Sophomore year means 10th grade, or the second year of high school smile.gif

First year of high school in the US would mean 9th grade, or freshman year. Unless you (wherever you are) have different years for high school...

In the UK (which is where I'm assuming Illuminating Darkness is from), you start Primary School at 4/5 depending on where your birthday lands in the school year. Primary goes Reception>Year 1>Year 2 etc all the way to Year 6 by which time you're about 11. Then you start Secondary/High School, which lasts for 5 years until you're 15/16 (last year of high school is caled Year 11, which is when we stop numbering years).
Then you start at college (if you want to go, it optional but free biggrin.gif) which is (I'm assuming) similar to the last two years of an American High School. Some schools give a choice of staying for another year, which is called 6th form or Year 12.
Then you go on to University (not free sad.gif) which is what most Americans seem to call College.

As far as the topics question goes, I'm 19, and would be in my 2nd year of University/College if I'd gone smile.gif

yep, confused the hell out of me when I first started watching a lot of American movies/TV shows. I be like "He's 18 and still in high school? The foosh?" I still don't have my head round the American education system. Isn't there like 3 types of high school BEFORE you go to (your) college?

Hmm, not three types of high school. It basically goes like this:
pre-school/kindergarten
Elementary school (grades 1-6)
Middle school or Jr. High in some districts (grades 7-8)
High school (grades 9-12)
College (4 more years)

I graduated from high school when I was 17, but a lot of people in my class were 18 at the time (I was one of the younger ones... happy.gif)

hand-made-city's got it mostly right, and I don't mean to burst your bubble but it really varies with different states and cities and even school districts. Where I used to live before I moved, we had elementary as grades 1-5, middle 6-7, junior high 8-9, and high school 10-12. It was a screwed up school system, tbh XD The standard is for high school to be your last 4 years, then go off to college if you choose to smile.gif
