Thank you so much! I love Al and this picture is so sweet!

@Blysse LOL. Envy's chibi entrance was one of the best scenes! Winry getting drunk was just as hilarious XD

Hopefully, they'll make another Chibi OAV for the end of the 2nd series too.

Oh, Lord... yes, the drunk Winry was good, too. xD "Who-*hic*-is she to you?"
lunneth
yeah can i just say that the HP translations were strict to the original english so such words like mom were still mum. at least thats what J.K. said.
Yikie
I don't really care, as long as the story is good (read: as long as the story follows the manga).

But it will be good and refreshing to see a new art style to let people have the feeling they're watching a complete new series.
susie
I like the old anime's style! That's not to say I'd be mad if they changed it. I want it to look good. Has anyone ever played Tales of Symphonia? The artwork in it is good, I think it'd be nice if FMA's was like that! As long as it isn't like Yu-Gi-Oh... oh god, that was terrible.
Nutters
Hmm. It looks to me that just by viewing the promos and whatnot, the art style is somewhat different. I mean... The eyes. And... I don't know. It looks like they're keeping the feel of the original art, but adding a more manga twist to it? If that made any sense. xD If it were my choice, I'd want them to stick to Arikawa's style. But then again, who wouldn't? xP (For some reason, the anime Winry always looked...different than the manga Winry. In a weird way. o_O Hmm, maybe it's just me. xD)

Oh well. I'm sure that whatever they decide to do will be great. I mean, following the original manga story line is enough for me. I'm just generally excited to see what they do with it. C:
fullmetalxfire
The art syle change was dissapointing at first, but from what I've seen Edward still looks fine, and it doesn't look horribly different. As long as its a complete change, I'm okay with it.

I'm just happy that there is a new season, the art style change is a small price to pay.
Hagaren_4ever
I don't really understand why they would change the art style. I thought it was the same people making it as last time..... but even though I don't understand why I don't really mind it. I'm open to change, I mean, I'm just glad they're doing a new series at all.

QUOTE

Because it's been 8 years since they did it and have evolved their style since then.
The art changes so far seem minimal though, just adjusting slightly to be closer to the the manga. The direction (where the "camera" is and such) has really changed though. BONEs can do dynamic stuff far better now.
Their colouring/shading/lighting/backgrounds are also rather different since the first series.
Little Washu
The only reason I don't like it because Riza seems to have a receding hairline and Roy's face is faaaaaat.

I totally agree! That and the boots seem to be bigger for some reason. Bigger toes or something, I dunno. It's weird, but, whatever. I'll get used to it.

Umm, before this turns into a full-blown personal chat laugh.gif ... guys, please do not use regular discussion threads for off-topic personal chat. Use PM for personal conversation, please. biggrin.gif

In general, on our board we recommend using PM for these off-topic personal conversations. Or, if you are making a post with some on-topic content, then you CAN add these small off-topic comments to your normal on-topic post, marked as OT, as an addition to your on-topic content on the same post, if you'd like.
Otherwise, in general, unless on some designated chat threads, if you're posting on regular discussion threads and if what you have is ONLY the off-topic personal content, then please do not make that as a post, and instead use your PM.
Thank you!! smile.gif

Does anyone think that Winry's new design is lacking? Or in other words, sucks?
My friend is a big Winry fan and she is upset that Winry looks "horrid" as she put it, I'm indifferent about her looks.
Sure they could've done better but I'm not gonna roll over and die because of it, I'm just not a picky person.
I want to tell her that she should wait and see when the anime airs and that she's blowing it way out of proportion but she's rather touchy about having that said to her.....and she thinks waiting is useless since the design is set and there's no way it'll change, she doesn't even want to watch it because of that.

So I want to know if anyone else shares her feelings or if it's just her.

Seriously, though. I think that some people are just afraid of change, and I can relate to that. Who can't say that they were caught off guard when they saw the first FMA teaser, and Roy looked like a sumo? It's just a change in style. Adjust. I suggest telling your friend to look forward to the story that they're going to be portraying, rather than how the characters in that story may appear to her. (You may want to use your own words for that one. XD)

She's not afraid of change and it's not that she's one of those hardcore crazy fans of the first anime, on the contrary, she's a hardcore crazy fan of the manga. She was fine with how everything looked for the new anime but as soon as she saw Winry she got turned off.
I told her that she should watch it, and that it might not be as bad as she thinks but she's not sure if she will...she said that all she wants is that they do Winry some justice. sleep.gif

I want to say more than that to her but it seems that I only make the situation worse everytime I open my mouth. sad.gif

If she don't want to watch, nobody will force her to do it. But it is sad. Especially there's nothing wrong with Winry...

I agree ^-^.
Winry looks absolutely adorable! (and the new artwork is so beautiful. ^0^)
@nekogirl L: Hopefully after she's watched the first episode she'll change her mind. ^-^ If not...it'll be a shame ><
Hagane no Baka
I don't really mind if the animation is different as long as the character aren't utterly deformalised^^ The thing I was upset more about at first was the different VA for Mustang, Riza, Scar, etc but then I got over that. It's the story that counts for me!
Hagaren_4ever
I'm just looking forward to seeing certain things animated. I am definitely looking forward to one of the most anticipated scene's of Fullmetal Alchemist 2. The scene where Winry tries to shoot Scar. Gonna be epic, y'all.
Kale Mustang
I really like the new style that BONES is using for this series, particularly the coloring. Since this season is more in tune with the manga, I'm glad that the characters look more like their manga counterparts rather than from the previous season.

