~ Question On Philosopher's Stone, Exactly what can it do? ~

The Philosopher's stone seems to be a powerful element in FMA. Even a modestly sized one that fits in the palm of your hand seems to weild great power. But if a minor one will suffice, why would anyone go to all the troube of making a gigantic PS? Not very travel convienent or inconspicuous.

From everything I've read in FMA, we know that all Philosopher's Stones, at the very least, do the following:

• Grant immortality.
• Generate gold.
• Crucial to creating Homonuculi.
• Various healing atributes (As shown by Dr. Marcoh, drive behind Ed and Al's quest for their bodies)
• Magnifies alchemic processes.

Now, the Father created the Homonuculi, the oldest of which (Pride) is over 200 years old, so it's fairly obvious that he's mastered immortality or some version thereof. Gold is nice, but any greed-stricken, skilled Alchemist (As Father is no doubt) could transmute gold, and even then, a small Philosopher's Stone would work just as nicely. Homonuculi use small ones (See "Travel convienence"), and any potential illness or injury Father has could easily be cured by, yet again, a small, pocket-fitting stone.

This leaves only one other known conclusion.

As demonstrated by Cornello, even a PS so small (and incomplete) it fits in a ring can bypass the laws of equivalent exchange and create dazzling wonders ("Maximum profit for minimum cost," I believe it was). Well, suppose that the larger a PS is, the higher the "Profit" to "Cost" ratio is. If that is true, then a ginormous PS could consievably alter and reconstruct the very face of the Earth (Possibly even deeper), recreating it however he (or she) who holds the PS desires.

..."In their own image" perhaps. I think that the Father wants to play Go

Or it could be that the smaller "fake" stones don't really achieve things like immortality, resurrections or the restorations of entire limbs. Remember that Marcoh is a DOCTOR and that probably implies that he knows how to target the mechanics of a human body with his alchemy, it may be something only Marcoh can do because of his blend of alchemy with medical knowledge and access to the lesser Stones. I've always gotten the impression that alchemy only allows you to do those things that you know witha a familiarity. We do see Ed trying futiley to ressurect Nina, which is well beyond his realm of knowledge due to it's complexity. Thusly, these lesser stones don't really let you achieve the truly impressive things.

It's like materia in FF7. The bigger it is, the more punch it packs.

Are we talking about the Anime or the Manga here? I've read all 51 available chapters, and I have yet to see Ed try to ressurect Nina.

My main point is, then need that stone. They need it real, and they need it big...perhaps, size of a city big. The question is: Why?

Ed made tons of gold (still wondering how they managed to bring it to Yoki's house, tho' ; ) from metal scrap. No need for a stone here.
They just don't do it cuz it's illegal and highly punished.


I believe not. Remember that in order to create the stone you have to pay a really high price: Human lives. Lots of them.
As I see it, a PS is like an alchemic "credit card" or "bank account" (at least the fake ones): you "store the money", that is, what you'll give in exchange (the human lives) and then you can spend it whenever/however you want, making it that you're apparently bypassing the law of equivalent trade. Until you run out of lives (as in a videogame ), as happened to Cornello. Or Lust, for that matter.


So you get:
- sth "small" to give away, of simliar nature to what are you going to make: the rose.
- the alchemic process: you "spend" the rose AND X human lives from the stone.
- and then, the result, that is, something of similar nature to what you used but "bigger": the sunflower.

The law is still kept.



How do you know? Marco said they're making a giant stone, but Envy said "you came close". So maybe he failed on that part. Or maybe not, but we don't for sure. Why do you people tend to forget Envy's answer?

I don't think it's so much that people forget Envy's answer as they are interpreting it differently. The fact that Envy says "you came close" not only implies that Marco missed something, but that most of what he said was correct.

I don't really think the physical size of the stone means anything. I mean, after all those times Roy killed Lust, when she finally did die her stone was the same size it was when she showed it to Havoc and Roy earlier.

Wow, I've never thought oh that! However, there is a definite size difference between the fake stone that Cornelli (the Lior priest) had and the stones that made up the core of the Humuncoli. Maybe it's just because it was fake??
Come to think of it, Marco's Stone was about the same size as the Humuncoli's...


I believe that in both the anime and manga, the stones were used up and then disintegrated into nothingness. I don't think it ever showed that the stones got smaller. Maybe I missed that scene?

Just a mention - the Philosopher's Stone may also be used to open the Gate of Knowledge without paying the "travel fee". See below for more on this.

A stone of large quantity could probably be used to pass a huge amount of people and/or large quantities of material through the Gate.

That presents some interesting avenues of theory - what exactly exists on the other side of the Gate? Perhaps the gate can be used for time travel?

Hohenheim and Tricia had made some sort of promise to each other. Tricia couldn't keep it because she died first. Perhaps Hohenheim wants to travel through the gate in an effort to fulfill that promise?

The ability to transmute an entire city through the Gate of Knowledge - perhaps the anime version's notion of our world vs. the alchemy world is part of this idea?

