that includes FMA) with reported very good results.
(This info was posted by Gukumatz here. Since I'm not familiar with this application, please inquire Gukumatz for further details.)

Japanese people rarely sub anime, they just stick it online for someone else to work with.

stupid name person, learn to use torrents or IRC. That's your best bet for subs.
Flamez_Freak
i know whos is gonna sub this..but is it okay to write their names here...
asunder
these are the groups that have announced their intentions to sub the series:
ACG, Darksoul-Fansubs, Destiny & Yuurisan-Subs & Yibis, Elricest, gSS, AniYoshi, KyouNoSubs-Tomodachi, Ayako, Your-Mom, Himatsubushi, Taka Fansubs

i'm sure many more groups will come out of the woodworks to sub the new series.

As long as the series is unlicensed, I'll grab a decent fansub as they come out. (keyword being decent...there are a lot of bad groups subbing this :/ ) Then send it to bryantq to upload on this site.
Kasumisty
I think the easiest way to get them is Youtube. Poor quality, but you can expect the episodes to be uploaded maximum a day after airing.
Hagaren_4ever
Um... I don't wanna be a buzz-kill, but isn't watching the episodes online just a little bit.... illegal? Or no?
Popogeejo
Only if it's licensed.
Kasumisty
I agree with Popogeejo. Every show is legal to watch if it wasn't licensed in the countries a "watcher" lives in.

Also, as a side note, I think people from ANN forums are little butthurt. They think everything which concerns anime in internet is illegal : <

Well, they're not exactly wrong. It's illegal, but it's not a crime. It's not permitted by law, but there's no legislation that can put you through any kind of trouble for it.

But, in terms, it IS illegal, because even if the anime is not licensed in that country, rights should not be restricted by any means. If you own and created ANYTHING, the ownership should be protected worldwide. But that's kinda impossible to ensure.
And, since no one from Sony or Bones will come to your country and sue you for stealing their product (first, because it's not worth it; second because the law sue would be too complicated/long and could end up fruitless; and third, if the anime is not licensed in your country, you're actually doing a 'favor' for them, making the anime popular and, by so, increasing the chances of having the publishing rights for that country bought by some company) in practical means it's the same as being legal.

*ahem*
Before this gets escalated... Adding opinions on fansubbing situations in relation to the thread topic is appreciated, but please curve bad-mouthing of other forum sites on our board.

The topic of this thread is "where we can see the new FMA series," and to which Asunder has already responded, and basically, we have to wait for the airing of the series and then see if any decent fansubs would surface. I'm aware of the some of the fansubbing issues, and I have gone through lengthy discussions on them elsewhere also, but I would rather not to see this thread veering a course into a full blown discussion on the current fansubbing issues, or bad-mouthing of some of the fansubbers. smile.gif
Edward Cardinal Elric
While there is certainly something to be said regarding the observation of whether or not foreign parties often bother with the chore of exerting their intellectual property rights in the United States at the current point in time, what is obvious is that copyrights do indeed extend across national boundaries in principle. The simple fact that a creative work is brought into being outside of the jurisdictional precincts of the United States does not imply that it is merely protected from copyright infringement within its domestic market. Both the United States and Japan, in addition to the majority of the rest of the industrialized world, have signed the Berne Convention and the Universal Copyright Convention treaties. As such, copyright holders in either country enjoy the multilateral protection of their creations among all party nations. Given the intense effect that globalization and the internet revolution have had on the world, multinational collaboration such as this is really quite expected.

Given the above, I think that there are a few additional facts that one must keep in mind while examining copyright law. First, one does not necessarily need to "apply" or "resister" for copyright protection as it applies directly to the owner of any original creative work that is fixed in a tangible medium. Copyright protections extend to the regulation of derivative works that borrow substantially from an original piece. Case law in the United States has determined that the level of borrowing necessary to prove infringement is fairly broad in scope (see Bright Tunes Music v. Harrisongs Music for an illustrative example and 17 U.S.C. § 101 for the technical definition). In all reality, I believe that it is clear from the case law that exists on the topic that, in the specific case of anime productions, most fan-produced works of visual and literary art would qualify as infringing in the United States (that is not to say that I believe that this should be the case). What is even more evident, however, is that the copyright owner does not need to reside in the country where the infringement occurs in order to assert his or her intellectual property rights. Anime viewers have become accustomed to having free reign over fansubs until receiving cease and desist letters from a U.S. based licensee, but this process in no way indicates the true nature of the regulations that underlie the system as a whole. While it may be too costly for a Japanese company to pursue a copyright infringement lawsuit in the United States, this prohibition would obviously not apply to a domestic firm. A U.S. based licensee can easily bring a complaint to a U.S. court seeking remedy as the holder of domestic distribution rights, yet it is still important to note that absent a license agreement, the original content owner is free to bring such a case on his or her own terms.

Moral of the story
: Just hold your horses for a little bit and wait to import the region two DVDs from Japan when they are finally released. Perhaps supplement this plan with some strategic and timely YouTube searching. Unfortunately, good things take time.
Turdaewen
Edward Cardinal Elric you're absolutely right.

