I don't get excited over dialogue changes either, but FUNimation does not rely on 100% accurate translations. FUNimation adapts the script to try to get the best lines, and the best lip-syncing, that they can without changing the original meaning. That's what a dub is for. If you don't like it, there's always the subs. In my opinion they've done an amazing job with this episode, and the voice acting was spot-on. Saturday nights at 12AM has been the best part of the week for me, but now the best part of the week will be Saturday nights at 11:30PM starting next week - 'preciate it [adult swim]!

is it true that riza's "uchi no shitsuke wa kibishii wa yo!" ("my discipline will be strict!") line was changed to "you won't be trying that again, will you punk? you've got a strict mommy now," or something like that, in the dub?

Yep. That's what it was changed to.

"punk"? have they watched the original (rhetorical question)? that's so incredibly out of character for riza hawkeye. i have a very hard time imagining hawkeye saying something like "gaki," which is more "brat" than "punk." riza hawkeye does not call people, or dogs, "punks."

Try to tell me which cell you're in once you get there. I'll come visit often. I think I'll be in the one down the second corridor to the right of the big red door.

It may be out of character, but it sounded natural coming from Colleen Clinkenbeard, and it was a more humorous line, which is most likely why they went with it.

yes... changing the integral core concepts behind characters for the sake of proving that they can is really humorous....

This isin't really something that can be debated.. if you don't believe line changes are ever justified, then that's a common and well-shared opinion. Obviously everyone who has watched the original would prefer it to remain the same.. that's completely natural. But I don't think FUNi intended to change any integral core concepts with that one line of dialogue; they just thought "you've got a strict mommy now" was a better adaptation then "my discipline will be strict!". Its unfortunate, but they're interested in maximizing the script to click with the broadest audience possible when put into english, and sometimes one or two things do pass through that might sound unnatural. Its not intentional, but they want the lines to have the same hillarious impression on an American as it would have on the Japanese when they watched, which isin't always possible with a direct translation.

I guess I've been accustomed to it, one of my other favorite animes, Case Closed, in no way resembles the original anime after FUNi was done with it. Every line of dialogue was changed in some way, every name changed, even key elements of the plot. At first I was really annoyed; actually, I am still annoyed. But then I look at the job they've done with FMA, and I'm impressed, especially relatively. I think its hard to appreciate the grass until you've seen the dirt.

Yep. That's what it was changed to.

I'm upset to hear that. I disagree with making radical changes in dialogue from transations. It's just too bad that they did that. It really affects the individual characters, but fortunately it shouldn't affect the overall story of the series.

My goodness I don't see how one little line changes a character, talk about overreacting.

Anyways I really enjoyed this episode, I was surprised by how much actual "story" we got since I assumed that the episodes would be the same as the two gaiden chapters in the manga which were purely for fun. Anyways I really enjoyed this episode there were so many great moments both serious and funny that it is hard to come up with just a few.

And on a side note I do wonder who that woman is.

*Sigh* Thus the death threats and whining commences. I agree that I did not like that line, but the "my training is strict" line was too short to be timed with the mouth movements. Although I couldn't believe she said "you have a new mommy now." I'm sorry, that was a bit on the scary side. I actually like the dub, although I'm a little less than thrilled that they made Riza A LOT more loose and relaxed than she actually is.
