He may not be as famous or as fangirled as his best friend Roy Mustang, but hey, how can you resist the lieutenant colonel's shoving photos of Elysia into everyone's faces, constant phone-hogging (and Flame Alchemist-bugging), and/or his cool push knives?

Hughes is so funny~ I think he gets a larger role in the anime, and I'm not complaining. He's always fun to pick on, always pulling out random pictures of his daughter at the most random times [; ...I laughed really hard on the flame vs hagane episode though when he uncovers this giant poster of his daughter and a teddy bear, LOL.

There's this other part where he like kisses this picture or something and Ed is like *falls over* but I can't find the screencap or an animated GIF anywhere :c

Hughes is the most loveable fma character... So sad he died... T_T

Yeah he's a colourful character, at times goofy, but he got serious when the times called for it.

I suggest that if anyone would like to talk about "what happens in the episode toward the end of first season" then I suggest to post that on threads that are dedicated on that talk, and not going over discussions on that topic on this thread. Reason being...

1. To avoid spoiling anyone who are still following the progression of season 1 of FMA anime.

2. So that this thread wouldn't get run over by "that" talk.

3. And, "that" talk already have several threads in FMA Anime AA subforum so having that here would become duplicate discussions.

(If that guy looks familiar to anyone in the least, it may be because he happens to be the best Kefka cosplayer ever. XD That was the cosplay we wanted to watch again)

Amethyst, I bow down to you for creating a thread dedicated to one of FMA's most loveable, loyal, and caring characters. I love Hughes' character not only for his rather colourful antics, but for his loyalty to all those that he cared about and his undying love for his family. I find him to be a really noble character; the friendship that he shares with Roy makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

CodenameElizabeth: Your friend's Hughes cosplay is great. He even has photographs in his hands ready to ambush people with!! (By the way, I love your icon.)

Fushigi: Wow, that video was true fandom to say the least. (I really don't know what to think.) The guy did an incredible job with the cosplay though.

And I have to say that it's impossible to hate Hughes *nod nod*. I have met someone on internet who didn't like him (I really don't know how that's possible O.o) but still didn't hate him.

Really, Hughes is like Rokka from Väinö Linna's Unknown Soldier. He's got the attitude, he can joke and make people feel better at all times, he just PWNs everyone and he is pretty carefree about ranks (bothering Roy who outranks him, nevermind that they're buddys) and some other cool stuff^^

What are we supposed to talk about with Hughes if we can't give anything away?

Well, I love the fact that he acts like a moron but he is actually one of the most skilled and brightest in the non-State Alchemist section of the Military.

I felt he didn't get to shine as well in the Manga, but you get to delve more into the past.

Without giving much away, the thing we are avoiding talking about, possibly the most heartfelt part of the series and possibly the most brilliant directed scenes in the series, both in the manga and especially in the Anime. Seriously, WOW.

Yeah, 'ear 'ear. (Guess who has read too much Potter-books lately... )

Talking about Hughes without mentioning IT is hard, but I think we can just dance around it somehow...

And that scene was beautiful, both in the anime and manga. Oh, the fall... *__* Such a beautiful arc...

Hughes randomness is something different from other characters. They normally stay on-topic but Hughes would start babbling about Gracia or Elysia. It makes him stand out more with all the others^^ He's also a great comic relief with those randomness-moments.

One reason why I like the anime as much as the manga - at least in the anime, Hughes had a bigger role, and not seeing him in the hijacked train in the manga was a bit disappointing for me. Plus, can't beat the time when Elysia was born. XD

Aw, c'mon, we can talk about Hughes a lot without mentioning too much. Like how he was daring enough to unveil that huge billboard in episode 13...and how he basically annoys the heck out of everyone but gets down to business when it's time for business...

Personally, I always found it a little cruel how the other characters got so annoyed with him showing off his daughter. I mean I can see how it would get annoying after a while, but there's no need to be rude about it. Then again, I'm the type of laid back person who just smiles and nods and tries to be polite as can be when people do stuff like that, soooooo..........