But, also, for me, it depends on other things. For example: I live in Brazil. Most the anime here NEVER get domestic licensees, aside from the real popular ones. And, even when the rights are bought, most of the time it takes more than 5 years to happen. In my case, I could buy the original from Japan, but most people don't speak English fluently enough to understand a anime subbed in that language. It's is still illegal, of course, but, in this case, they have very few other options.
What is usually done here is that fansubs don't take any sort of profit from subbing an unlicensed anime. It doesn't make it 'more legal', but at least it makes more difficult to make grounds for any legal process. At the same time, most fansubs also encourage otakus to buy the licensed animes as soon as they reach the stores, to show brazilian companies that there's a substantial market for anime here.

That also depends a lot on how domestic laws understand copyrights and that differs from country to country.

And, either way, Tombow is right. This is not the place to discuss further where this situation stands.
Legally speaking, it's exactly as Edward Cardinal Elric said and ANN would not be wise to defend otherwise, even if they wanted to. But that also doesn't mean there aren't other sides to the matter.

You'll be waiting a loong time to watch them on Funi's site. They'll only put the eppies on their site when they dub it (and that's if they DO put the eppies on their site). Unless they do what Viz is doing for Naruto Shippuden, and sub the new eppies directly from Japan and put them on Hulu.com.

I know this is gonna sound wrong, but I could care less if it's illegal to watch it online. I can't wait to watch the new season and once a DVD is released here in Canada I'll buy it!! (Yes, I'm one of those who actually buys the DVD's and doesn't just download the torrents)
With or without subs it doesn't matter, I think, if you've read the manga it should be pretty self explanatory
(fervent Romi Paku fan xD speaking)
Little Washu
FUNi will usually put the first 3-5 DUBBED episodes up. Never subbed.

Asunder mentioned Taka-Fansubs as being a possible subber. They took over Naruto Shippuden after Dattebayo!-Fansubs bailed. From what I can tell, their subs are very good in translation and quality. Though, they usually release once or twice a week, it is worth the wait. Also, theirs are available as normal downloads (.wmv, .avi, ect) or as a torrent, which ever you prefer I guess. I know sites such as Saiyan Island have a topic with a download link to each episode, if Paladin were to give us permission, we could do that.

Also, didn't someone say that someone from FUNi said that once they grab it, DVDs will be released 9 months after? Not a very long wait.

In any case, I'll be seeing Vic Mignogna twice this year (Tora-con, Anime North) so I'll try to milk him for any info on it if I get the chance to talk with him.
Popogeejo
People are still releasing in .wmv?
Admittedly I know little about such things but I thought .avi or .mkv were the standard these days.

QUOTE

I think Eccentric Uncle Asunder said he's either cool with us linking to torrents so long as it remains unlicensed or that he would be putting links on the front page.
Little Washu
Well, for some people, .avi doesn't work in Windows Media Player, so they'd need a .wmv file. (for most though, .avi works on WMP. I know .mkv is for another system in it's own right. Though .rmvb is another, I haven't the slightest what that's for)

Ah, I see. So we'll have a section for it then I guess.

With the new series, I assume we might have a forum revamp. Then all that could be put in.
Lunneth elric

asunder
Lemme take a moment in the mornin' to clear up any misconceptions:
-Taka is a pretty awful fansub group.

-Some raws on japanese p2p networks are still released in wmv9 format...Also the raw webcast of hetalia is in a .wmv/.asf format.
But fansub groups typically use xvid encoding in a .AVI container or a H.264 encoding in a .mkv container. (Some groups do use h.264 in a .mp4 container but the link below should help people play that.)

- People watch .wmv because they haven't loaded the proper codecs+filters to be able to watch h264 or xvid encoded files.

- .rmvb is used exclusively by the chinese fansubbing community

- .mkv is *not* for another system...In fact it's best supported under Windows

- h264 in mkv vs xvid in avi is another debate entirely
short version: People with older computers or those who want to convert their files to play on their portable devices prefer xvid/avi while people who want the best quality will get the h264 in a .mkv option

- To play mkv files or .avi files: Uninstall other codec packages (klite etc) then get the CCCP from http://www.cccp-project.net/ . Install it and your computer should be set to handle any english fansubbed anime you download.
Little Washu
^Really? Taka had seemed good to me. I assume there's a group that would sub anime of that..."genre", per say? (Maybe whomever subbed Soul Eater)

As for .mkv, I had to download a whole other system. The symbol was a traffic cone >.>

At any rate, I'm sure we'll find something <3

Depends if you want subtitles or not.
You could probably get the raw within half an hour of it airing.

I do want subtitles, because I can't speak Japanese.
I really want to learn though. >.<
FMAobsessed
I heard that the funimation website will be showing the first episode subbed on their website on April 10. For anyone who isn't from the United States, funimation is the company that licensed the first FMA anime series. But I think that most people know that.
Mistress of Misery
^April 9th, actually. It's nice to know that FMA is being shown in so many places around the world. For faster releases, though, I'll stick with fansubs. x3

Will anybody be able to post the raw here then (or perhaps even the fan-subbed one) or do we have to go on a hunt for it ourselves?
Kaosugoji
The problem with fansubs is that they can be sketchy. In an exposition heavy series like FMA (any version really) a mistranslation could provoke headsplitting amounts of confusion (which was repeatedly the case with the first show). Of course, being the impatient guy I am, I'll likely be watching a fansub first, but I'm a tad worried. Oh well, at least we have Funimation doing a guaranteed quality translation.

Yeah for sure and I'm all about watching the Funimation one on the 9th. <.< I'm just an impatient little fangirl who wants to watch it now. xD Though I understand what you mean about watching the fan-subbed one. I guess that is a bit worrying, but it'll still be worth it. I can't wait to see this.
