let's see ...51 episodes * 24 minutes each = 20.4 hours.

You learn some allusion to history and perhaps some info about 'alchemy'. Seems like something you could learn that in 5-10 minutes of reading wikipedia instead of spending 20 hours of your life. I wouldn't quite use this as a way of saying that fma is educational.

FMA is a cartoon for entertainment.

there are cartoons intended for education. however this is not one of them.

you could spend 10 minutes of reading, but reading isn't as fun as watching tv. you usually don't watch tv to learn.

refering to the person who said FMA wasn't educational,( for some reason "qoute" wont work for me) it might not be educational, But it is educational in other ways. for instance " Killing lives dont bring lives back, we should just live and be content while we can" that is educational in a way if you think about it. it might not be school educational but it teaches us something else. in my opinion at least...happy.gif;

Did you really need an anime to point that out?

It also tells us several other equaly subtle lessons:
1) Reincarnating your dead mother and expecting nothing bad to happen is dumb.
2) You can have a body made of steel and still be a wuss,
3) there will always be some smug git above in the power ladder (Ref: Roy > Ed)
4) There is no problem that can't be sloved snazzy gloves (an Eye patch will also add to this) (Ref: Roy)
5) Trying leads to missery or trans-dimensional travel every time.(Sometimes both)

FMA should be applauded for it's realistic world view.

Or people will soon learn that fiction != reality and that some of these so-called lessons that are learned in the tv series have no bearing on reality.

It's entertainment. Don't try to glorify it more than it already is.

Yeah, I like that!! biggrin.gif
Especially, FMA anime, I like catching an emotional rollercoaster ride with thrills and surprizes and all that while watching FMA anime, and not analyzing the "moral of the story" tongue.gif

I agree with Tombow. You don't watch FMA to learn you watch it to have fun, (and maybe sometimes cry.) Learning some things every ounce- in -a -while is just a bonus.

---------------------------------------------------------

<Merged "FMA in Real Event" thread with the following 5 posts here. 02/19/07 ~Tombow>

ETA: July 9
I have heard that some of the stuff in Fullmetal alchemist is based on true events, and alchemists.I have a few examples of this from some books I've read.
"Oroborous the serpent the devours its' own tail, is a dragonlike beast. It represents the alchemists' beleifs' that matter is in a constant cycle of creation, and destruction."

"The most noticable work left behind was a single page of diograms. One of which showed a serpent swallowing its' tail to for a ring,The phrase, 'The one is the all'
was inscibed in the circle."

(In ep.24, I think Izuma tells Ed, and Al "All is one, and One is All".Then in another episode she says' "The One is the All.")

Both quotes are from Time-life books.I can't say they are actually true though.

Does anyone else have anything examples, of Fullmetal alchemist being based on true people, and events?

Look up Hoenheim, Elric and the Flamel on Wiki. Make sure to look them up via the FMA article.

For some reason wiki won't work today on my computer.
But I think I know why you wanted to look up.
Nicholas Flamel:(if I'm thinking of the right person.)was an alchemist who was beleived to have prolonged his life, and his wifes' by using a philosephers' stone.
Elric:there was an alchemist who created a philosephers stone, who went by the name of Elric.
Hohenhiem:There was an alchemist named Paracelsus, whose birth name was, Theophrastus Phillupus Aurolus von Hohenhiem.
