So, as some of you may know there's a man in the US who has been arrested for owning "obscene" manga and he faces 20 years in prison and may have to register as a sex offender if found guilty.

Now it seems any decent lawyer wil make a case of fre speech and this will be done but then again this is Iowa so it's all to play for.

So...

Dear American manga fans,
Enjoy going to prison for owning any manga that contains an image of a sexualised under aged chick.

Bye bye.
lunneth
what in the name of all that is magical. its at times like this that i really wish i hadn't picked up negima. seriously though i honestly don't think that its worth 20 years in prison. big whoop i mean come on. i know this is fan service but thats just stupid.
xXdark_angel_nekoXx
and aslo when is a against the law for someone that is in to manga.... for them to be allowed to
QUOTE
possessing manga to read in the privacy of his own home
. when was this stated as a law???? wow what is this world coming to???

It wasn't fanservice that got him in trouble. Odds are what he had some lolicon. While I say drawings are drawings and it's not that big of a deal it's still not going to wash well with most people.
Schmitz_7
Laws are so stupid nowdays. Where was it.. east bum Funk... they had nothign better to do so they found this.

Honestly... people collect and read these things EVERYWHERE. But this happens why? Because my man at the post office had a bad day. (Since when the hell did the post office have agents btw)

Seem to me like if every single anime/ manga fan wrote a pettition about this.... it would end abruptly.

they did??? where did this happen???
lunneth
wow. i suddenly posted and this topic got like 5 others. any way yeah i think it might happen if people signed a pettion. well i guess this is because people feel insecure about others but you've got to take the words of people like this seriously. c'mon. just cause one guy has a book of strange pictures, it dosent mean thats what he wants to do

Learn to read. He said "if" and he's wrong. If the police are investigating someone for suspected illegal activities then they don't care how people sign a petition. That's why Michael Jackson had his day in court instead of just being let out because his fans signed a piece of paper.
Dickens
The worlds gone a little bit mad.

And surely, if the government has a problem with this manga, it would be more productive to go to do the artist?
Popogeejo
It's not manga that's the problem, it's depicting minors in sexual situation.
Prosecution says: Even if it's a drawing it's still kiddie porn
Defence says: It's just drawings and no one is being hurt.
Schmitz_7
I understand what your saying.

It just unfair that because someone collects alot of it he gets arested because there more trail as opposed to the upcoming manga fan whos 13 and buys the same manga.

According to the proc, that means this 13 year old child is doing somethign illegal as well.

Not only that but if the federal government ha a problem with it im sure those types of manga would be controlled by now.

Its just the people in west bumf*!@ not having anythign better to do.
Dickens
Thats what i dont get, if they've got such an issue with the manga, why isnt it controlled. i doubt the man who bought the issue was awae he was doing anything illegal.
Popogeejo
Again, I repeat, it's not all manga, just certain porn manga.
Also, manga is controlled to a degree. Note that most have age rating given on the back.

Why? Manga hasn't been that prominent until recent years and I strongly doubt most politicians are even aware there is such a thing as hentai, let alone lolicon.
That's what this whole case is about, to determine whether such content is illegal or not.
Dickens
Should that not have been determined before some bloke was arrested?

well moe has been called pedophiliac by some americans. its just anoying. i think to be honest that these people really need to listen to what they're doing. and before you say anything popo i gotta say this is my last word on how stupid these people have been. its just manga. a comic. nothing more. fantasy. plus people with an interest in fanservice (i have learnt from experience) usually look at it as they have nothing better to do. if this man is doing anything wrong in the future then sure.lock him up but suspecting a man of sex offension and a sentence of 20 years is just to harsh in my eyes. porn or not. i'm sure the american society is as good as the society we have here in england.
Schmitz_7
If hes a pedophile... then alot of us are too. I just dont agree with the situation. I hope they charge him with nothing... or i wish some bible black .... onto the stupid "agents" .

I get where there coming from. REAL kiddie porn is a huge problem as well as underground stuff.

People do get "kidknapped" out of whatever fetishes they have and do get killed. Some of its sold.

Now i see where there coming from. If Participating in child porn is illegal and watching and distributing it is illegal they see drawings of those things being depicted just as bad.

Why?

Because They dont know that this man is just a collector or not. We dont know what was on those computers of his. Really were all defending the guy because we collect to.

For all we know he could be a distributor himself.

Time shall see.
lunneth
good point.
xXdark_angel_nekoXx
ya that is true.. so is there is any more news about this..... cause this is really intresting.

Are you really this stupid?

No. No they are not. They are banning cartoons/comics that depict kids in sexual acts.
Not all manga does this unless I've really missed the boat on something.

This is part of of what they are trying to ban;

Dickens
It is interesting.

Worth keeping an eye on. Personally, I think it would pretty impossible to enforce. Sure, you could make it so British publishers couldnt publish lolicon images, but then what about imports? Going to check every manga coming in from overseas are they?

I knew a guy back in Germany who got hit up with UCMJ (military law) for posession of "questionable" manga. Loss of 2 grades in rank (busted down to private), forfeiture of pay, 14 days extra duty, a stiff fine, and flagged for several months.

wow that is harsh.
Metastasis
Sounds harsh, but that's really the same punishment for any infraction of the UCMJ that gets high enough in your leadership's eyes. Being late, forgetting a mission-vital piece of equipment, failing to stand at the correct position to someone's rank while being addressed by them, denying a direct order, improper uniform. Anything can be punished with an Article 15 (non-judicial punishment). Personally, I would have taken a court-martial for something like that.
Hagaren_4ever
Being a pervert shouldn't be against the law. It's immoral, but it shouldn't be against the law. I think these people shouldn't throw him in prison unless he actually started abusing people. If they think it's that immoral, just let him read the stuff, and then just let him go to hell later.
