Just what I was thinking. Automail might appear to be a great alternative to the RL equivalents, but one thing people don't seem to always grasp is the pain and danger which is involved. The scene of Ed's operation sees him in agony. And conscious. Aside from the fact that Pinako and Winry don't have the equipment of a hospital, I get the impression that for points during the surgery, the patient *has* to be semi-conscious in order for the limbs to be connected accurately to whatever part of the automail is the conduit between the metal and the flesh. We're told by Arakawa that automail works through electricity within the body. I think that automail has to be connected in some way to the nerve-endings. That would be incredibly painful to adjust to.
They actually did make a prosthetic arm that connects to the nerves, just like auto-mail, (I saw it on Oprah) except it was a bit primitive compared to the auto-mail in FMA.

In the FMA world, a lot of people were missing limbs because of the war. In our world, I don't think enough people are crippled in order for prosthethic limbs to greatly advance because there's not a demand for it. Which is strange, since FMA takes place in the past.
Thank you, Ms. Arakawa, for sharing this wonderful, enriching story that has affected so many of us!

Of course not! No way I love my body the way it is

Yes and No Yes: I would like to have a mechanical something, but like Alchemical said, I wouldn't cut off anything for it No: I wouldn't because of the pain, and it would never grow with the rest of my body

wow i was thinking about this a lot. yes i would have it, but i wouldn't cut my limbs off on purpose. the rehab is supposed to be difficult and besides, you have to pay for your limbs. still it'd be cool.
p.s. amalthea, wars are still going on around the world, even if you don't see it going on. iraq vets are suppossed to recieve medical care in 1 month, but some are being left alone for more than 3 years. sometimes, even when they do get help, they recieve fake limbs that does not necessarily match their body length and color. they could surely use auto-mail.

I agree. I wouldn't cut my limbs off on purpose, but I would only do it if it was a necessity for me to live.
