Now, I kind of agree to your comments about how FFVIII is not a bad game. I do like it over FFVII. However . . .

QUOTE(Kyros @ Sep 7 2005, 05:23 PM)
I think you need to change the title to "Final Fantasy 9 was Godawful" because it sucked so much somebody coulda told me it was Square's last effort to avoid bankruptcy...and they would have FAILED!

Got proof? I like IX just as much as I like VIII, if not more. Perhaps IX appeals more to the older gamers because of the nostalgia factor. I do not believe it was "Square's last effort to avoid bankruptcy". If you want to talk about horrid games, there's always FFX-2.

Uh d00d...I never said that it was an effort to avoid bankruptcy. I just said that if it was, it shoulda failed because I thought it sucked. Sure, it was supposed to appeal to a more old school gamers, but it has nothing on the older stuff even. FFVI will forever be teh 1337357 old school rpg evar, and it was so much better than FFIX. FFIX was a big step backwards from the progress that Square had been making, and I know of plenty of people that would agree with me. The strongest enemy in the game was a stupid ball, and the last boss sucked. Kuja didn't last 5 minutes against my team, and I wasn't but like lv 60-65 maybe. I did beat him at like level 40 no problems at all, but I leveled up a lot to beat Ozma, who was a terrible replacement for the big crazy sidequest boss. The only thing I liked about that game was getting to see Garnet and Beatrix...they were so cute!

I never said that you said that. I was simply stating that if it were so, then I do/would not believe it is so.

I'd like to think of FFIX as a way to progress by going backwards, if you know what I mean.

I HATED FFVIII with a passion. The whole magic system was a horrible mess, I would have much prefered an MP based system.

I hated the repetitive summon sequences, the storyline was stupid and was tooo coincidental for my liking (oh we all used to live together as children and FORGOT which was a plot hole easily fixed by the.....GFs which for some inane reason make us forget memories).

Final Fantasy VIII is a game I hope SE remake, possibly for PSP, so it does not continue disrupt the solid line of good FFs, which ends at IX, before the X which was kinda...rubbish.

IX was very good, despite having a weak disc 3 plotline it held it together until then. It was very enjoyable, a good learning system (ala FF tactics), a good set of characters (although I mainly only used the main base party of Zidane, Dagger, Steiner and Vivi because it was the best hands down). The game also had a good conclusion other than the RUBBISH final boss. I rank IX on par with VII.

VIII on the other hand is a game that should be left in the SE bin (along with Unlimited Saga) until it can get a good remake.

D00d, the characters sucked. Some of them were decent fighters, and that was the only good part about them in the entire game! They didn't give any of the characters good personalities. As a matter of fact, some of them had little/no personality at all! I don't see how you could not like FFVIII. It was a hell of a lot better than FFIX. You talk about repetitive summons...well, the summon animations don't change in any of the rest of them except for FFIX, which was gaytarded cuz the shorter summon would mean less damage. I usually didn't bother with summons much on too many of the FF games, but some of them were nice like Knights of the Round and Diablos. Also, FFVIII had a cool storyline and an awesome cast. If I go by your standards of good characters then I guess they all rock cuz they are all good fighters. It also had the cool storyline of Laguna and Esthar and all that, which made the series take a new view since it had never really broken the story apart like that in any of them before. I also loved the junctioning system, which is probably the best system out of all of the Final Fantasy games. I had some characters absorbing lots of elements and immune to all/most status conditions. That was really nice since Malboros were harder than in any of the other FFs in FFVIII. I also liked the way the enemies were stronger depending on your characters' levels, which allowed come areas to stay hard even though you might have gone through them earlier in the game.

In terms of gameplay and mechanics it was a huge step up from VII. As Quitis said, it didn't take hours to level up your characters and their GS. In VII it would literaly take months to level up the materia. But I feel the story of VII was better. I personally got into the story and characters much more. Since these are "role playing" games, the idea is to get into the characters and story. If that doesn't happen, the whole game is moot. I found the story of VIII to be too strange for me. I liked a few of the characters, but the game felt too short and Squall was just too cold and distant for my taste.
