i think that dante and hohenheim are embodiments of the philosopher's stone. that's why hohenheim is alluded to be immortal, and if you look carefully in eps 44, i think at 21:18- they show a close-up of dante's body. doesn't that look like the color of the philosopher's stone?

Because he isnt a zombie, he just found a way to lengthen his life through alchemy. The Hoenheim body is likely "Borrowed" Just like Lyra's is for Dante. Thats how he knew things from over 100 years ago and thats why Lyra/Dante said that he had spent too much time in that body and it must be reaching his limits and Hoenheim said "Indeed it has". Then he offered to tell her the reason her body was rotting. Its likely that they both use a similar method of alchemical "body snatching" to stay alive, but Hoenheim has perfected it. And the reason Dante wants the philosophers stone is to do a more perfect soul transfer that she wont have to keep renewing every so often.
And my guess is Envy is his "mistake" Since Hoenheim can transmute with no circle, so therefore he has seen the gate, he most likely has attenpted a human transmutation.
