Hughes's death was tragic, but i kind of saw it coming. He was the most loveable character in the series, so his death would pack the most punch. But actually Greed is my favorite death. Before that he seems to be this indestructible ass beating everyone. His death seems tragic because he was forced into a corner. His friends were all killed and his plan was ruined. He knew that the other homunculi would hunt him down, and he had to make them pay some how. Then Ed comes. He knows that the best way to end things is to die, and in this helping Ed so that he can carry on the fight. I think the one moment that shows Greed is actually good is when Ed kills him and then he asks where Al is. Greed just smiles and says, "He's in the forest. I let him go." This tells me he never intended to hurt Al at all.
Of course Greed was a homunculus, so of course he was going to die. The most shocking death in the series for me would have been Nina - that one was a big kick in the gut.

Like a lot of other people I was torn between Hughes and Nina..
I voted for Nina though, because well.. when you're in the military, there's already a risk of you being killed, and Nina didn't die in a very.. "common" way.. I wasn't as upset about her death as I was about her being turned into a chimera by her own father, though.
