the only gay character in fullmetal I can think of is that mechanic that Winry work with in Rush Valley, forgot his name and that's because Arkawa intended that way. You see in with face cream and a nightie and he look so obviously gay.

I have nothing, absolutely nothing against yaoi

know why? because I LOVE IT! I prefer shounen-ai, generally, but yaoi is completely fine by me

I am heterosexual woman and I do date heterosexual men but gay pairings are just something I love and canīt live without. for me, gay couples are incredibly hot! and like I always say, donīt like, donīt watch... I am not watching yuri either, simply because I am not interested.
I donīt like if people judge someone based on the fact, that she or he enjoy watching yaoi/yuri. I tolerate all people, their tastes and opinions.... and I expect them to do the same

Can someone clear this up for me? What's the difference between shounen-ai and yaoi? (I thought they were the same thing...

Anyway, I agree with most other people's posts, I support canon pairings (like EdxWin and Royai) so yaoi pairings only bother me if they screw up the obvious couples.

Its just disturbing. It doesn't make me mad or anything. If they are just couples fans made up themselves, then I don't get to mad about it, unless the author and artist says otherwise, then it isn't a problem. Even if certain characters are gay, it doesn't matter to me anyways. I don't watch that kinda of stuff anyways. But overall, it's just disturbing.
With Yuri, it's different. If I was a boy I would probably have something more to say about that.
I guess it's the fan girls, to I guess.
I don't watch yaoi because I just don't like watching gay people, sorry. I am not homophobic but I am a hetero and just don't have to watch it. Also, yaoi manga characters are wimpy girly randoms (I know many yaoi fangirls and I just can't stand them crying about how awesome those guys are; they are not) and yaoi fnaficiton is absolute nonsense (anyone still laughing at EdXAl or RoyXHughes?).
Also, I don't hate yaoi watchers. I just disagree with them. But obsessive fangirls are annoying AS HELL.

Yaoi = porn
Shounen-ai = not porn
basically, yeah. shounen-ai is more about looks, touches, hugs, sometimes kisses... sometimes itīs not even the real relationship between the characters, especially if itīs light shounen-ai. characters just care about each other very deeply and so on.... thatīs why I prefer shounen-ai. itīs more about what they feel, how much they like each other.... itīs nice.
yaoi itīs about sex. you can actually see the act in yaoi anime and they donīt necesseraly have to have a plot. sometimes itīs just porn and I have to admit that just porn isnīt very satisfying for me. Even in yaoi I prefer ones like Haru wo Daiteia where there is actually a plot.
about the pairing like royxed... I like reading fanfiction about it and I think thatīs okey since I donīt want them to be actually together in anime or manga. I like the pairings royxriza and edxwinry in anime and manga but I donīt see why wouldnīt it be okey to like the pairings like royxed if we take them completely fictional. I get that some people donīt like it but itīs not like itīs everywhere and most authors put warnings to their fics, so donīt like, donīt read... like I said, I enjoy reading even about the slash pairings from fma. again I prefer if itīs about their relationship, some angst maybe, not sex...

What I hate about Yaoi:
-It can make certain characters into pedophiles, like in the case of EdxRoy (Roy is 30 years old, dammit! He's twice Ed's age!!!)
-The word YAOI translates as GAY PORN. And SHOUNEN-AI as NOT-PORN (What I mean is it's non sexual relationship) CAN'T YOU FANGIRLS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE??!!!
-I know a gay couple personnally and they DO NOT act like in a fanfiction! (They don't kiss every 5 minutes, they don't say "I luv u" all the time, etc...)
-Some fangirls are WAY too obsessed by it.

