Just finished watching the sub. I didn't think it was that bad of an episode at all. The fight scenes were done excellently. I also liked Ed's huge rant to Greed (and Greed's subsequent clapping). The only thing that I really wanted but didn't have was the thing with Greed consoling Al because he thought Al said that Ed was dead. Greed's character was established well though, he had a good voice and animation.
If you take out the fact that Yoki was previously not introduced correctly with the coal mine, I think they did a perfectly good job of establishing his character this way. He's a weak, pathetic, greedy sellout who dislikes the Elrics for some reason, and that's all we really need to know. Who knows, they might even reveal sometime later the actual circumstance behind it (not a whole episode though of course. They could probably summarize the entire coal mine story in 30 seconds with a few funny pictures and a little narration by Yoki).
I do wish scar's attacks would have more of those zesty alchemy lines like they did in the first series. Right now he sort of just touches them and their body parts blow up randomly.
From the preview it is obvious that Armstrong and Bradley are going to be in Dublith, so instead of complaining about the lack of context/reasons right now, I'm going to postpone judgment until seeing the next episode where their presence in Dublith will be explained, somehow. But either way they missed a classic "melon" opportunity...
My biggest complaint is the soundtrack - in this ep we heard so much of the same old themes thus far and none of it really impresses me *at all*. The fighting track is good I think, but everything else is getting boring hearing the same stuff every single episode.
