A few things: I thought it was Archer who raped/allowed soldiers to rape Rose
Also, yes, as much as we may say that Izumi is a japanese name or whatever, she's whatever Arakawa wants her to be. It's probably unimportant, though...if we haven't heard anything exciting about Izumi's racial past yet, it's probably not going to happen.
@Nil-Chan: I seriously doubt that Riza's array is *too powerful* or that Roy copied it off of her back. I still hold to my theory that it's for Riza's protection for a number of reasons.
They are: 1) the obvious balance symbolism 2) the fact that Roy was already the 'flame alchemist' in the military before that chapter began, 3) Hawkeye-sensei would want to ensure that Roy wouldn't go all evil and force the knowledge out of her.
Another thing- although people rarely look at their backs, it's unlikely that Riza wouldn't know about the tattoo because 1) she would have gotten it at some point, 2) the burn is over the tattoo, she would have needed medical attention, and 3) I doubt that Riza's gone the five or so years after the Ishbal massacre without sex. She's just not the type, it seems...

That's one point I don't really understand in Chapter 58. During Roy and M. Hawkeye's (supposedly) final meeting, Roy has yet to become a state alchemist since he hasn't gone on to take the qualifications test. Then M. Hawkeye said that "it was too early for [Roy] to to be the 'Flame Alchemist'." I thought state alchemists were presented with their code names after they had passed the test? *Is confused*

That got me puzzled too, but I remember that Gran (in the anime) asked Tucker if he wanted to see his Sewing Life-title hand over to Edward. So it seems it's a sort of passing down thing.... (I know the anime and manga are different, but they do draw from the same source) Maybe Roy's father used to be the Flame Alchemist? (hey, that makes for nice fanfic )
On the other hand, what else would you call a fire alchemist?

I do think she knew about the tatoo. I mean, how would she get it? SOmeone drug her and put it on her while she was asleep? Nah, i don't think so. She probably knew she was getting it.

While we don`t really know anything about Riza`s past, it seems that she hasn`t really been relationship crazy nor has the time to have a meaningful relationship. And she doesn`t seem like she`s the type to just do it with someone that doesn`t hold profound meaning to her. I feel like she would be the type of person who would save herself for someone special, possibly even until marriage. And to say that someone who abstains from having sex with every other person is like a nun is offensive to me. Many people practice abstinence until marriage as an act of chastity in hopes that their lover will realize how much they love them. It does not mean they`re just prude.

I didn't mean to be offensive with the all nun thing at all, it was just an example and I could have taken many others, but if you took it that way. :shrugs:

Well, I didn't mean to make my comment a discussion about Riza's sex life... but, regardless, we can assume that she knows about the tattoo, especially because of the burn mark. She would have needed medical attention, and no right minded doctor would refrain from telling her about the crazy tat on her back. Even if they didn't, she'd have looked in a mirror to know what the burn looks like. Fanfic writers, you can pretend that she doesn't so you can write some steamy scenes about Mustang discovering Riza's tattoo, but the canon interpretation is definitely a yes.
...i still think that she's had sex, though...
I do think that it's interesting to look at Keoni's mention of the inheritance of titles. That was only in the anime, but it still leaves the possibility of Roy's father or perhaps even Hawkeye-sensei to be the true flame alchemist. Hawkeye was actually saying not that he didn't have the title, but that he was too young for it. "you shouldn't already be the Flame Alchemist" is a translation that would make it clearer.