I think that I would still be a little shocked if one of my coworkers unvieled a twenty foot poster of their daughter or son-shocked, but amused none the less. Even though characters such as Roy complained about his behaviour, there is no doubt that they all cared deeply for Hughes. I reminded about the episode in which Hughes is murdered, and Edward, Alphonse, and Winry are riding in the train. Winry hands Edward a piece of Gracia's apple pie and proceeds to ask about Hughes. Edward responds that he fins the man annoying. Then you see Hughe's 'reflection' on the train plat-form waving to Edward; Edward is the only one who appears to see him. Winry asks Edward what he happened to see, and Edward responds that he saw nothing. For some odd reason, that part really got to me. Despite his odd antics, Hughe's really if one of FMA most loyal characters.

^Yeah, I'd be a little shocked too, but I dunno, it's just something that irks me a little in an after thought. But once again, it's mostly just because I'm a very polite person, and most of the charcters we saw Hughes show his pictures off to - Ed and Roy - can be very rude, especially if provoked. XD

Roy has the most reason to ever be pissed off at Hughes. XDDD Lol, the phonecalls...

Don't forget the 'get married soon' part he leaves.Hughes was always there for Roy,especially when Roy signed up for the military.

That was one of my favourite "Hughes lines." Roy and Hughes really do have a great dynamic between them. On one side you have Roy's sheer annoyance with Hughes, and on the other side you have two best friends who will go to any lengths to support one another. Hughes has the ability to bring out a different side of Roy. It makes me sad that he did not last longer in the anime. Well, there is AlterNazi!Hughes in the movie, which rather amused me. The irony of it was kind of sickening...

Alter!Nazi!Hughes was the cutest effin' Nazi I had ever seen. For real.

I like to think that he would eventually realize the Nazi party is not the way before Hitler gets out of jail, and has enough sense to take Gracia and leave Germany. I also like to think he runs into a Roy alter. >w<

And yeah I totally get what you're saying about irony. The way he throws his support behind people he thinks will save his country....but in this parallel world....

One thing sbout Nazi!Hughes tho...he makes for some interesting fanfiction.

Did you know in the movie he used to be with an Tucker Alter? O_O That creept me out..

MAES WAS A MUCH BETTER CHOICE. While Tucker could easily fit I suppose, Maes was just a better choice to put in the movie. I mean, the Maes fans love him. D: Maes is a fan favorite. Tucker is a fan hated.


and the idea of Maes as Nazi probably hit the viewers more than the idea of Tucker as one.

*thinks of Tucker being a nazi* O_o ...Whoa...I think Alter Tucker would of been a less threat if he was a Nazi.In the movie,he just hung out with Maes as one of the drunken guys.Without Alchemy,I think people would be safe with Tucker instead of the Tucker we know.

Tucker would make a fine Nazi, just not during that time period in particular. In a few more years tho... he could easily perform human experimentation on captive soldiers (Russians especially...) or Jews.

But in the time frame of the movie he'd just be a sniveling loser. XP Hughes was better! D:

Sadly, alter world Shou Tucker as a Nazi/Thule society member works out strangely well. (Gah, an awful fan-fiction plot just popped into my mind.) I am rather glad that he did not make an appearance in the movie; poor Edward already had enough to deal with. Having Hughes as a supporter of the rising Nazi party was bizzare enough. I wonder why Alter!Hughes took so kindly to Edward in the first place considering that Edward would have been considered the lowest of the low amongst Nazi supporters due to his disability and association with Roma. (Wow, I am making a stupid movie sound as though is was part of actual history...)

Alot of the Nazis seemed to take a liking to Ed. Probably because it was just the beginning of the Nazi party (Hitler hadn't even wrote Mein Kompf(?) yet) and Ed's a rather likable kid with alotta spunk (even if I don't care for him ). Some adults really take to kids like that, especially during a time of depression.

He never realized any of them were in the Nazi party till that one scene either. Kinda slow there Edward... XD
