ANIME GENRES

BISHOUJO 美少女 {bee-sho-jo}
A young and pretty girl in Japanese. A term that can be used to describe any anime that features pretty girl characters.
Example: Sakura in Cardcaptor Sakura

BISHOUNEN 美少年 {bee-sho-nehn}
A boy character with feminine figure. Often having long hair and feminine looks. Also called 'Pretty boy'.
Example: Envy in FullMetal Alchemist, Enrico Maxwell in Helsing

<ECCHI エッチ {eh-chee}
Anime and related art of an adult nature. Includes non graphic nudity and characters in revealing outfits. It is not hentai.
Example: Ikkitounsen,Love Hina

HENTAI/ H へんたい {hen-tah-ee}
Pornographic anime, manga and video games. Very erotic and highly explicit.
Example: -

JOSEI 女性 {doh-sei}
A genry of anime or manga created mostly to cater teen and adult female audiences.
Example: Gokushen, Kimi Wa Petto

KODOMO 子供 {ko-to-mo}
Specific genre of anime or manga that caters specially for children needs.
Example: Doraemon, Hello Kitty

MECHA メカ
Robot anime. Anime and manga that features super robots.
Example: Gundam Suit

MOE 萌え
Anime or manga that features extremely cute or perky characters.
Example: A Little Snow Faerie Sugar

SEINEN 青年
A specific genre of anime/manga for young male adults.
Example: Lucky Star, 3X3 Eyes

SENTAI
Refers to any show that involves a specific superhero.
Example: Ultraman, Kamen Raider

SHOJO 少女
Manga and anime aimed at a young, female audience. Usually stereotype and contains melodramatic stories of romance usually with a female protagonist.
Example: Fruits Basket, Glass Mask

MAHO SHOJO 魔法少女
Manga or anime that involves magical-girl stories feature young girls with superhuman abilities who are forced to fight evil and protect the Earth, and generally possess a secret identity.
Example: Rei Hino in Sailor Moon, Sakura in Cardcaptor Sakura

SHONEN 少年
Anime and manga primarily intended for boys, although there can be crossover appeal to females as well. Typically characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. Art style of shonen is generally less flowery than that of shojo.
Example: Dragon Ball Z, FullMetal Alchemist, Naruto

MAHO SHONEN 魔法少年
Anime and manga that have magical boys in them or the male counterpart of maho shojo or magical girl anime.
Example: Yami Yugi in Yu-Gi-Oh!, Kurosaki Ichigo in Bleach

TOKUSATSU 特撮
A genre of live-action entertainment that generally encompasses themes of science fiction and fantasy. May also be knows as HENSHIN 変身. Henshin superheros transform with special powers used to fight evil or corruption.
Example: Kamen Raider, Ultraman

SHONEN-AI/ BOYS LOVE [BL] 少年愛 {sho-nehn ah-ee}
Japanese for boy-love. Anime or manga that focus on romance between two male characters. Contains no homosexual sex scenes.
Example: Loveless, Getbackers

YAOI やおい {yah-oh-ee}
Anime or manga which include homosexual relationships between male characters. More intimate than Shonen-ai and often feature homosexual sex scenes.
Example: Fake, Selfish Love

SHOJO-AI/ GIRLS LOVE [GL] 少女愛 {sho-jo ah-ee}
Japanese for girl-love. Anime or manga that focus on love between two female characters. Contains no homosexual sex scenes.
Example: Kannazuki no Miko, Utena

YURI 百合 {yoo-ree}
Anime or manga which feature homosexual relationships between female characters. More intimate than Shojo-ai and often feature homosexual sex scenes.
Example: Strawberry Panic!, Burst Angel

ANIME EXPRESSION

FACEFAULT
A character falling over with a loud thud or crash after another character saying something anticlimactic or stupid. A character usually fall flat on their face or back, sometimes with their legs sticking up in the air as the only part of them visible on-screen.

SUPER DEFORMED
Used in order to show extreme or exaggerated emotion, especially in the cases of anger or surprise, that would be difficult to portray, or would seem out of character if expressed on the more realistic visage. They are meant to be cute and are often used in humorous diversions from the storyline.

