Well, I doubt they knew how bad smoking was for your health back then anyway. And as for Breda, I would assume he's still a decent fighter to get in, plus if they're in war they may be conscripting?

Breda's probably more of a tactician than a front-line soldier. Makes sense, with his chess-playing and stuff.
