You most definitely have a point here. Too many fangirls (and note the girls bit here) hate the 'sweet' prototype.

However, I also agree with Edo-mame. Al is far from a 'damsel-in-distress'. He has kick-ass fighting abilities, alchemy, and the most level temper I've ever seen.

Like Tohru in Furuba (just to use the previous example), he has a great deal of maturity and strength. His optimistic attitude is a reaction to the sadnesses he's been through, and while it seems a little too nice at times, it's a great way of being strong.

I think that the show wouldn't be as good if we had an brother/sister realtionship instead of a brother/brother one, but that's just my opinion. I like FMA just the way it is. smile.gif

A lot girls don't like the sweet and simple girl sterotype because it's a sterotype. We admire those qualities, but when that's all there is to the character, it's get repetitive and boring. But Al is a well-rounded character, with depth and direction to him, so it's not just his niceness that makes him a lovable character.

I actually have a few picture of Al and when I show them to my friends they think he's a girl. But I like Al as a guy, thank you! biggrin.gif

If Al had been a girl, I think that Ed and Als adventure would have probably differed, not a lot though

Al couldn't be called useless, even as a girl. There's no way. He's so involved in the plot.

I found a doujinshi about this once.
If Al was a girl, my crazy Elricest obsessed friend probably wouldn't ship it.
I on the other hand don't mind it either way. *shot*

I'm pretty sure that if Alphonse was just a girl instead, that's all, the biggest difference would be Ed mourning his masculinity from getting beaten from his younger sister. laugh.gif

dammit!! you made me realize how sexist i am....
Al's ttly moe. but all girls are moe. so its WOULD BE boring. so al's a moe boy. which i love. of course elricest would be more popular...but too popular. an' I'll hate it. (like my edxroy fandom.) An edxman!win would make hagaren a shonen ai. meaning it never would've been anime.

Speaking of "Al as a girl", I have recently encountered a vast amount of femme!Al fanart and fanfic.

I really wish someone would explain the fascination of "genderswitch" to me... maybe I'm old, but I just don't get it.

What is wrong with writing fic of characters as the gender the author created them to be?