I think the goal of an extra-large Stone is related to the Gate somehow; the other reasons seem too mundane.

I agree that the stone will be used in the opening of the gate, but I don't agree with the Tricia Hoenheim thing. One, because we don't if Hoenheim and Father are the same person. Sure they look alike, but we've never seen father's entire face and Hoenheim actually seems pretty nice (he saved those people in the cart). Where as Father plans on killing people to create a stone. We now know that the whole city wide stone sacrifice thing has been a conspiracy since the inception of the country. So why start the process of keeping a promise that he hadn't even made yet as Tricia wasn't even alive? I think the ultimate goal in opening the gate iss knowledge. I think the secrets to the universe are beyond it. Knowledge is power, and father seems like quite the greedy guy when it comes to power.

I'm so curious what Hohenheim's up to. He was saying in front to Trisha's grave "a little more time..." so I guess he was planning on coming back for her and the boys after he accomplished whatever it is, huh?
Why did he end up wandering back to Resembool at that particular time anyway?

I seriously doubt Father (Who I do not think is Hohenheim, but just for example) has been planning all this mayhem for decades to die and join his wife who only past away maybe six years ago (Currently, Ed is 15, he was sixteen when he passed the State Alchemy Exam, and that was at least a year after the start of the Auto-mail surgery and stuff). It seems to me that he is trying to purposefully create a gigantic PS. I'm just trying to figure out why. I thought I had reached a logical conclusion, but I guess not.

~ May Chang's Name, In actual Chinese? (Xingese?) ~

I've seen use of Ling in chinese writing in various works of fan art- seems to be a pretty common name, but does anyone know what the chinese characters are that make up May Chang (Mei chen, mei chan, etc)'s name?

Excuse me for bein a n00b at this; the Chinese language scares and confuses the crap out of me.

"mei" is the chinese pinyin for the characters that make up teh word "meimei", younger sister.
Additionally, xiao mei would mean small sister, small little sister. I've never actually seen the characters for the names, but that's how i've translated them. I'm not sure if "chan/chang" actually has a meaning, or if it's just her surname.

Um, most last names I've run across do have a meaning. At least, mine and everyone else's I know have a meaning.

I think he might mean there is no official meaning. Since, after all, it is only shown in katakana in Japanese; Arakawa may not have picked an official chinese translation for it. (Though one of the guidebooks does ensure that the english romanization is May Chang. Then again it also says Ling is Lin, and that's just not cool.)

Yes, that's what I did mean. or, possibly, that the meaning has been lost.
However, that's untrue. One of the meanings is "prosperous", and this seems the only one that is in anyway related to anything we know about Mei's clan. If it's being used as a bit of irony, then it's quite appropriate.

Well, I guess there's 2 ways of translating it:

张梅 (pronounced zhang mei in han yu pin yin) OR 陈梅 (pronounced chen mei)

陈 (chen) in Cantonese is pronounced Chan, but 张 (zhang) sounds a bit more like Chan. Both are real surnames.

According to this dandy dictionary I currently have on my lap, 陈 means... well, it depends how it's used. It can mean old, or to arrange, or to narrate, or... it really depends. It's the same with 张. It can mean to open, to look, to open shop, and as a unit of measurement (a piece of paper, etc.)

As for 梅 (mei), that's a bit easier; it's a type of flower which opens during winter, I forgot what it's called (not cherry blossoms, those open in spring).

There are, of course, other ways of translating it, but to me these 2 combinations sound the likeliest, and out of the 2 I prefer 张梅 (Zhang Mei).

The kanji don't look anything like the cantonese. I originally thought that it was a chinese version... Does arakawa use some sort of shorthand instead of the full characters?

so far as chinese goes "Chan" or "Chang" has about as much meaning as the english last names "Smith" or "Baker". i dont think theres any hidden meaning behind it, its just a common last name

Bad example, actually, cuz both Smith and Baker have clear meanings: the first is some kind of craftsman (blacksmith, swordsmith...) and the second, someone who makes bread.

In raw version of manga, so far Arakawa sensei is using Japanese Katakana for all Xing names.

That character means "plum."
(BTW, that one is the only chinese character that shows up in the post. Others all look like a tiny square thingy on my computer.)

Yes, 张 is the cantonese way of writing Zhang/Chang/etc. If I were to write my name in cantonese, my surname would be 张.

~ Question About Alchemy, About chimeras.... ~


Why did Ed and Al have to pay a huge price when they tried to transmute their mother, but Shou Tucker didn't when he transmuted Nina into a chimera? Is it just because Ed and Al were trying to raise the dead? But they say in several different places that alchemy on humans at all is forbidden. So why didn't Tucker lose a limb or something?

And if it is forbidden, why didn't the military takes steps to execute Tucker when they found out he'd used Nina? Did Scar just get to him first (they DID have him under house arrest...)?

