It means official. For instance Gracia and Maes is an obvious cannon relationship in FMA.

Meh, AlxMei...give them a few years first. I think whilst it's cute with Mei's fantasies and all, at their current ages, I don't think they could pursue this seriously, or without some controversy or challenges on whether it's realistic (most 11 year olds I know are very: 'eeewww!!' about members of the opposite sex - whilst I think it could work, it'd be a bit weird).

So, assuming Al is 14 and Mei is 11 respectively (I always thought Mei was about 6 years old, going by her height - heh, we know from Ed that sort of guessing is wrong), then lets assume Al gets his body back happily, whilst Mei has left for Xing forever (or there's another tearful goodbye before that). Wait 5 years, and Al is 19, Mei is 16. I'd say those ages are much more reasonable (personally, I think seven years would work better - Al is 21, and Mei is 18 - but that'd probably be a bit too old). Al is old enough to go travelling around the world. He goes into Xing to do a little studying on Xingese Alchemy, oh gosh, it's Mei! Oh gosh, she's hot now! Old flame relights, they remember their like for each other, and natural attraction.

I'd personally love to see Mei's expression when Al randomly appears from nowhere (fantasies come true!), and the Frog Prince idea. I also love the possibility of an old flame relighting like that, with the relationship having the best of both sides - a cute side when they were younger, and a more serious side when they are older. As they are at the moment, not together but having potential thoughts, it's quite adorable.

Ever since I saw that (slightly cheesy but completely adorable) hugging scene, it's likely it'll be canon.

Oh, and Canon = something which is supported and shown by the actual manga/anime/whatever format. What the author says, basically.

Although it's a tough one, it is possible. And yes May is adorable. And she pack quite a few tricks up her sleeve for one of such short stature as she. She's more powerful then I could have ever imagined (foreign type of alchemy...yummy!). I too worry about her being left with that psychopathic worm.

This is actually my OTP for the entire series. Every time I see this pair together I die from cuteness overload, of course, but it's more than that. These two are actually extremely compatible. They'd just be so good for each other! Al is patient, calm and kind of snarky. Mei is feisty and fiercely loyal. Al's calm nature balances out Mei's fierce one, and his patience will just let him laugh off her more inane behavior. Mei keeps Al's life exciting and she'll always stand up for him. In each other they find an ideal match. Al gets a girl who shares his affectionate nature (and love of animals) that can also keep up with him intellectually. Mei gets what she always wants: a gentleman who will treat her right.

Yes, right now it's just cute teases, they're both pretty young, but down the road I could see this becoming a powerful relationship between two pretty incredible individuals.

and FullmetalMagician I love royai too! Probably because in some weird way they're like an older, gender-flipped version of Almei. All of the semi-canon couples in the series are great. Arakawa does romance so well. I love how she manages to put so many cute moments in for the pairings without bogging down the story or making it saccharine.

Personnaly I find the Al X Mei pair adorable. I love the potential they have down the road, and for the moment its just really cute.

I doubt I would ever guess her for 13 right now though... when I first saw the character I would have guessed '6' even though I knew she had to be older. Part of that is based on appearance, and part on her character. Mei's fantasies for one: cute crushes, but very childish. Who at 13 fantasizes about being on a merry-go-round? lol--maybe someone does, but that image seems like a 8 or 10 year old's to me. And for everyone who thinks that 10 is too young to be as good as she is at xing alchemy? Ha--there are prodigies everywhere in this manga. Just look at Ed and Al at 10-11! They were doing stuff that most adults didn't have the skill for (or nerve/insanity)

You must this into words so perfectly, so that it's impossible to argue. Not that I was intending to, because I love these two together, but anyone who isn't sure about the pairing could be convinced reading that

Finally, they've met, and in episode 31 she'll be having her first Al fantasy! I can't wait! They're so adorable!

So, question for everyone. Al will probably get his body back soon. How's Mei going to react when she sees him all malnourished??? Sad and worried for her the boy she's infatuated with? Or furious that another Elric brother gave her false expectations?

I thought a lot about this too XD She can't be furious! haha, well since they kinda built up more of a relationship than with Ed before her hopes were crushed, maybe she'll be more concerned XD Allthough his claims off having short golden hair and been stronger than Ed I'd say are both untrue in his malnourished state XD Hopefully Mei will be understanding, and see that when he's had 6months of eating sleeping grooming and exercising he'll be as good as new haha

I think she will be worried... In the beginning, Mei's crush on Al was more like hero-worshipping, but they've spent some time together in the North and gotten to know each other, and by now I think Mei genuinely likes Al because Al's such a good person.