I personally dislike yaoi unless a yaoi couple is canon, so I'm not homophobic or anything like that. I'm usually into more obvious/canon couples or those with a really deep-rooted bond. Also, I have absolutely nothing against people who like yaoi...
What I dislike about it is that from what I've seen, a lot of yaoi couples are completely baseless. I read a few shipping manifestos at one point out of curiosity and I couldn't help but *facepalm* over some of the reasons they think these characters should be together.
A lot of the time it's something like helping them out in battle/helping them up, asking if they're okay etc which I think is ridiculous reasoning. I could ask my friend if she's okay and help her up tomorrow but it doesn't mean that I'm in love with her.
Either that or something said to a character by another can be taken way out of context when it's just two mere friends interacting as two friends normally would.
And saying that a character "looks gay" is just ludicrous in my book. Not to mention that yaoi fanfictions/arts are severely out of character the majority of the time. And this doesn't just go for yaoi, but for some fan-made het pairings too.
But, like I touched upon before, I only like couples who make it clear at some point that they love each other, so maybe that's why I'm not much of a fan of non-canon pairings, yaoi or otherwise.

Slash pairings. They're doomed to being bad writing from the start. I wrote entire articles on it.
But for the romantic stuff in general, and not just Yaoi, the thing I dislike most about them is cheesy set-ups, plotholes, and random events that don't make sense. Romance doesn't happen overnight.
I don't mind Yaoi itself, so long as it's meaningful and makes sense. It's like any other kind of writing or art; it can be good, and it can be bad.

I voted for "Nothing"
The first Yaoi I read was "Private Magician" and I loved it. I liked the story and the added "romantic" scenes as some put it above weren't bad but they were okay. My favorite Yaoi is "DevilXDevil."
I've seen some BAD yaoi manga, one in particular called "Level-C" every page is sexual and it drawn poorly... I don't know it just wasn't good.
For me when I read them, I don't get a thrill off of them, in particular I like the stories themselves....
In the case of EdxRoy as I-luv-FMA stated, being wrong because of the age difference, its just a story, all of them are. There is a case of a FMA pairing being MustangXBradley, that in a sense is the same age gap but because they are BOTH over 18 its not pedophilic... (I made that word up I believe) I've seen some decent EdxRoy yaoi and they aren't that terrible.... *shrugs*
I dunno, everyone is entitled to their thoughts for me, I love the stuff. Meh.

Well, the reason I say slash is doomed from the start is because they usually occur between characters who aren't even gay to begin with--it's not really consistent, if you're going for good writing. You can probably write well, and perhaps make a convincing story, if we assumed the characters were gay--but that's actually the problem. Because they aren't, general audiences can't help but feel the relationship is awkward because they'll be too busy wondering why these characters, whom they know to not be gay are involved in a gay relationship--it's distracting.

What about characters who aren't explicitly stated to be completely straight? That leaves some things to the imagination.

Technically not pedophilia. Ed is fifteen-sixteen throughout most of the story, so it'd be ephebophilia. Plus, we don't really know what the age of consent is in the setting of the story. Besides, there are plenty of fanfics where Ed is older. Acquaintance of mine is currently writing one that takes place after the end of the manga where Ed is in his twenties, so age isn't always an issue in these pairings.
Now, what do I hate about yaoi? I hate how one or both of the characters are often made OOC. Like fanfics that turn Ed into a whiny, submissive girl. This also applies to yaoi artwork. I also dislike when characters who obviously hate each other are paired up. Ed/Envy for example; I don't see how that could work unless it's a rape fic.
von Hohenheim
Aug 7 2010, 06:54 PM
Well, what story actually has the character or the author saying that the characters are straight? Most stories usually don't do that, and you can usually make inferences to their sexual orientation by paying attention to the people they have relationships with--of course, this doesn't exclude the possibility of bisexuality, but it's a cop-out more than anything else; there aren't that many people out there who are really bisexual. If they were bisexual, it would have to be really obvious.
If you are referring to characters whose genders remain unknown, or who have no known relationships with other characters, quite possibly because they are just minor characters, I suppose we're free to speculate--but that also has to apply to the characters they're going to have relationships with--they should also have a compatible sexual orientation, and their relationship should still be plausible.
AXavierB
Aug 7 2010, 07:36 PM
You're right about that. That's why slash pairings only work in the hands of a moderately talented writer. Someone who's able to make the relationship believable. Unfortunately those are rare. Sturgeon's Law and all that.
von Hohenheim
Aug 7 2010, 09:16 PM
I'd imagine if you wanted to make a good slash fanfic, it would be incredibly difficult, or not worth the effort--it doesn't sound like fun. You have to find some way to force different personalities and a really good excuse for someone to change their sexual orientation. It sounds more like a chore than fun really.

