Title: Chapter 88 - Familial Love

Page 11:
Ed: Al.
Al!
Wake up!

ALPHONSE!

Al: H...huh?

Dad?
Hohenheim: Hello.

Page 12:
Al: Where am I...
Small bubble: More buckets!
Hohenheim: A slum outside of Central called "Kanama."
Small text: Gather all the stuff!
Pitch in, men!
Al: How did I get here...

Oh!
Dad!
Selim Bradley's a homunculus!

Hohenheim: I know. This "Gorius" fellow told me all about it.
Darius: That's DARIUS.

Al: God damnit...
He was inside me, controlling my soul...I feel sick.

Hohenheim: They're not unlike partial copies of a copy of me...
Perhaps they're able to control your by your blood emblem so easily because you're of my blood.

Darius: Oh-
Huu: Ah ha...there they are.

Page 13:
Al: Mr. Huu!
Huu: We will talk later.
He needs first aid.

Darius: You ok?
Heinkel: Oww.

Huu: You are Edward's father, yes?
Hohenheim: And you...you're Xingese, yes?

Huu: I am.
Hohenheim: Yours is a fine nation.
Why, once I-

Heinkel: This isn't the time to swap stories!
What do we do about that shadow demon thing?!
Hohenheim: Shadow...?

The homunculus "Pride!"
Huu: Correct.
He ate that Glutto-creature and we cannot hold him off much longer.

Page 14:
Al: It's my fault...
Everyone's in danger because I let Pride get the drop on me...

Huu: The fire has made too much light, and I'm out of flash bangs.
We can no longer use our original strategy.

Darius: This is serious.
If this goes on much longer those civilians will get wrapped up in this, too.

Page 15:
Al: Dad...
You're a master Alchemist, aren't you?

Hohenheim: ...Yep.
Second to none.

Al: I've got an idea that requires your skill.

Page 16:
Selim: Aah...
Now I've got a MUCH bigger field of view...

How many more lives do you have left, Greed?

Oh ho...Hiding in natural shadows will do you no good.
I can smell you now.

Bubble: Sniff sniff

Selim: Ah.
Finally stepping into the fray?

Page 17:
Selim: Hohenheim?!

Hohenheim: A hero always waits until the last minute to save the day.
Right?

Selim: "A hero?" Do you plan on trying to defeat me?
Save your effort.

Hohenheim: Oh, I don't intend to fight you.
You're much too frightening.

Page 18:
Selim: What's he trying to pull?
Does he have some sort of plan?

Attempting to harm me with flashbangs again?

Hohenheim: Goooood...
He's focusing on me and bringing all his shadows back to the main body.
They're almost there...

Page 19:
Selim: He's attacking...?

Page 20:
Selim: ...Sneaking up while I was focused on Hohenheim?
What a pedestrian strategy.

Whoops,
I don't want to spread myself too thin and get hit with a flashbang again, do I?

Page 21:
Selim: Well, I finally have my hostage back.
Your kid's got a lot of learning to do.

Hohenheim: Don't EVER mock my son.

Page 22: [HOLY CRAP]

Page 23:
Selim: Wh-

Page 24:
Greed: They're huge!
Ed: And fast!

Selim: H-

HOHENHEIIIIIM!

Page 25: [DUDE]

Page 26:
Darius: Holy smokes! You're amazing!
Hohenheim: That was...kinda scary.

Selim: Complete darkness...
Damn you, Hohenheim...

Al: Hahaha!
All according to plan!

Now you can't use your powers.
Selim: Is that your voice, Alphonse Elric?
He trapped you, too?

Page 27:
Selim: I hardly think you should be laughing.
The moment you try to escape, I'll send my shadow out through the crack, and-

Al: I never INTENDED to try to escape.

Let's see which one of us is more patient, Selim...
Excuse me - "Pride."

My body doesn't require food, water, or even air.
You and I are going to remain here until the "Promised Day" passes us by.

Page 28:
Heinkel: Daaaamn...
Greed: How's Heinkel?
Huu: We've dressed his wounds.

Greed: And you're all right?
Huu: I am unhurt, mast-

Wait, you're Greed again!
Yeah, I'm fine, boy!
Greed: How about you, toots?

Ed: Are you NUTS?!

Page 29:
Ed: What the hell is this,
Hohenheim?!

You trapped Al in there, too!
What were you thinking?!

Hohenheim: It was Al's idea.
Ed: Wh-

Hohenheim: Defeating Pride in his current state presents far too much risk.
We'll almost certainly drag innocent civilians into the fight.
So instead of beating him, we're holding him captive.

