Arakawa does draw fanservice, it's just so well put that you can't complain. ^^

Umm... How did Ling-Fan get it worse? If you look at the picture SHE"S RIGHT NEXT TO HIM. smile.gif Yup, look closely she's right next to his throne.... that kinda represents that she's with him 24/7. Huh, I guess your imaginations can do the rest biggrin.gif
Yeah, she's next to him. As a bodyguard. When he is THE emperor, the one which will take many spouses to deliver his many kids. Hardly a normal relationship. But they knew that was what was going to happen from the very beginning, so it's not as harsh as it would be otherwise. If Roy and Riza's was such a case, it would be a tragedy, because theirs CAN be a different story.

I made a few icons from the last chapter, hope you like them: (Posting them as links, to be safe.)
Royai 1
Same icon, 120x120

Royai 2
Same icon, 120x120

Hayate puppies 1
Hayate puppies 2

As for the manga ending: I’m with those who wanted more scenes with Roy and Riza. All interaction we got is the ”Did he win? Yes.” dialogue. I think they deserved more than that. I wanted to see at least Riza’s reaction after Roy got his sight back. Or a scene right after the 2 years timeskip.
I’m happy that they’re still together at the end of the story. Their future is left to our imagination, but we all know that after Grumman retires, Roy will be the next Führer, and Riza the First Lady. biggrin.gif

I still hope that we’ll get extra scenes with them in the last episode. Bones ships Royai, so I see a chance for that. We’ll know it in 2 weeks. ^^

Ahh look! I've found this thread... how did I not find it before?

Well, I think I've finally sucked it up and accepted that this was the end, but I still have to admit to a certain disappointment that this was all they got in chapter 108. I am glad that they weren't saddled with kids just yet (ugh, that EdWin pic comes to mind) as I am not a fan of characters suddenly showing up with kids without explaining what happened in-between that time. It feels too much like the end of the road- like a dead-end. Hughes is an exception because he wasn't a main character and he was just a natural at being a dad!

Since Roy is not Fuhrer yet, he and Riza are obviously still carrying on as they always did, but why did Arakawa decide to show THAT instead of a scene where Roy is Fuhrer? That's what confused me... because that's what Roy's goal was all along, and he's the only character from that collage that still had unfinished business (at least from what I can recall of that collage). It makes it feel as though there should be more. And I certainly wish there could be a side-story, but that seems unlikely right now... sad.gif

Although I wished for more Royai, I really didn't need any 'special' moment between the two in the chapter. What I needed was more appearances in the chapter. What bothered me more was the fact that Roy had a tiny little scene in there, and Riza had a couple of pages panels. That certainly didn't feel like enough, for characters who had played such a big part in the recent battle. I would have prefered for them to be together during those times... both when Riza was getting treated by the doctors and when Roy was discussing getting his eyesight back. Those scenes could have easily happened with them both present... So yeah, my main gripe is their lack of appearances in the chapter. I can live with it though. They'll always be my OTP, and they've had plenty of wonderful moments in the past, so I am happy that they're together in the end, in whatever capacity that may entail! My mind can fill in the blanks on what happens in the future.

Well, don't feel bad already: the last volumes are not out yet, and God knows what will be in those. New omake are a given, of course, but there can be a gaiden too. Let's calculate the number of pages, maybe we can find out that way. wink.gif

Sigh, with Episode 62 I don't think I should expect anything in the remaining episodes.

I will admit it: When I first read chapter, I was somewhat disappointed. Not just from the lack of Royai, but of the limited appearances of Roy and Riza themselves. I think it would've been nice to see Riza's reaction when Roy got his sight back, or to see a scene with them working in Ishval. I was never really expecting anything big in terms of their relationship to come out of the chapter, but I was expecting to see more of them. I mean, we know what they're doing at the end, but we don't get to see it.

...Complaining aside, I have to say I rather like the ending. Them working together to rebuild Ishval seems rather fitting to me. And I'm sure when Grumman is ready to step down as Fuhrer, he'll get Roy to take over on the condition that he gives him some Grandchildren to play with first. XD I do like the ending, I just wish we could have seen more of it.

I do like the way Arakawa ended the manga. I really do. And as someone who writes and illustrates my own stories and takes it very seriously, I see Arakawa as the type of writer who isn't concerned with "pleasing the fans" but with telling her story, her way. The level of characetr development she giver her characters, even the minor ones, reflects just how much she cares about her characters. And every time I re read chapter 108, I see something I missed before.