May I start off by saying I am 100% a yaoi fangirl. I live and breath for yaoi. When it comes to fma yaoi, though, I've noticed that most of the pairings (the good ones at least) all involve Roy Mustang. Roy x ed, roy x maes, and roy x havoc are normally what comes to mind. However, I have heard and seen some weird pairings, like breda x armstrong and al x greed (talk about creepy). Has anyone noticed this trend?

Most of the opposition to yaoi has been surprising here. It has to do with it "not being realistic" or not fitting into the storylines of animes. First of all, most hentai-related things like that never have a chance of being "real", they are mainly for sexual entertainment. I don't like it because I do not like gay hentai, plain and simple.
Damn, after reading Wikipedia, it seems there is more to this than I thought. Well still, the idea of any Boy Love is kind of disturbing to me, but I completely respect people who do enjoy it. Hating on someone because of their harmless interests is wrong IMO.

So long as the latter isn't persistently pestering you about their sexual fantasies or favorite slash pairings.

I don't dislike it, when i turned 16 i got into a phase where i became a yaoi/shounen-ai fangirl, but now I'm opening up to straight couples more.
I think the reason I disliked straight couples when I was younger, was because I think until my 12th age I still fell in love with anime characters. (weird huh? i thought real people weren't pretty enough so i was all into anime characters)
Now that I'm 19 I've still never fallen in love with someone, but I did fell attraction to some handsome people so I guess that's a start. Either way, since the past two years or so I've become less gender focussed. So in the past I couldn't stand straight couples in anime, but now I actually think it's great when there are straight couples in anime. I'm also not that much of a yaoi fan anymore, I still like it, but I used to be a crazy naruto yaoi fangirl that liked any male X male naruto pairing (wrong, very very wrong xD)
Now I'm not just less gender focussed, I also think girl x girl pairings can be cute, and I'm much more canon focussed. As long as the characters bend to each other in the story it's good, and now I think it's very wrong when two characters get paired that would never pair IC.
Most fan-yaoi comics are also very OOC, which is not cool. A doujinshi should have IC characters, if it doesn't you're just stealing the physical design, clothes and names for your own OC's.
SO yeah, I'm still a yaoi fangirl, but not when the characters are OOC or with non canon couples. When I see EdxAl I feel very disturbed, mainly because I have brothers and sisters myself and it sickenes me to think of ever having to *puke*
Then again, the yaoi-fangirl in me still goes 'aaawwww cute' whenever i see EdxAl shounen-ai, even though it's bothering me because they are siblings.

I voted other, considering I sorta like yaoi (in truth, I'm more into bara these days... big, hairy, muscular men... =v=), but I find it utterly silly lately, aside from all the other reasons above:
1. They're all always so pretty and feminine and... hairless (I know they're supposed to be bishounen, but teenagers tend to at least have some body hair).
2. Most of the time, the boys aren't gay, which makes me wonder why they're with guys in the first place (I wouldn't put it past some boys to experiment/fall in love with another guy despite being straight, but they don't even try to make it plausible, and it happens so often that it seems more like a fad that's about to go out of style).
3. I'm not gonna lie, the sex is pretty ridiculous sometimes.
4. The plots sometimes seem really silly. And, to be honest, most of the yaoi manga I've read tend to have two of the following plots:
~ a. They've known each other for a while and through a series of dramatic and life-changing events they realize they love each other and have sex and BABIES LOL j/k, mpreg is creepy.
~ b. They meet, sleep together, sometimes a relationship develops, sometimes it doesn't, but it's all good because it's two pretty boys and yaaaaaay~
5. The fandom tends to be all 'OMG [insert pairing here] IS SO kiwi DESU AND ANYBDY WHO SEZ OTHERWISE IS DISCRIMINATING AGAINST GAY PPL', which is very shameful for more respectful fans. Very shameful indeed.
6. ONCE THE SHIPPING GOGGLES ARE ON, THEY DON'T COME OFF.
7. It's shounen-ai + some sex.
And those are the reasons that I hate yaoi. ^^;
EDIT: Since when is k*waii something that needs to be censored? 8| I guess it's just -that- annoying...
I know the board does censor some swear words, but please refrain from using them if you can. That way we can keep it as a PG site. Thanks. ~Scar

