Synopsis: A continuation of the confrontation with Cornello which leads to the uncovering of Ed's & Al's main motivation in the series. Ed and Al expose Cornello's true colors to the town, only to find out he doesn't have what they need. The brother's leave the town, a devastated Rosť not sure how to go on and the rest of the townsfolk demanding the truth from Cornello.

Characters in this chapter: (in order of appearance)
Father Cornello
Edward Elric
Alphonse Elric
Rosť
Various Brothers/followers of the Leto religion
Reole townsfolk
Reole Food Stand Master
Reole Food Stand Regular Customers
Lust
Gluttony

This is the first time appearance in the series for this character: (in order of appearance)
Lust
Gluttony

Locations in this chapter
:
Reole(Leore)
Elric house(flashback)

Memorable quote/dialogue/caption from this chapter:
Ed (to Rosť): "Stand up and walk. Keep going forward. At least you have strong legs to take you there."

Ed: "All we wanted was just to see our mother's smile again."

"He made wings out of wax so he could fly, but when he got to close to the sun, to God, the wax melted and he crashed to the ground..." (also in the first chapter)

My thoughts:

I always love when Arakawa brings up the Icarus Syndrome. If you look (final chapters reference)you can even see it in the end with Father. He wanted to be the perfect being, to be a god, and, oh, how he fell.

Aww, the flashback makes me wonder how far Hohenheim has traveled.

Oh, the reveal of the brothers' motivation!

Ed is so harsh on Rosť in these first chapters; Al has so much more finesse with persuading her to give up on bringing her boyfriend back. It's nice that we already get to see how different the brothers are in these first chapters.

Chess metaphors! biggrin.gif Which brings me to more similarities between Cornello and Father: neither of them care about their "pawns" as long as they're good little pieces and follow commands.

Also, lol @ radio broadcast hijacking...Ed must have given Mustang a tip about controlling the radio.

Again, Cornello and Father similarity: "As long as I have this stone, I can make miracles again and again." (though, Father has the edge with a real stone.)

And a nice creepy entry for Lust and Gluttony!

I'm glad I got here in time to notice the re-read going on. I only have the first two English volumes...but I might have to buy more to keep up my collection as this goes on. biggrin.gif

Besides what Causmicfire brought up about the Icarus Syndrome, one line of Ed's got me thinking. It was after Ed hijacked the radio and Cornello tried to create a gun, but failed: "It was just a rebound!! Don't make a big deal over one or two arms!!" (page 85). I never thought about it before now, for whatever reason, but what Ed and Al experienced trying to resurrect their mom was an alchemical rebound, and they lost more than just a few limbs. It's definitely a personal thing for Edward, and we're shown that he never really focused on getting his arm and leg back--it was always about Al's body. Kinda interesting, I think.

Cornello was like that too. He wanted to take over the country, and that didn't exactly happen...Ed, Cornello and Father: the Icarus trio, lol.

Anyways...

How do you guys think the fake Philosopher's Stone was created? Was it actually a fake, or did it just not have enough souls? In the same train of thought, how were the homunculi created (other than Wrath and Greed 2.0)? I know Arakawa-sensei never really tells us, but have you guys any theories?

Page 5 (of this chapter, not the volume): We see Al's armor before his soul was put inside. And is that a Mew in a jar? xD

It's interesting how nobody in Lior knows much about alchemy, despite people knowing who the Fullmetal Alchemist is.

I much prefer how the final showdown between Ed and Cornello goes in the manga than to Brotherhood; in Brotherhood Cornello turns into some Incredible Hulk and is all like 'CORNELLO SMASH'.

When Lust says something to the lines of "Our plan is ruined *sadface*", what is she referring to? What was Father's original plan for Lior?

It was probably one without very many souls...

Yeah, I keep going back and looking at that details on page 5, especially the Mew in a jar.

Hmm, that is odd. Maybe it was because they had 'miracles', so they didn't need alchemy. Also, throughout the series it seems that alchemy is well known, but not practiced by many. Maybe it's hard to come by books with the proper explanations and/or teachers. Ed and Al had to go to Izumi, and their Father being an alchemist gave them a leg-up on the reading materials. Roy had his own teacher. Armstrong mentions that his technique has been passed down the Armstrong line.

Also, news of the Fullmetal Alchemist was probably plastered across every newspaper in the country once it was made known a 12-year-old received his license.

My thoughts on chapter 2:
The prologue in the first chapter was extended, Arakawa gave more details about the Elricís human transmutation. They tried to resurrect their dead mother, and Ed lost an arm to save Al. And itís also revealed that the transmutation failed, the thing they brought back wasn't human.

The ones who get too close to God will fall. This is another important quote which goes through the whole story. Thatís why I like how everything began in Reole. Many things were introduced here, but at first reading we didnít know that theyíll be important later.

I like Edís style when he transmutes objects, like the spear in the first chapter, or the door and the blade in this chapter. His facial expression when he transmuted his automail on p. 14 was hilarious! laugh.gif

So, Cornelloís evil plan was exposed thanks to the brothers, and the Philosopherís Stone turned out to be fake. Poor Ed wasnít very happy about it...
I was also wondering how they could create a fake Stone. I agree, that the most plausible theory is that it didnít have too many souls inside, and when Cornello used all of it, it simply broke.

At the end Ed encourages Rose to stand up and keep going forward. Thatís probably my favorite quote from this chapter.
At first I didnít like Roseís character, but Iím glad she took Edís advice and became stronger in later chapters.

The chapter ends with the introduction of two villains, Lust and Gluttony. And the first mention of Father, so we know that thereís someone else behind them.

@Tombow: Not to be nit-picky but you wrote "Notable chapter information for chapter 4" in post #2. ^^
<Oops! *goes to edit* ^^ Thank you for the correction!! Appreciated!! happy.gif ~ Tombow>

-----

These were two violent first chapters!

Maybe Father's original plan was to shed blood in Reole/Lior by using Cornello's "pawns" to war or something...But Edward put an end to that, so they made a new plan and sent in Bradley's army to mess things up.

Official Kitty Count~
Kitties: 2
Possible Kitties: 2

It is possible that that is not a kitten in a jar, if any of you think you can identify the specimen, feel free to post. I only suspect it is due to the shape of it's head, and having ear-like bumps on both sides. I thought of the Pokemon Mew at first glance of it. >w<

^ Zoomed In^

It is possible that this is also a cat peering out of the window. I make this assumption because of the curving arch on it's right side. Or it may be a chibi-drawn person. Until confirmation, it could be either one.