The style being used is much more suited to the more fast-paced battles of the manga and I love how clean and fluid the battles were in the first episode.

Plus, although the old season holds up really well, this season seems to be more optimized for the HD experience.
Blood_Rose22
ED - Did you guys notice that Edwards hair was "Blonder"? I mean, I really liked the old style, but his hair looked more yellow than actual blond. I really like this small change in color.

ROY - I really liked the changes in Roy. The overall design just seemed.... Smoother. And younger.

ARMSTRONG - This is the one change in design that I really didn't like. He looked really scary. Oh well.

RIZA - She looked... Less serious, and more like a chibi. Not saying I have a problem with it, it was just an observation. I actually liked it.

WINRY - Her design wasn't all that different from what I saw, just smoother, like the art as a whole.

HAVOC - I know that he didn't really show up, but in one of the pictures they had posted on the FUNimation website, his hair was all ONE color, like in the manga! It made me happy, because ever since I found out that in the manga his hair was all one color, and they made his hair two colors in the anime, I've been... Frustrated. But well, problem solved!

LUST - I adored her. She was even more sultry than before, if possible.

BUT my favorite change is Ed, hands down. I like staring at him even more, now. I didn't think it possible.

Roy seems to me like in the manga. He has his eyes wider that in the first series

To me, her eyes seem HUGE LIKE WHOAH, which makes her adorable most of the time.

Also, did anyone else notice, umm, noses? Like Hughes`, it looks pretty big sometimes. laugh.gif
Kyelinn
Well, the art is more closer to Arakawa's than the first anime's art style. She draws the noses on her characters a little larger than what you're used to from the first anime. I really love the art style being used for this series! I love how blond Edward's hair is in this series as well, it's not as dark and golden as it was in the original and I like that. biggrin.gif I see a little difference in Winry. She looks closer to her manga counterpart than she does in the first FMA. I was just watching the 2nd episode again and studying her eyes. I think they look more manga-ish. I actually think she looks a lot cuter in this series. Anyway, I LOVE this new art style! I prefer the manga drawings of the first FMA, so I like the fact that they're keeping this series' art style closer to the manga than the first FMA.

That`s true, I guess I just wasn`t prepared to see it animated haha. I definately like that aspect about her work though, it gives the characters more authenticity.
Kyelinn
I totally agree with you there! I absolutely love Arakawa's style when it comes to her drawings. I mean there are a few times where you look at it and go, oh dear...the nose is just a tad too big there, but it still looks good! ^^; I think they're more or less just trying to stick with her style since this anime is based on her original story now. I love it!
Alchema
I prefer the original art style of the first anime but that's probably because that is what I am used to since I have seen all 51 of the episodes...I was quite surprised to find out that a second series was being made...although why they would want to make a second series after they already have one COMPLETE series plus a movie to cap it off is beyond me....its not that I don't like the new series (it looks stunning) its just that I'm confused.
Kyelinn
lol It's because it's an anime series based off of the original manga story. The story that began BEFORE the first anime, the true Fullmetal Alchemist story. You should pick up the manga and read it. ^_~ It's a much better story than the first FMA, IMO.

Because the older anime and the manga are two completely different stories. I mean, in order to read the manga, you pretty much have to forget everything you know about the anime, and vice-versa. I really like them both, like, they're both kick-arse, but I personally prefer the manga... A lot darker, and more twisted. So now they're making a new anime to follow the origional plot, the way Arakawa intended.

But uhh, I heard that the new anime was only gonna be 13 episodes.... I hope it isn't true! Q_Q

Seriously, though, you should READ THE MANGA! You can't call yourself a true FMA fan until you've read the manga. -nodnod- You can buy them, check out your local library, OR read them on onemanga.com

Dang, I hope that wasn't a violation of the forum rules O_o Tell me if I have, and I'll change it if I can.
Tombow
Now that I've actually watched two episodes with the new art style, I say I like the new art style. It's very manga FMA. I also read the interview by the art director of the new FMA series, and how he took care to honor Arakawa-sensei's maga art style, and took character features and such from FMA manga, then took care to duplicate them in the new anime series: (The interview is under translation process by me, and I will post it as soon as completed. ^^) And, I think I can see that in Roy's face, and some other characters. Being a huge fan of Arakawa-sensei's art style, I'm happy to see that they're honoring her art style in the new series. smile.gif

@Blood_Rose22 - Welcome to our board!! biggrin.gif Well, actually, let me add that our board has OWN FMA manga viewer, with chapters that are scanlated in English, with wonderful scanlation by ZOMGFTA (with very ACCURATE translations that's crafted with the great care, IMO, by csakuras, I might add) and by other groups. Currently, it's including up to chapter 72, though we do have later chapter scanlations ready to be added, and hopefully those can be added soon. ^^