I am a Royai fan though. They're my two favorite characters, and the first pairing I've ever really shipped. And while I do like the circumstances they ended up in (I really like that they're back in Ishbal), I would have liked to see more interaction between the two. Hopefully we will get some in the anime smile.gif But I don't think they should have ended up with a family. Honestly, I can't see them having kids. Riza's line (not an exact quote) "We the adults have to shoulder corpses across a river of blood to make a world for the ones who come after us" tells me that she and Roy wouldn't want to have a kid, necessarily, at least not until all their struggles were over, which is unlikely to happen while they're still of a childbearing age. I actually even have a tough time imagining them married. But they do love each other, and I think they will spend the rest of their lives together, perhaps even living together, but their love is not romantic or passionate, it's more of a quiet, comfortable understanding. It's actually a lot like a couple that's already married and has been for a while.

Anyway, rant over, sorry that was so long o_0. I am hoping for an extra scene in the anime between Roy and Riza, but I won't die without it. (but I really do want it!)

EDIT:<strike> Okay, maybe I'm slow, but I just noticed that in the picture at the end of the manga, Roy has a full gold bar with 4 stars on it on his shoulder. That means he's Fuhrer in that picture with Riza. Just so you know smile.gif That made me incredibly happy! </strike>

EDIT AGAIN: Never mind. It's 3 stars and the little snap at the top. sad.gif That does mean it's not a picture from the past, though, so that's confirmation that Riza has cut her hair again.

I like to think because it leaves all of us Roy and/or Riza fans a lot to imagine. She gives us a rough outline on what they are doing in the aftermath, let's us know they are still together. Those fans who write can take it any place they want to. Think of all the great fan created story possibilities. Look at it this way, with Ed and Winry, sure there are stories still to write - but she's basically laid down a lot of information including the fact that they have children, and Ed apparently can't use Alchemy. That sort of limits the amount of "canon" based futures there can be, whereas Roy and Riza's in a lot of ways are wide open.

Think about the epicness of the possibilities left open by the conclusion. Roy makes a deal with Ling in Xing - so he's got ties to the top of the Xingese government, he's working on rebuilding Ishbal, he's been given a promotion to basically one level below Fuhrer. Roy and Riza's storyline is connected to the highest levels of at least 2 countries, plus Ishbal which is in Amestris but sort of a seperate people. Think of all the intrigue and the danger and all the characters they are connected to in important ways. Tons of possibilities for really rich future stories.

It is actually 4 stars, however that doesn't represent Fuhrer that means he is now a general wink.gif

No, 4 stars is for Fuhrer. It's the number of stars Bradley wore. Roy has three stars in that picture, so he's a rank below Fuhrer, which I assume means he is a General.

Is this where Royai fans enroll into therapy? I know I sure need some... +_+

Despite the fantabulous ending for everyone (I mean it seriously waaay happier than I expected the manga to end), I was really disappointed at the lack of Roy/Riza coverage. I'm seriously envious of the Royai fans who are able to see the silver lining above the given ending but I'm just bummed really. Honestly, Royai babies would have shocked me to the core and put me off so I wasn't really hoping for major Royai PDA and stuff. A nice little conversation b/w them would have suffice. Considering how they have been built up throughout the series, I did expect a little more closure for their chracters. Truth be told, I wonder how the whole team just got swept under the rug. I miss the rest of the boys in the team too....

Ok complaints over... All in all, awesome manga! It's got to be else why am I feeling such pangs of anguish...? =P

I was disappointed that Riza cut cut her hair, but I guess it works better with the heat in Ishval.

@elesstia: Welcome to Royai therapy... and the forum. happy.gif I'm with you on the whole "envying others who can see the silver lining". I'm trying to see it, but I just can't get it. A scene with both of them in the same room probably would've made me happy. They wouldn't have even needed to exchange dialog. A knowing look between the two of them would've worked. Agh, there I go again, changing what I want. But no matter how it would've turned out, we'd/I'd probably still be asking for more. :/

Geared towards animeoldtimer's post: I think my eyes almost popped out of my sockets when I saw Riza's hair was cut. I was seriously thinking, "No way!" and I was skeptic enough to lean in super close to my monitor cuz I thought it was a fluke or my eyes were playing tricks on me or something. Needless to say, I wasn't happy with Riza having had chopped her hair off, but I guess she had her reasons- be it Ishval or some other reason that most women have when they do something drastic to their appearance.

But on the upside, I'm digging Roy's hair. When it's slicked back like that, he looks really... cool. Serious. Handsome. I dunno- he just totally rocks that look tongue.gif

It's kind of silly how much I like that look on him. smile.gif He looks all those things and elegant and refined too but still as kickass as ever.