I have no problems with Yaoi when it's canon. I'm not a great fan of it myself, but I don't have a problem it it. But I don't really like Yaoi fanfiction that turns two straight characters who already have significant others gay for the enjoyment of fangirls/fanboys, usually making them so OOC in the process. And it bugs me when they give no real reason why the two characters supposedly are in love - that also applies to straight couples as well. I don't like pairing random characters together just for the sake of having them in a relationship with someone.

I guess this will be the eternal discussion

At the beginning, I didnīt like it. I hated it with all my soul...
And now, I just donīt like it, but I accept it o ō
To be more specific:
QUOTE
Really, I hate the fans more. Especially the rabid ones who immediately hate the lead female because supposdly she "gets in the way" of their OTP.
Agree with that. Seriously....if the mangaka didnīt make the main character or any character gay, you just accept it, and not start to lead a squad as a rebelion -,-
Itīs Winryīs fault? Itīs Sakuraīs (Naruto) fault? Itīs Rukiaīs fault?
NO! Theyīre only the female characters and in some cases, the girlfriends of the main one.
The reality is...that theyīre just pieces of paper ú u (too bad)
Besides, I dunno why, but I feel kinda frustrated when I see those beautiful yaoi fan arts
and some yaoi fan fiction, because they have excellent ideas and a real gift for the arts.
Theyīre gifted and they write or draw yaoi, instead of drawing real things about the serie u u
Anyway, I accept yaoi and respect the different opinions about it...

It's not that I'm anti-yaoi or dislike it, I just hate the reasoning for why people normally like it. People will take two characters that are clearly straight and pair them up because they "think it'd be hot". They take two guys from any anime that are rivals or allies or just plain hate each other and pair them up, even if they have canon love interests or something. That's why I usually hate it. However, I'm not against yaoi itself.

i don't hate it, it's just when there are pairings THAT DONT MAKE SENSE BUT ARE TOO POPULAR TO BE CONSIDERED CRACK >.>
that and some people just jump right into it- sometimes making up feeling that dont exist, like characters hate each other then put them together then BAM! they suddenly love each other- um.... where did that come from?
if the creator didnt want them to be gay, then they're not gay
those are my reasons anyway.

Not so much into yaoi (or any explicit content), but I really like BL a lot. I don't like it when people MAKE characters gay just for the sake of having a gay couple though, I find it irritating. I like canon BL, or plausible couples. It doesn't have to be canon, just so long as it makes sense where if someone mentioned the couple you'd think "Oh yeah, I could see that happening."
If it's a nonsensical pairing, then it isn't those two characters anymore, it's two homosexuals with names you got from a book/show/game/whatever.
Of course, I stopped reading fanfiction years ago. But this irritation will still crop up on deviantART now and then. xD (As in the drawings. I don't read anything on dA)

There's nothing I really "hate" about Yaoi. I just don't like couples with characters that never met (for example). It's okay when it's AU and Humor or a challenge or something, but otherwise, I don't really like that.
But well, if someone likes it though, that's okay with me. It's FANart and FANfiction.
What I really dislike, are rabid fans who hate and flame everyone who doesn't like their OTP. Oo I mean, WTH.