Ummm... As your opinion, I take it that's how you see it.. right? ^^ However, the fact is, we have a huge population of members on this board who have never read FMA manga, and nonetheless many of them are HUGE FMA fans, in my view. And, of course I value their posts and opinions on our board, as well as I value posts and views and opinions by those who read FMA manga.
I love both FMA manga and the first FMA anime, and now new FMA anime series, and IMO, there is no True Fan distinction given solely to any particular group of fans exclusively, on our board. In my mind, ALL OF THEM are FMA fans. smile.gif

Mercy_Alchemist94
I like the new style, at the same time I don't.
It looks nice until you get a close up to the characters. It looks too bright for the usual FMA style. And the soft lines of Ed's hair for me really throws off his character design. Also, the little fangs on Al's helmet seems thiner and look a bit odd.
But these changes aren't big enough for me to hate it.

Should be 51+, considering that they will follow the manga wink.gif and with a confirmation from Bones themselves that they still don't have a total number of episodes as yet.
Vagrant
I think Brotherhood's art is possibly it's best feature so far. It's a fine looking anime.
FailToImpress
^That's what I think too.
I suppose the animation has come a long way since the first series was shown.
Edamame
I must say that I am realling growing to love the animation style; it is wonderful to see the artistic directors for the series staying so close to the Hiromu Arakawa´s art style for the manga. I am pleased with the decision of the artistic directors to create Edward, Hoenheim, and young Alphonse´s character design with the thick black outline for their hair; I believe that this artisitc choice sets these characters apart from everybody else and singles them out as being someone "special." For the first four episodes, the animation has been consistently up to par with my expectations. I love the fluid animation in the battle scenes, and the backgrounds for the city-scapes are done very well in my opinion. I don´t know if it is just me, but the new designs really give the characters a younger and somewhat sofer look.
Akrinis
I've noticed that the new anime is very different to the first anime. I'm not referring to the storyline, because I'm aware that the producers have decided to follow the manga's storyline closely in this series, but it appears to me that the new series is lacking...

The new anime's graphics seem very sketchy to me and the slightly monotonal. Being a huge fan of the first anime, I loved the art style and the music blended in nicely together. I'm very disappointed.
FullMetalFist
Ya I know what you mean, I am not all that fond of the art as in the old series. It does seem it is just little lower down the path of quality. It still looks good, just not as good as the first series.
slc2
Must..rant..

There are things I like and things I don't these are my major gripes..

The background painting is so rough and sketchy, you could argue it's more impressionistic because of a stylistic choice but they are just painted faster, less detailed, CHEAPER. They look photoshopped with this same rough crappy fake brush texture in places, I can't stand the look of the buildings, the outlines look so blatantly like weird outline filters are over them (so far the episode in Lior looks the worst, when Rose and Al are on the balcony looking over the city...it does not even look in correct perspective and the weird filter is much prevalent - also when Rose is stood by the railings..just really awful looking railings)

The animation quality has gone downhill, obviously the opening sequence looks good, but everything else..ugh. In episode 7 when Ross and Brosh are stood at some distance from us, they have not bothered to draw their faces...it is very noticable and jarring...there is a lot of 'off-model' animation with Al's face, it just changes proportion often.
The line quality around the characters is much thinner and mostly of the same thickness except a few places (last series had nicer more descriptive line quality)

The colours and lighting are sometimes ..... In the first series in Lior, Outside in the sun, Ed's coat is vibrant red and bright, because it's sunny and Lior is hot. In this series, his coat is a more muted depressing red nearly all the time, even in the desert o_0

I agree about the inconsistent animation quality, and I hope it will somehow improve as the series progresses. But... about Lior... umm, in the first series of anime it's a desert town, but in manga it's NOT depicted as a desert town, is it? unsure.gif

Oh. I might be mistaken about that then, sorry

Ahh I thought of more to rant about.

Background animation. There is none. It's like Central is populated only by the main characters. When Ed and Scar are fighting there are some very very vague stills of pedestrians with umbrella's in the background, and they looked very strange to me. You know how in the manga when Ed and Al are sat around talking, before the soldier runs up and tell's them Scar is on the loose, there are people walking around. The reason there are none in the episode is because it's easier to just not animate them, or the soldier, or to get someone to voice the soldier, these things are removed for time and money. In the old series it felt more like they were adding details, because they had a bigger budget I suppose. When they do have crowds, the crowds are mostly just still images o_0

I have a bad feeling the quality will stay the same throughout the series, and the two chapters per episode
format will remain, just because it's cheaper for them to do it that way. Unfortunately.
kkg22104
I just finished watching the newest episode, and I thought the fight scenes were animated pretty well. Towards the end Maria's face and hair kept changing, or maybe that was just me...Anyway, sometimes the art is a little inconsistent but I still like it because it looks so similar to the manga. I love the scenes that they take straight from a manga panel.

This does happen from time to time in this series. But guess what it happened in the first series as well. The animation was not much better in the first series. Maybe at certain instances like Greed VS Ed. But overall they cut corners with the first series too. And usually a lot of these types of things are fixed in DVD releases.