This buys us time to come up with a strategy.
Ed: Then why didn't you ask me before you-

Hohenheim: Al said, "Don't tell brother...he'll never let us do it."

Page 30:
Hohenheim: We needed him to focus all his shadows onto one central point.
Al volunteered himself - he said he was the "most suited" to handle the job.

He, in his own way, figured out how to ensure ALL of us remained alive.

Now, let's put out this forest fire,
before Al gets roasted.

Ed: f*!@...

Darius: Hm?
What the-

Page 31:
Darius: Where' Greed?

Greed: Lust is dead.
Envy's gone.
So is Gluttony!

Wrath is at the Eastern Training grounds.
Pride's trapped!

The only ones left in Central are Father and Sloth!

Page 32:
Lin: Greed!
What the hell are you thinking?!
Greed: Ghahaha!

What'd I tell you?

I'm gonna TAKE OVER THE WORLD!

Page 33:
Al: Trying to drill a hole?
Don't bother.
I doubt my dad would build this structure so that a child could break it down.

Admit it, you lost.

Page 34:
Selim: I tripped...
over your head.

Al: Is he REALLY that horrifying homunculus?
Without his powers, he really does seem like a child.

Selim: Are you laughing at me?
Al: Huh?!
Heeeh...

I, uh...
was just noticing how you really could pass for a normal child if you weren't a homunculus.

You've tricked Mrs. Bradley so easily...
Wait, is she in on it all?!
Selim: No. She's a normal human...she knows nothing.

Al: So you ARE deceiving her!
Laughing at her from the shadows!
That kind, gentle woman-

Page 35:
Selim: You're right.
"It" is known as a "good mother" to the everyday world.

Once, I was nearly run over by a car, and she jumped in front to protect me.

If I wanted, I could've moved at any time...
but her desperate attempts to save me left me utterly bewildered.

Though I have a father, there has never been anything I could refer to as a "mother." Thus, I was intrigued.

Page 36:
Selim: "Is this what it's like to have a mother...?

Though we were only pretending to be a family, I am fond of that creature.
That is the truth.

Al: Ack! Don't be fooled, don't be fooled!
Uhh...hunh....

So, you, uh...need us as "Sacrifices," right?
Uhhhh...

Page 37:
Al: If we'd decided to sneak off and hide in another country, all your efforts would've been for nothing.
Kind of a poor strategy, don't you think?

Selim: But you remained.

With no regard for your own safety, you returned to Central to fight.

Because you are humans.

Page 38:
Selim: We have absolute faith in the unshakable determination of the human heart.
The humans with the most exceptional drive and will are who we chose for our sacrifices.

Al: ...I can't tell if I'm being complimented or insulted.

Page 39:
Bums: Nh?
Ah-

It's that Ishvalan dude!
I thought the army gotcha.

Scar: We're searching for a slum called "Kanama."
Bum1: Ah, you'll have a hell of a time lookin'.
Bum2: It's outside of town, to the south.
Bum3: Somewhere in the woods.

Bum1: Huh? Where's the kid?
The girl with the black and white cat?
Marcoh: Huh?

Bum1: She was here just a little while ago.
Scar: WHAT?!

Page 40:
Zanpano: She's not going home?
Jerun: What's gotten into her?

Marcoh: We need all the information we can get. Did you hear anything else?

Bum1: Hrmm...
Bum2: Oh!

Bradley bit the dust on the way home from the East.
Didja know that?
Chimeras: WHAAAAt?!

Marcoh: We had no idea!
Bum1: Huh? But the culprits were Ishvalan.
Scar: We had no idea.
Bum2: We were sure it was you...
Bum3: Yep.

Bum3: Anyways,
a bunch of Ishvalans have come through on the way to Central for a few days now.
Bum2: All the rumors have it that they're terrorists.
Scar: I'm aware many Ishvalans have come this way, but not for that.

Page 41:
Scar: They're my dear kinsmen, and they're trying to change the country
though means other than terrorism.

Kimblee: Oh, dear me.
I just got this suit cleaned, too.

Page 42:
Kimblee: Then again, I need to stay passionate about my work.
It's almost time to carry out my REAL task.

Text: The Crimson Alchemist returns to the fight!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum, but first thing first : OMG !!! Daddy hohenheim isn't happy. lol, he is soo cool in that chapter. He's really Ed's father XD

Thanks you HisshouBuraiKen for the translation, it was fast ! and you too Ropespinner for the RAW, those were awesome !!

Al is marvellous "Let's see which one of us is more patient, Selim...", bloody brillant !!! Without Pride on his side, father's gonna be a little alone don't you think ? Against Hohenheim, Ed, team Scar, Mustang and Greed....but we never know what Arakawa is thinking, so....we'll jst have to wait and see !!!