NOSEBLEED
Happened often in shounen anime, boys will get nosebleed when sexually aroused.

SWEAT DROP
A response to a stupid or inane action or spoken line. May also indicate nervousness, especially when a character is asked a question he incline want to answer and also fear.

SUDDEN APPEARANCE OF VERTICAL LINES ON FACE
Indicates embarrassment or speechlessness in response to some absurdity.

SHORT VERTICAL RED LINES/LIGHTBULB APPEARS ON HEAD
Appear or flash above the character's head before disappearing, indicating that something has caught the characters attention or understanding.

THIN VERTICAL BLUE LINES APPEARS ON FOREHEAD
Often accompanied with a dark blue "aura"; Indicates that the character is ashamed, guilty, afraid or depressed.

FROZEN BY ICE
Indicates someone just said something out of extreme stupidity or one of the characters told a lame joke.

GIANT HEAD
Indicates a character screams his/her anger at somebody else. Two character's heads may take turns in alternating between a "giant head" and a normal head as they are having an argument, each taking turns yelling at each other.

BLUSHING
Happened on cheeks, blushes usually is red, purple or blue. Indicates someone in love or embarrassment.

LIMBS IN FLESH-COLOURED BALLS
Happened when a character is in irritation, impatience, confusion or loss of control, or occasionally, running away from something or someone, a character shakes his arms with her/his hands closed in fists, and they are shown as multiple flesh-colored balls with motion lines and no arms.

LIGHTNING BOLT
Indicates the glare between two rivals.

LARGE SHINING EYES
Indicates cuteness and excitement.

EYES SHAPED HALF-MOON WITH TINY PUPILS
Indicates a devilish intent, usually accompanied by a toothy grin, a flash on the corner of one of the eyes and sometimes the flat side of the eyes will form a V or
Indicates anger, usually the flat side of the eyes will form a V parallel to the eyebrows or
Indicates the character is totally uninterested in the situation, usually accompanied by a flat small line as his/her mouth or simply having no mouth at all.

FLAMES IN EYES
Indicates immense passion, usually accompanied by scared characters in background. May also indicate someone with rage.

HEART REPLACING EYES
Happened frequently alongside with the character clasps his/her hands indicates that the character is attracted to someone.

SPIRAL REPLACING EYES
indicate that the character is under hypnosis, or subconsciously attracted towards something as though he or she was hypnotized. These are also used if the character is dizzy or if the character is unconscious.

CIRCULAR WHITE EYES
Indicates surprise, shock, vacancy, a lack of intelligence or an instance where the character is "struck dumb".

PUPILS DISSAPEAR
Indicating shock, anger, or a bad pun.

RIVER OF TEARS
Indicate comedic anguish or discontent.

PULSATING CROSSED FOREHEAD VEINS
Indicates anger, rage or irritation.

Edward with huge pulsating forehead veins after being called a chibi.

CHIBI
A short person or child in Japanese. Also used to refer someone which usually feature huge eyes, an enlarged head, and small body.

SUDDEN APPEARANCE OF VERTICAL LINES ON FACE
Indicates embarrassment or speechlessness in response to some absurdity.

UPPER FACE BLACKED OUT
This shadow usually indicates serious sadness or shyness.

JAW DROP
Indicates a character in shock. Usually including exaggeratedly drawn teeth and feature a very large mouth.

LARGE EARS
Happened when the character hears a very interesting conversation behind his/her back.

BREATHES FIRE
Indicates the character eaten very spicy food.

RED FACE
Indicates the character eaten very spicy food. May also indicate huge embarrassment.

BLUE FACE
Indicates the character is afraid, shock or sick.

WHITE CLOUD PUFF
Indicates a sigh of exasperation, grudging acceptance, boredom, or disappointment.

THE SCREAM POST
Indicating fear or great anguish.

TURNED INTO CRACKED STONE/SAND
Indicates great emotional shock.

BECOMES MONOTONE/WAVY PAPER DOLL
Indicates a character in states of extreme stress or shock.

KNOCKED INTO THE AIR
A character will knock another character into the air when something stupid is said. In more extreme cases, characters sometimes fly off into great distance and finally disappear as a star in the sky when defeated in a duel.
