I didn't see this posted before, so if it already is, I appologize.
This is a topic to discuss Tim Burton's movies: which ones you like, love, which ones you own, which ones you've seen, your favorites, other things about his movies, etc.
Tim Burton's movies are so cool! I love the stop-motion movies! My favorite is Corpse Bride

! I love that movie so much! I love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

, and I like Nightmare Before Christmas, though it isn't my favorite. I've seen Vincent... it's not one of my favorites

I swear this topic did exist once, or at least a Nightmare Before Christmas one did.
Anyway bar Piwi's Big Adventure (can't get it my region) and Planet of the Apes (hate it) I have all the other Burton films from Vincent through to Corpse Bride. Not all of them are fantastic, but certainly his greatest pieces are the ones starring Johnny Depp.
Edward Scissorhands is probably my favourite film he has directed (keeping in mind he didn't actually direct The Nightmare Before Christmas). I do love his poems, but certainly with the Oyster Boy collection they can blend into one big 'emo' project.
Corpse Bride was good, but it did feel somewhat short. There seemed to be places where more story could have been. But it was nice to see animation other than cartoon and computer animated...there are so few now.
Frankenweenie is cute, and of course Vincent was the first of his animations, also depicting that certain Burton style of art. Set him on the road to the auteur he is.
Ed Wood is one most people forget, or may not even at first realise its Burton, but that is another good piece.
Like I said I only really dislike Planet of the Apes, which as much as it might have looked Burton-esque, he made it for Hollywood and not himself.

Hm. I need in on this.
Anyway, I've heard about Sweeny Todd,
And I loved Big Fish, The Nightmare before Christmas, Along with a few other classics.
Edward Scissorhands is a masterpiece.
Sweeny Todd Will be another Burton/Depp colaboration, correct?
I can't wait!
My mom seems to remember a short movie, something to do with a boy and/or a dog on a train or something. Familiar, anyone?

Funderful- Yeah, Sweeny Todd is supposed to be Burton/Depp.
I was thinking about Corpse Bride... *possible spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen it* (scroll down)
If Lord Barkus had stabbed Victor at the end of the movie (and Victor died), then Victor would be able to marry Emily. (I don't believe I'm about to say this, but...) I wish Victor would've died at the end(so he could marry her). Anyone else agree with me??

pirate-alchemist- I love Burton/Depp movies

! Those two are a dynamic duo! Actually, Tim Burton and Danny Elfman make a dynamic duo also.
I just saw
Edward Scissorhands on the bus to my field trip on Tuesday. That is a cool movie, but I didn't know it was PG-13, so I wasn't expecting those.... inappropriate parts of the movie... But I was confused during that movie because my teacher skipped two scenes, and all of a sudden Edward was being arrested and I had no idea why

... Wasn't it Johnny Depp's first movie?

^ It was what could be called his first 'major' role in a film, but he first appeared 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'. I also think heplayed a part in Platoon that was never shown or something like that. He became famous for 21 Jump Street and then Tim Burton got a hold of him and a beautiful partnership was born.

yes they do! I don't think I'm aware of watching and Tim burton film staring Danny Elfman, I'm not very good with remembering actors' names.
I thought it was such a sad movie, I couldn't believe it had such a low rating but I guess that's due to the fact that it's kinda like a fariytale and true fairytales are never pleasant. (sorry can't remember character's names, it's been a while since I've seen it) but did you see the part when the girl's brother is about to be run over and Edward saves the boy and lies him on the ground. Edward tries to check if the boy is allright but end's up cutting up his face and then all the neighbours come round and he gets arrested, I think that may be the part you missed out.
I'm not entirly sure it is was his first, the movie first came out in 1991 I think (well I was born then so I don't know) I think Nightmare on Elm Street was his first as I think that's earlier... I'm not about stuff that happened before I was born..

pirate-alchemist- I saw that part of
Edward Scissorhands. After the scenes skipped, the first thing I saw was Edward wearing a hat (which made him look weird, by the way

)and the police thought he was holding knives, and then they arrested him. Someone said he was stealing money from a bank, I think. But it still bugs me that I never saw that part...

To clear it up for you...
Kim's boyfriend needs money, and the best way to do that is claiming insurance from his father. The boyfriend had previosuly seen Ed pick a lock and not cause any damage and so gets Kim to ask Ed if he will help them 'get back something that was stolen from them' (a lie to get him to do it)
Ed does break into the house, but all the security comes down and locks him in the house. When the police arrive they de-activate security to Ed can get out. As Ed is walking out the police don't realise his hands are scissors and presume he has knives in his hand. Locals run over and inform the police its his hand as the police were about to shoot him down. He goes to jail but is let out on the basis he is 'mad'.
As I said Edward Scissorhands was Depp's first big role, and the first time he and Tim Burton first worked together.

Thank you for the info,
Chiyo. I understand it better, now

I watched Edward Scissorhands with my friend, and she pointed out the importance of the snow. I didn't realize that if it was snowing, Edward was still alive. Am I stupid?

BTW: Edward Scissorhands reminds me of a puppy, but he reminds me of a cat when he's angry. Does anyone else agree or (again) am I stupid?

Well, I would rather watch his "different" movies than watch an ordinary movie where either the people learn a lesson or fall in love and live happily ever after all of the time. I love how Tim Burton's films are "out of the ordinary" and different than any other films I've ever seen. I mean, really, a guy with scissors for hands? Only creative people can come up with that. Plus, making a movie about it takes a lot of persistence and imagination. And his stop-motion films just plain rock, like TNBX and Corpse Bride. And his "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was simply amazing and very original (way different and much better than "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"). Are his films strange? Yes, but they are interesting. Weird? Maybe; Depends how you look at it. If he wasn't "different", then he would be like any other boring director with non-messy hair and no imagination. Go, Tim Burton!

I just read 'Burton on Burton' and I have to say reading what he has to say is nothing inspirational. All he really does is moan about how he always felt like an outsider as a child so thats why he makes his characters the way he does. Bless him for making the films, I have no qualms with them...but boy does he know how to be depressingly emo.
And although his films may be on the odd side its nothing 'quirky' anymore, not as much as Edward Scissorhands once was. He needs to try something a little different and I suppose, in a way, Sweeny Todd will be just that.

I showed Edward Scissorhands to my cousin, and she said that she didn't like the ending. She thought that Edward should have gotten real hands and married Kim and lived together happily ever after. Personally, I think the ending was really good. The two of them getting married was unrealistic, mainly because, well, Edward will stay young forever. What did you all think about the ending? The ending was oh so sad. I agree that they probably shouldn't have gotten married, but to leave him up there all by himself was kind of cruel in my opinion. He made so many sacrifices to try to make everyone happy and was so misunderstood. They should have put some kind of safety guard on the scissors or something, or turned them into some kind of hand swiss army knife.

Chiyo, I am currently studying in the United States and they gave the movie and R rating which still means that all the angtsy emo children can still catch a glimpse of Johnny Depp hacking of his customers heads only if they are accompanied by good old mom and dad. I saw the movie in the theatre and thoroughly enjoyed it; Johnny depth did such an incredible job bringing the character of Sweeney Todd to life. (Some people may still think that he can't sing for s*%&, but I thought that he did a quite a good job.) Overall, I was rather impressed with Tim Burton's take on Sweeney Todd although he cut out one of the musical's greatest songs. I am sure that once is appears on DVD the little emo children shall watch in to their hearts content surrounded by meat pies and Johnny Depp merchandise.

Just for those of you interested Tim Burton is working on an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland with Disney/Pixar. It'll be cgi motion-capture (not stop-motion, sorry stop-motion fans) and they start filming in May. Expect it 2010.
He is also doing a remake of Frankenweenie in cgi, but with stop motion.
I'm expecting Alice to look like

I went to see Sweeney Todd for the fourth time two days ago (yep, it was the last time). So yep, loved it! : D Was waiting for this movie for months so I went to watch it a bit biased at first, even though I'd had my fair share of 'EW' comments about Depp's and Bonham Carter's singing performances. It all sounded very nice to me. And I just heart these two together on screen, they're so smexy pure eye-candy and the movie wouldn't have been the same if one of them hadn't been there, IMO; they did such a stunning job of bringing the characters to life, and the way they can go from dramatic to funny is amazing ('By the sea' = <3). I also thought the songs went very well with the scenes, in a way that we didn't get bored with them. The ending was perfect.
The movie was rated PG-13 in France. Personally, I thought the ratings it got in the US and the UK were really exaggerated, since the blood was obviously fake and most of the 'violent' scenes were more funny than anything. But I'm glad Burton didn't back up and kept it as bloody as it was supposed to be. Also, the wars about which version is better are retarded. Both musical and movie are awesome-sauce in their own ways, but too different to be compared (Just how can you compare Hearn's theatrical, hilarious Sweeney to Depp's much somber one? Nah).
Chiyo
Feb 18 2008, 03:50 AM
Agreed, now I have seen it I can only assume the 18 certificate was because the death of that one particular person was carried out more violently than the others, otherwise the gore is very brief as once their throats are slit they're down the shute.
I saw a BBC adaptation of Sweeney Todd a few years ago and I didn't think anything could top that. Sweeney Todd is actually a very old story and has a few variations. The one I loved (not a musical version) had Mr Todd love Mrs Lovett from afar and as far as I can remember when he brought her meat she had no idea what it was. It was dark, end of story.
Now a musical cannot be pure horror not matter how much it tries, but I don't think I've known Depp in a darker role. I love his version of Sweeney BUT in the context of a Burton musical. Had he played Todd in a regular version he would have looked like a poor stereotype. Lovett is another amazing character, quirky and yet takes everything in her stride, perfectly played by the naturally quirky Bonham Carter.
I suppose I have two real complaints, one was how long it took to really get in to the story with then the action feeling so brief. I know they have to try and include the love story but it felt a little tacked on, used just to add important characters. Two is the ending Throat slit, blood pores nicely so as to not ruin the painful scene, credits role. I didn't expect a more dramatic ending, but there is no follow up as to the characters who live. Its like all you need to know is Todds dead, sod the other characters they spent time telling you about