Thank you again for this chapter, and I'm pleased to join you !!! :)
Automne
[rant]I'm once again reminded of how unimpressive of a villain Pride is. The battle at the beginning just lacked action and was overall uninteresting; it had this 'rushed' feeling some chapters held in the past, and Arakawa's attempt at giving Selim 'depth' by making him seem more 'human' lacked originality (and wtf with that dialogue with Al? Some parts were just really akward). At this point I'll just hope she kills him off fast, because that's truly wasting the potential of what could have been a very good antagonist, IMO.[/rant]

Well, at least the end of this chapter promises the next ones to be a bit more lively. Let's hope she won't get rid of Kimblee too fast (or at all. Not every enemies have to go).
Sannom
Personnaly, I loved how Arakawa presented Pride as "fond" of his "mother". That's certainly not something I was expecting to see or hear tongue.gif Lol, he even seems cute all alone in that prison with Al laugh.gif Personnaly, Pride impresses me, he is powerful, smart, but not too much like the kind of super-villains we have in other Shônens. Man, I actually come to appreciate his loyalty to his father, when you see the piece of s*** that is Greed dry.gif Gut wants everything, no matter the cost! Central will soon be turned into one huge Battle Royale, with Father, Mustang, Olivia, Grumman and now Greed who all want the supreme power... this is a mess!

The little bit of intel about May was also welcomed, and the way Scar talked of her... I love that girl and that guy wink.gif
jacksparrow589
This chapter has reminded me of why I love Hoho so much. He's an awesome guy! I know this is obvious, but he and Ed are very alike in most things, and I think that's why I like him so much.

Mei, on the other hand, I do not like. She's gone over to the dark side, that one, and Envy didn't promise her cookies-- just the world.

Selim/Pride tripping over the helmet was pretty funny. I had to read it twice to make myself beleive that he had done that though. Personally, I don't think he's quite fleshed out yet. I preferred him as a non-fleshed out, psychotic type of villain, though. He's supposed to be a sin, for goodness sake! Then again, there's the whole thing Lust said about Homuinculi being relatively close to humans.

Does anyone else think he looks a bit older, too? Like, even from ten chapters ago? Or is that just me?

Hmmm... Can't wait for the next chapter!
edxwinryfan
Again like in chapter 87 i wanted there to be Edxwin but of course Ed and Winry are not together so having EdxWin is hopeless crybaby.gif Hopefully before the end of the year there will be more EdxWin, this chapter was still pretty good i guess thumbup1.gif

Either you're confusing May for Lin and Envy for Greed, or you are trying to make us believe the less believable lies I've ever heard laugh.gif

Well of course there wouldn't be in this chapter. Winry's in Resembool where Ed is not. However, provided Ed lives, I won't doubt their will be. His last words were to have her bake him an apple pie and keep it warm for him when he comes back. He also needs to give her her earrings back as well. ^_~

All in all this was a really awesome chapter! I was super surprised to see that Pride is "fond" of the woman he calls "mother." Very interesting. Don't despair yet Automne! You never know what Arakawa may have up her sleeve in regards to Pride. He hasn't been in the story for very long now. ^_~
Sensenic
Yaaay! unexpectedly early raw and all!!

Thanks Ropespinner, Causmic Fire and Hisshou!

Al rocks, man.
Unexpected? Greed treason!
And it seems we're getting Kimbley vs Scar (part 2) next...

And I think that's all I have to say for the moment...

Also, did Ed also mention the "heroes are supposed to be late" line at some point in the past? (pointing once again how similar father and son are) or am I remembering wrong?

Funnily, even when I used to feel this rushedness a lot, now I think it has the right pacing back again... I think Arakawa DID rush things to get to this point, but now that we're here, at the final climax, it's logic for it to be faster....

As for Pride, underwhelming? No, he might have been beaten apparently fast, but look at it... He can't be beaten on a physical fight... Even Hohenheim himself was scared to face him directly. The only one who could keep up was Ed with his hardened arm, but he wouldn't have lasted much, fighting at his best as he was, and all he could do was defend anyway. The good guys so far have only won each "round" outsmarting him, relying on well-timed one-time tricks (turning off lights, light bombs), and even with all that Pride was pretty confident (well, he is proud... ;p ) all the time and the "good guys" were the ones fighting for their lives till the end. And the victory cost them one important ally.