Mei knows a lot about healing. Maybe she can do something about Al's bad health once he gets his body back...

I really hoping/thinking along these lines too. I think that after her first fantasy about Al, she always imagines him in his armor instead of as some bishonen, right? That's probably a good sign.

Anyone else feel this scene was a bit, um, tacked on? Love the scene by itself of course (shoulder spikes!?!), but it felt kind of bizarre at the end of episode 30.

The structure of episode 30 was... not really very well-planned in general, to put it mildly. That scene should have come later and we should have concentrated more on Ishbal in ep. 30. In the manga, there was volume 15 which was very dark, and then more hopeful/heartwarming chapters 62-63 afterwards, which worked as a nice contrast, but they screwed that up in the new anime... So yeah, the Al/Mei scene in ep. 30 was quite seriously out of place.

Let's hope that the future episodes will be better. And that they don't screw up the adorable goodbye hug in chapter 80...

Mei's Al fantasy was closer to it's manga look than the Ed fantasy XD it was VERY out of place should have been in the next episode, but it was still cute

btw. what do you mean by cannon? I thought the meaning of cannon was an already established character (not OC) or a firing weapon, does the word really have more meanings?

^When something is canon, it's basically just something that actually happens in the manga/story/show as written by the actual author. That can go for a character, scene or a pairing.

al x mei is an adorable pairing but mei chang isn't in the original anime and I hate brotherhood with a buring passion so mei chang will have to perish along with that ;_; =/ @@

Here is a shameless plug for the board's FMA festival! If anyone has any AlxMei/Al/Mei-related contributions to make for this year's FMA Fan Fun Festival, whether it be fanarts, fanfics, AMVs/MMVs, singing, cooking and craft works, feel free to take part! It's a celebration for our love for FMA and Alphonse and Mei are fantastic FMA characters; together (for those who ship them!) and as individuals. I thought I'd give it a mention just in case people would like to share their love of FMA, as a fan, through their favourite couple/characters! You know when first heard about this pairing I had no idea what to think of it. But after a while, and upon finishing Brotherhood, I've really grown to enjoy this pairing... and that enjoyment has now kinda turned into obsession over the pairing.

to be honest i never liked this pairing, al deserves love to but from someone who isnt annoying and more his age. isnt she like 8 and hes like almost 15. Thats like rape. isnt it?

She's definitely not 8. As far as I know, 8-year-old girls don't have developments in the chest area yet, which Mei seems to have in the manga. o.O' The least she could be would be 12 (considering a CHILD couldn't cross the desert with only a panda o.o), which is only a two year difference between her and Al.

And besides, even if she was younger, it wouldn't even matter anyway when they're adults. My parents are 7 years apart. And I'm pretty sure Hohenheim and Trisha, for example, have a significant amount of an age difference.

I think Al truly deserves love from someone who will love him unconditionally. Everyone's so focused on Ed, and Al needs someone who could appreciate HIM, so I'm glad Mei is there to fill that role. I find them to be super adorable. X3

^^Ditto! I personally like to think of Mei as a Mary Sue who grew up. In the beginning, she seems somewhat shallow and ditzy, fantasizing and chasing after the Elric brothers merely for their looks and charm (though don't get me wrong; I thought it was adorable and utterly hilarious. Mei is just too funny!) xD

But contrast that earlier attitude to the attitude she has by the end of the story: (Warning! Ending spoilers!) What's the first thing she does when Al comes back in his real body? Doe she cry because he isn't the hawt bishie she imagined? Does she turn away from his shriveled form in disappointment or disgust? No. She FREAKIN' GLOMPS HIM LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW. XD And that alone speaks volumes to me about how much she learned and matured throughout the story. She doesn't care what Al looks like anymore. She doesn't care if he's armor. She doesn't care if he's a walking skeleton. She just - wants - him. In whatever package he comes in. Safe, sound and whole.

Now THAT'S true love. None of her old fluffy fangirl fantasies could've held a candle to that, and now she's wise enough to know it.

^ Yep, yep, yep. I very much agree. I love the fact that she matured like that - it shows that she's not just some ditz who only likes Al for his prince-charmingness. x3 She likes him for HIM. I was so emotional at that scene. D:
