No Greed ;_;

I SUPPOSE the awesomeness of this chapter makes up for it...

I just had a thought. What if Sloth's power is to slow/stop alchemic reactions. Maybe that's why Ed's alchemy didn't seem to have any affect. It's not that Buccaneer's automail is special it just a side effect of Sloth power. Or did they explain why? I don't know japanese.

A lot of stuff about Sloth confuses me. It seems like his power is some sort of super-strength, but he's got those CHAINS.
What purpose do they serve and why can't a super-strong dude just take them off? And why is a guy who's supposed to be
"working" (in the homonculi's words) chained up as he works?

^^ So far nothing is explained in the manga. We finally know how he looks, and that's about it.
(And, him grunting that all the stuff is cumbersome and doesn't want to do it... very Slothish, I would say.. tongue.gif ) I guess we all have to wait till the next chapter comes out to find out more about him..
Chiyo
I had put Sloth to the back of my mind, and then bam, there he is. I didn't quite understand, where is he in relation to the Elrics? Underneath their feet?
Nekokitty
This chapter was awesome! Greed not appearing was the only disapoinment for me. ;_;
Can't wait to see what happens next! Wonder what Sloth's gonna do....

They did explain why, yes. It's because Buccaneer's Crocodile is made from some other material.... (uh... what was it, again? Chrome? can't remember now sleep.gif) in order to work under such a cold climate.
Right after Ed understands why "Automail destruction" didn't work: because in the (very important!) first phase of alchemy, understanding, he assumed it was made mostly of iron like his, and so that was what he tried to decompose. Thus the failure.
Tombow
^^ Yeah, it says Buccaneer's Crocodile is made from chrome and carbon fiber and other stuff.
Also, he is using the oil that is of anti-freez type, and he even has some heating system around the shoulder to keep his automail from freezing, I think. smile.gif

I have a question : will Winry come in the North to fix Ed's arm? Or will it be repaired by one of the specialists at Briggs?

The specialist at the North Fort recommended Ed to get it changed by Winry. I'm hoping she will come to the North!! smile.gif
Sannom
Okay, if they say she "must" be the one to repair it, she will come (at least if that stubborn Ed dare to call her...). She was very worried in chapter 64 about the fact that he went to the North without seeing his automail mechanic...

Garfiel saying 'he'll die' probably didn't help calm her nerves either.

Actually I'm concerned (unless Tombow can explain), why does it need to be Winry? Its unsafe for her to be near them isn't it? It's like making a point that she is going to be brought out into the open.
Tombow
^^@Chiyo - The essanse of the conversation between the specialist and Ed in that scene (page 6) goes like this:
Note: For actual translation, please wait for the "official" scanlation to come out...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Specialist: "If you intend to stay long period in the North, I recommend swiching the automails." "To the one more suitable for this climate."
Specialist: "Do you have any particular engineer caring for your automail??"
Ed: "(She is) In the Rush Valley right now."
Specialist: "The customer is heading to the North, and didn't explain anything (about the effects of extreme low temperature), nor switching (to freez-resist) automail??"
Ed: "Ah, well, I didn't tell that I was heading to the North."
Specialist: "Well then, get it switched, even if making (your engineer take) the extra business trip."
Specialist: "If you don't want to die."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hope that helps. biggrin.gif
Chiyo
Ah thank-you muchly Tom-the-helper-bow. They are pretty certain to say he'll die if not, but it still seems they don't really 'need' Winry. Why can't someone nearby do it? Even if Winry does know Eds body better (restrains kinky follow-up)
Tombow
^^ I think the best would be if Winry comes up to the North, and consults with the specialist there, and make one for Ed.
I'm hoping Ed can use the phone at the Fort, then if (hopefully) Miles (that part Ishvalan guy... I like him!!) can go out to the nearby village or some place to get Winry, then probably she can safely arrive to the Fort.... maybe?? biggrin.gif

I'm actually getting irritated about the lack of Ling and Greed though. Why'd she remake him then shun him aside?

She didn't, it just isn't his time to show up in the story yet. Don't worry he will come back and when he does it will be great.

And I had a feeling Winry was coming North since the last chapter when she found out where Ed went. I just didn't see Arakawa adding that scene if there wasn't more to it. Or maybe it is just that I want to see Winry in a winter coat. biggrin.gif

Bah, this has been really strange since the beginning : Ed really needed Winry or Pinako to repair his automail. It's the best way to make Winry go where Ed is. Arakawa is an excellent writer, there is a lot of details in his manga, but there is things where the manga doesn't seem logical... and I like it laugh.gif

And there is one more thing : how can you expect people who creates automails like the Crocodile to be able tu understand the beauty of Winry's automails? laugh.gif

Wow, I've been gone a bit of a time- and it seems that the layout has gone and changed on me. Looks nice.

I saw the RAW a few days ago- since it hasn't been posted here yet, it deserves mention that there's a translation on Cynthia's Livejournal, a few posts down. Take a look, it's enlightening.

As for Sloth- I studied Dante (not from the anime, the real guy, and completely unrelated to having watched the anime, incidentally) last year, and am going at it again this year. From this, I've learned that the terms 'Sloth' and 'Slothfulness' are truly misused. The true word would be 'acedia' which is what I think Arakawa-sensei is actually getting at. Acedia is a sin of the spirit, the sin of failure to excercise your soul. The slothful are those who have never been able to bring themselves to love themselves, God, or their comrades, and just think that everything is 'tiresome.' Sloth's great strength seems an obvious reinforcement of this idea. Even though the physical labor is quite easy for him, he finds doing anything 'tiresome' to even the point where doing nothing is tiresome. It's a pretty miserable existence. The way that he fits into the story is also appropriate- someone like that is obviously not appropriate for tasks such as Greed's, Lust's, Envy's, or even Gluttony's. He's only good for forced labor. Where the chains fit in confuses me somewhat, but I hope that we get an answer soon.

As for where Sloth is in relation to Ed, I'm still a bit confused as to what happened at the end of the chapter. At first, I was under the impression that he had come up through the ground right at the end and confronted Ed, but now I'm not as sure. It's possible that he's somewhere else in the fortress, or that he isn't above ground yet. I'll take a close look once I see the scanlation (It should be out later today) and make a decision on the matter.

Anyway, I must admit that as soon as I saw the pipe under Briggs I thought 'Sloth.' It seems quite likely to me now that Olivier is a key, if unknowing/unwilling, part of both Bradley's and Father's plans. Her work no doubt will be a huge part of whatever Sloth is doing.

At the same time, it seems just as possible that the two are completely unrelated. If Sloth knew about the tunnel and the people there, I can't see why Father would have told him to come out or why Sloth would decide to go through the 'trouble' of meeting people- it'd surely be bothersome.

As for Winry, it's certain that she'll come up to Briggs soon. Ed already needs new automail, and I can't shake the feeling that a homunculus in the basement won't help the situation at all. tongue.gif

Scar and Kimbley will fight again, although it seems sadly short. It would have been nice for it to last a pinch longer, but it worked well as it was. Unfortunately, Yoki was in one of the cars behind Kimbley... Will our favorite conniving idiot survive or finally be cut from the storyline?

I missed Marcoh and Mei Chang this chapter, although I see them and a revelation about rentanjutsu coming in two chapters at the latest. Sloth showing up means that we may only get teaser pages of them in the next chapter, but I can't help but feel like they'll show up soon.

And, Tombow- thanks for the message! I hadn't realized how much I'd been neglecting the forums- I've been bothered with other things. It's nice to be back though! *hugs back*

Yes, hit the nail on the head, after Ed found out she might be in danger he called her, I believe Gring pointed out how foolish he was for doing that.

Hm?

No, no, Sloth hasn't appeared before Ed, that's for sure. I don't think Ed would be just huh.gif {'?' had this giant appeared in front of him... (or behind him for that matter. I mean, the guy's digging, if he had just dug a hole in the wall behind Ed, appearing all of a sudden, I'd think it would've been helluva lot more noisy and Ed would have at least gotten scared/surprised, not just gone '?')
No, remember what the cap guy just said: the noise's coming from under the ground.

That and the crack Ed notices (which is what makes him go '?') makes me think he's digging right under their feet. It's either that or somewhere around there. Very near.
And the 2 possible outcomes for the beginning of next chapter I'm guessing are: either he just goes on and this served only as character introduction (something like when Greed first appeared clearly... he didn't appear again until 2 chapters later), with them warning Armstrong about these possible "Drachma invasion" and the likes... OR, this is how it'd really get interesting, the ground collapses and we're headed to a rather rushed meeting of Sloth and the Elrics. cool.gif Now that'd be fun...

Here's me bet: They are unrelated. Sloth isn't going to Armstrong's fort, he's digging under it, digging the famous Amestris-sized Circle. And if he's digging under the fort it's not because of the fort, per se... but because that's also the frontier with Drachma, Amestris' northern border and, therefore, part of the circle.

And I don't think he's supposed to meet anyone nor come out at there or anything, he's supposed to do what he's doing: dig. And, as I said before, I don't think he has come out at all, he's just digging right beneath the base, so close to the point the digging can be heard and to the point that it'd make a crack on the ground.
I think Sloth doesn't even know what's over him at this point, he's just digging and digging and digging, more or less through the route Daddy told him to take.

My 2 cents smile.gif

EDIT: Oh, and welcome back ( n_n)/
Animeoldtimer
Sloth is an interesting character. I like the fact that he seems to be worthy of his name: "Ahhh
Tiresooooome
It's so tiresome
I'm gonna die
But
dying is
tire
some
toooooo" --Translation from Csakuras Livejournal.

Maybe his laziness will be a source of some humor in the story.

Well, I'm not sure that the fort has nothing to do with it. It might just be that it's where the northern border of Amestris is, but I'm not completely sure how far the tunnel under there extends. If it's a long way, then it could quite easily be part of the circle that he may or may not be digging under the country. I'm not sure if anyone's actually confirmed what Sloth's task really is- he's digging something, but I guess it's just as possibly a hole as a circle. If I've just been out of it, then tell me, but I'll be the hypocrite for a moment and say not to jump to conclusions. Hopefully we'll see what he's really doing soon. Pretty impressive homunculus, though. Although- I wonder how big he actually is? He looks big, but as yet we have no frame of reference for him.

Remember, people, Envy confirmed "The North is next" when chit-chatting with Marcoh over dinner.
Scars Right Arm
just to give you guys a heads up, ZOMGFTA's scanlation is out now.

i loved this chapter a lot. olivier (olivia?) is really starting to grow on me and i'm liking her a lot. i was kinda disapointed by scar vs kimbley being so short, but i guess it makes sense. the best part of course was sloth.

as nepharski said, the north is next according to envy.

http://www.readmanga.com/view.php?currtitl...p=049&img=9

the glowing circle is right on the amestris-drachma border (briggs), which is where sloth is and is currently digging. i imagine the rest of the array is complete and father is waiting for sloth to finish the north portion before he starts a war with drachma.

But I'm not "jumping to conclusions" either. I just stated my opinion, what I think is most probable. I'm not claiming it WILL be as I say, nor anything like that.

Here, lemme do a brittle little compilation of facts and fandom-assumed theories, might as well come handy. And by "fandom-assumed" I mean those theories and factoids that seem most accepted by us fans, at least to me, at least in the pages I use to check (which would happen to be this one and hagaren_manga community at LJ. Hmmm... long time not been @ zomgfta forums, come to think...).

What we know:
  • Sloth is digging.
  • Sloth is at the North, somewhere near (VERY near) "fort Armstrong" ;p.
  • According to Envy, "the North is next".
  • There are border squirmishes all around Amestris. Also 2 of them are proven to be purposefully started by the hommunculi: Ishval and Lior.
  • and this has not much to do with this chapter, but it does come out usually... Hohenheim is on some mountain range-y place (or similar), going to a place marked with an 'X' on a map, where, according to the local guide, "there's nothing in there".
What we guess:
  • Daddy & co. are creating a country-wide transmutation circle all around Amestris. While this one seems to be pretty much true, it cannot be stated as a fact because it was not confirmed by Envy when Marcoh said it (IIRC).
  • About that circle its five points match five border conflicts Amestris has had or still has. That'd be why the hommunculi started them all. Specifically:
    East-Northeast - Lior (and perhaps other rebellions around the area, which seems to be quite conflictive). Ongoing.
    Southeast - Ishval. Already completed.
    Southwest - Border conflict with... Aerugo was the south one? Ongoing.
    West-northwest - Border conflict with Creta (if that's the western one) Ongoing.
    North - Border conflict with Drachma. Started, but on stalemate due to the natural barrier of Briggs mountains (and perhaps because the circle isn't still "drawn" there too).
  • Also about the circle, what Sloth is digging might as well be pretty much the circle's lines indeed.
  • Hohenheim is on Briggs Mountains. It was also quite assumed that he was going where Sloth supposedly was (Sloth being in the North was another general fandom theory that just got confirmed, BTW), but this seems now quite unlikely to me, as he doesn't seem to be anywhere near the fort (what with the mountains being lower, without snow, calmer weather etc.).
  • Also allow me to add my classic ones: "homunculi can't do alchemy". Fact taken straight from the anime, the topic has never come out in the manga, neither confirming nor denying it. Therefore, factoid.
  • Same for "homunculi aren't able to reproduce". True it is that Al commented having read that, but it is from the same books that taught him homunculi were impossible to create/no homunculus had ever been succesfully created so... not a very reliable source, they are happy.gifU
And that's all folks for now. Feel free to add or correct from here.
Also, we could make a topic with them...

EDIT: typed fixos. I mean, fyxed tipos. Er...

Wow, I did not expect Sloth to be appearing so soon! Cool twist there, and heaven help the Red Shrimp who doesn't have his faulty automail fixed in time!

I'm liking Olivia and her crew more now, especially the medics and the half-Ishval guy(what's his name again?). Hopefully they'll be of some help when Sloth makes his entrance.

Oh yeah, now even Olivia wants to find Mei! She's becoming quite important! Wonder how long it'll take for her to show up again?

Where he's going is an interesting thing to discuss. It's obviously not northern headquarters, nor is it the 'Northern Cliff' or whatever we decide to call Armstrong's base. It was pretty clear that the locals were relatively familiar with those two places. It'll be somewhere of strategic importance, but I guess we'll mainly need to wait and see. Of course, we do have one place which is where 'nothing is,' and that's Scar's hut with the research notes. However, I doubt that Hohenheim noticing.

What we guess:
  • Daddy & co. are creating a country-wide transmutation circle all around Amestris. While this one seems to be pretty much true, it cannot be stated as a fact because it was not confirmed by Envy when Marcoh said it (IIRC).

Not only not confirmed, but Envy actually said that Marcoh was wrong on some points, but right on others, then confirmed that 'the North would be next.' However, Marcoh had only put forth that they were A: Making a transmutation circle around the country, B: Using said circle to make the stone, and C: The North would be next.

Logically, since C is true, and all A, B, and C are not true, A or B is false. Since in all probability it's impossible for even Father to clappy alchemy a circle that big, we can assum if B is false, A is false. If B is true, A is false, according to my earlier logic that one of the two must be false. Therefore, they are not making a Philosopher's Stone. So, B may or may not be true. It's possible, but not definite, although it is interesting to more or less permanently throw out the idea of another Stone.

  • Reading what you've written, it makes me think that perhaps Sloth is not digging a transmutation circle. The biggest problem is not the circle, but the fact that it's difficult to start a war over the Briggs with Drachma. What if, then, Drachma was able to enter Amestris easily with, say, a tunnel under the mountains directly into the largest fortress in the country? Unlikely, and definitely a leap, but still possible.

  • And that's all folks for now. Feel free to add or correct from here.
    Also, we could make a topic with them...

    As far as those go- Hohenheim might be headed further up into the mountains, but I agree that his destination is most likely unrelated to anywhere we've seen as yet.

    About the homunculi- I feel almost sure that they said somewhere in the manga that they can't, else Father might have them open the doors and see if he could use them as sacrifices. I'm not sure though.

    After seeing Sloth, I feel sorry for the guy, digging a tunnel with his bare hands. In particular, his quote, "tiresome... I'm gonna die, but dying is... tiresome..." might be literal, as he may be dying repeatedly as he does his job.

    Sucks to be him. I wonder how his first meeting with the Elrics will go...

    Great chapter! We finally get a better look at Sloth. And the Kimblee/Scar fight was pretty cool. Though, I have the feeling that kimblee might die, cuz one of the last things he said in the chp., was that "death was coming". I'm not sure if he meant his death, or what.
    Did anyone else, when reading the flashback part with Miles and Olivia, feel that Olivia is kinda like Roy? How she wanted Miles to work with her, even though he was half-Ishbalan (sp?), mad me think of Roy and how he wants his subordinates to stay by him, no matter what. Or something to that extent.

    I loved how Ed couldn't reach the Ice! Freakin' hilarious! And poor Al! his hair is now a short ponytail! lol
    I also loved the omake at the end with Sloth having Shikamaru's face! Now to wait a month...