Were you expecting a longer fight perhaps? Given how FMA's fights have always been fast paced (one, two chapters at most), and, well, this is not a fighting manga, I don't think this was going to be different.
More drama, perhaps? Given the current "positive" trend of the good guys getting better and better, along with manga's message of the brothers' maturing and improving, and their allies along with them, again, this didn't hint much at the possibility of this fight being different either.

Finally, I think that, just like with Wrath, this won't be the last we'll see of him.

I'll agree that him having the soft side for her mum might be out of character, specially after having told Wrath he had spent too much time around humans, when he himself had been passing as a human all along and was still a proud, EVILmwhwhahwahwa tongue.gif hommunculus. But it's not completely illogical either, and it builds up for one beatiful last scene for the whole Bradley family...
jacksparrow589
Sannom- Yeah. Never mind. I read that chapter wrong and let my imagination get away with me. I did mean Mei and Envy, but now that I'm more awake, I don't have a good idea as to why, other than that the last time I saw them, they were together... I think...

I'm not going to break my brain over it thogh. I'll just admit my mistake and move on. Happy?
Sannom
Lol, it's okay, no harm intented laugh.gif

Wow when I was reading it I was just starting to wonder where the heck Kimblee disappeared off too and look who shows up in the last page? ^__^

Thanks CodenameElizabeth! biggrin.gif

I liked this chapter. My favorite line in it was Hohenheim's: "Don't mock my son!" I'm glad to see he cares. biggrin.gif

I also enjoyed the development of Al's character. I love the parts where he stands on his own and is his own man. Ed does need to chill out on his father though.

Then again, there's the whole thing Lust said about Homuinculi being relatively close to humans.

Yeah... I thought about that at first, too... But once I gave a real thought about it, it made perfect sense to me.

Pride is the first of the seven sins and the 'mother' of all others. And it's even MORE dangerous because it's not something as clearly bad as most the other sins. It's easily forgotten or even appreciated. It can be translated as selfishness.
People don't revolt about it automatically as they usually do with Lust or Greed or Wrath: it's an attractive kind of sin. And that's why it's so dangerous, cause you can easily be mislead by it.
And its appearance is not as aggressive as the other sins. It's not the kind of sin that will destroy you through 'crushing', it destroys you through corruption and lack of humility. It's corrosive.

I think Arakawa was really smart in putting that sin as a child, which looks innocent, but at the same time is completely self-centered. And also an entity of shadows, which is something intangible, incontrollable and, at the same time, something that seems harmless at first sight. It will not hurt you, but prevent you from seeing clearly, take away your capacity to act.

So, most certainly, is not the kind of enemy which will attack you head on, but has a more psychological effect.
RoyxRizaFan
These past chapters are getting me a little bit back into my old FMA spirit. I was so proud of Al when he thought up that plan to trap Pride! Hoho was awesome, too.

Mrs. Bradley has broken down another homonculus! Interesting that Pride actually likes her...

I hope he isn't defeated this easily, though.

AND HALLELUIA KIMBLEE'S BACK! It's about time! Now where the hell is Mei?????!!! I'm still very worried about her...what is Envy trying to trick her into doing at Central???
Drakeneo
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gukumatz
Mei was going to Central with Envy last time we saw her. Now GreedLing is going to Central. I smell a dual family reunion coming up.

But your translation is very good, great thanks wink.gif

guys, there is one thing i wanna know about this chapter:
if Greed's got the absolute shield, and the same thing did Ed with his automail, how could Pride kill Greed ( and it's written that he did it for many times in this episode)??? cause he couldn't even make a scratch on Ed's mail.. i fell a little bit confused....

I think if you attack Greed before he has time to form the carbon shield, you can kill him. It always takes him a split-second to form it.

Greed didn't make the full shield, and he is not skilled enough to dodge and parry everything (the Homonculus are jokes in combat, Lin was the one who kept Greed "alive"). Plus, if he bit him instead of stabbing him, now that he has Gluttony's teeth, even the Ultimate Shield can't do anything against that.
Imbris
Yep, agreed with Sannom. The Homunculus are good fighters are first, but their problem is that they're all one-trick ponies. And once you figure out the trick, they don't have much left.
HisshouBuraiKen
Yo all,

I added the two missing pages from the new raw to the translation (http://www.fullmetal-alchemist.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12488&view=findpost&p=648047)

The "comrades" line from Scar makes more sense now.

Also, I've gathered a few people who've been scanning FMA on their own together to form a group (finally, after like a year and a half of translating and just depending on the curious people speed scanning) - we'd planned to start next month but with these new pages I may be able to get them together for a release with this chapter instead biggrin.gif

Why do they upload cropped raws? ( ´A`)

Just 2 pages and everything makes much more sense, now.