Anyway, any help would be appreciated. It just confused me that one sort of 'human' alchemy would cost an arm and a leg, but another is completely 'okay'.

(And I know, this topic is more FMA general, but I couldn't think where else to put it...)

One major reason is that the anime doesn't make a lot of sense most of the time.

I think that Tucker wasn't really human anymore. So, you can argue two things- either his 'lost limb' was losing his real body, or that because he isn't a human he can make human forms.

You could also argue that since he's making them out of other bits, it's not really human transmutation.

The military is under the control of a homunculus. It's not necessarily going to be that worried about human rights.

The military made it seem like Tucker was exicuted, so he could help them do alchemic tests.But he wasn't actually exacuted.
The military was headed by a hummunculous, so he didn't really care about what was fobidden he just wanted Tucker to create a stone.

When Shou did tests on his daughter, and wife he was still human.[/spoiler]

At the beginning, it's because Tucker isn't creating a human. There's nothing that says that you can't use humans as material.

Well, I geuss it was just bad luck for Ed, and Al that they lost their bodies.

And Tucker doing human alchemy, he lost his family, his saneness, and..well.. for the records his life.
When he did human alchemy he was sopposable exacuted so he could no longer have friends, or family he had left cause everyone thought he was dead.He had nothing but his clones, after doing human alchemy, so I think he did lose alot.

Another thing to consider is that Alchemy for medical purposes is also OK to perform on humans. It won't help massive recovery unless you have a PS but it can be used in other cases.

The kind of human alchemy that Ed and Al did involved trying to insert the soul of a dead person into a new body. Basically, trying to raise the dead. Since humans are not Gods, they cannot retrieve souls, and shouldn't even try. That's why they paid the price.

Tucker's work involved fusing two living souls together. Since he already had all the materials he needed, he didn't need to open any door/gate.

I think Tucker got in trouble not because of what he did, but because he lied about it. The military were under the impression that he'd made a talking chimera with his awesome alchemy skills. The way he did it was just cheating and scaming the state, really.

Actually, i think i can answer that perfectly. Did you remeber the -

monsters that he had in cages? i think he used them as sacrifices instead of using them for the actual
Chimera. ed and Al didnt have any thing to use as a sacrifice, probably because they didnt
know they would lose limbs/bodies. i also wonder if you are talking about the end of the series
when Tucker wasnt even human anymore. he was attempting to use Al when he was in the form of
the philosphers stone.

[spoiler]I'm fairly certain Human Transmutations only refer to trying to create a Human soul, mind, and body. Fusing a human with an animal isn't quite the same thing, as you are taking to things that are already there and living and combining them, not creating a new soul, which would have erupted in Tucker seeing the Gate and the Truth.

Further on, in the Anime series anyway, I was under the impression that Tucker, being an expert on Chimeras, was trying to shape a Chimera that looked like his daughter, so he was just essentially genertically engineering an animal to look like a human, and then at the end he tries to use the Philosopher's Stone to bind a soul to it. The PS should allow these sorts of things. But, it didn't work, and he was left with a mindless doll that doesn't even qualify as a Humonculi.[/spoiler]

Hey, Ive got 3 questions. 2 of which are n00b'ish.

1. I'm pretty sure I know Ed & Al's Ages in the Manga, but I wanna make sure I'm right, so I figured I'll ask. It's like this, correct?:

Failed a Human Transmutation: 11 & 10
Ed Became a State Alchemist: 12 & 11
When The Storyline Begins: 15 & 14


Since up until a month ago I was mainly farmiliar with the Anime which has different ages and only owned the first few Manga volumes, I wanted to double check.


2. How many Volumes are currentley out in Japan right now? Also, how many chapters do those Volumes cover since it's likely the newest chapters (i.e. 69) have yet to be put into a Tankobon.


3. [Spoiler]I just got done with Volume 9 and am a huge obsesser when it comes to dramatic plot things. Is Lt. Ross really dead? I mean they had that whole thing going about hewr body being so messed by from Roy that you couldn't tell who it was except for dental records. So I just need to know, is she truley dead?[/Spoiler]

Currently Chapter 69 is the latest, and Vol. 16 contains up to chapter 65.

BTW, if you like, you can read English scanlated version up to Chapter 67 on Mangaviewer through our board.
To read them, Click on Manga on the left side of this page.
For chapters 35 and up, click on chapter 34, then click on the drop down menu at the top of the page, then scroll down the drop down menu to get to chapter 35 through 67.

I'll think about reading the Scanslations. But to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of that. I kinda enjoy waiting for new Volumes to release in America and see what happens next.

@Gozar - You got a strong will to hold out and wait for the volumes to come out in the U.S.!!

Though I don't think this is worthy of having a topic but does anyone know the North American release of volume 13 and 14?

I look all over the place and I can't find the dates...

Volume 13 is due on the 15 of May but volume 14 is not coming until August 21

These dates are according to Amazon, which is usually accurate within a week or so in my experience.
