My first impression is that it's pretty much what I expected, a sped up version of chapters 8 and 9 of the manga. I liked the bit with Ed looking over Winry's shoulder while she was working, though. I guess EdxWinry fans can do something with that. Overall, nothing spectacular, much like those chapters. As for versus the first series, I have about the same feeling. I think the first series had a good bit with Winry shining the light, though, that wasn't here, but I didn't miss it so much as to ruin my viewing.

Actually, I'll probably be sort of bored with the next few episodes, since I've seen all of this animated before. Somebody wake me up for Greed.

One thing: Armstrong made this episode~! Really, sparkles ftw xD
Ah, well as always I didn't understand much but still this episode made me smile. I liked this reunion. Pacing was just right, everything felt okay. Music...as always amazing. Most of the scenes were directly from manga so I am happy. It's really getting better and better. I like this new Winry^^
Next week: Denny, Maria, Sheska and truth about philosopher's stone~
Now waiting for the subs~

Ed watching Winry over the shoulder was so cute! >)
Scenes which are directly from the manga = total absolute WIN.
I need to see it again to comment coherently, especially when the subs are out wink.gif

Honestly, this episode wasn't as bad as I feared knowing that the two worst chapters to cram together into one episode (IMO) was crammed into one episode. I was surprised to find that the pace wasn't too rushed, which I think was a function of a bunch of material being cut. That was the downside- some of the cut material were either my favorite or fairly important scenes, such as everyone at East City HQ opting out of escorting Ed and Al home (that always gave me a laugh), most of Marcoh and Lust's encounter (and his attempt to finish her), and that brief flashback of Ed and Al burning down their house. Although I guess they could always show that again in the later flashback with Izumi.

Anyways, a few thoughts:

- The humor continues to be left intact! Al in the boxcar with the sheep was the most priceless thing to see so far on the show XD. I liked that they kept the little montage of Ed, Al, and Armstrong seeking Dr. Marcoh. There were so many familiar manga panels that just kept popping up.

- The music in the first half felt a bit off to me in some places. It felt a little too ominous for my liking.

- Missed seeing Marcoh try to be badass and kill Lust. Now I'll have to wait many more episodes before he does anything like this again sad.gif

- Winry's voice is very high, but I suppose I'll get used to it.

- The scene where Ed disrupts Winry at work was unexpected, but as an EdWin fan, definitely welcome <3 Speaking of EdWin, there were a few subtle but fanservicey moments, like when Ed slightly blushes after she tells him that he needs to get to Central soon, and when Ed is leaving and scratches the back of his head. At this point, I think you can tell that Ed acts differently around Winry and treats her differently from other people too, which is just enough. I like that the romance here isn't exaggerated or over the top-- it's very much like in the manga, which I approve.

- I was wondering what they were going to do with Winry's missing piece after the episode ended, and was pleasantly surprised after the ED. I thought it was the perfect presentation-- in the manga, this scene always felt like a bit of an afterthought, and having the animators place that cute little scene after the episode ended was pure win.

Overall, I have to say I'm satisfied with this episode. I'm not thrilled with having a lot of material cut out, but judging based only on the quality of the episode alone, it was well-done. To use a silly analogy (because it's late and my brain can't think quite clearly anyway), it's kinda like making a tank top out of a ballroom gown. The new product is gonna be underwhelming compared to the original, but is cute and lovely on its own merits all the same. Anyways, I'm definitely looking forward to the next episode when we get to see Denny, Maria, and Szecka smile.gif

They've really got to get rid of some of those pieces of music, like the instrumental version of that one song, which sounds like some vague European tune. It sounds like they're being served at an Italian restaurant half the time, and I want to rip my ears off. Just stick with the vocal version. None of it is even half as good as Oshima's score.

Wow, I've already watched this episode twice, and enjoyed it much biggrin.gif

-the pace was simply perfect, I haven't imagined that they would succeed in that, and what's more, the events in the episode weren't rushed o.o (well, as far as I remember, only scene with Lust was cut out and some flashback bits)

-Ed broke his record and slept three times in one episode (aww, drool)

-The scene with peeking through Winry's shoulder was funny

-Armstrong is awesome. Nothing more to say

-Well, music was okay, I guess. I have nothing against that instrumental one.

That would be all of the positive aspects (I think I haven't mentioned all, though)

Now time for negative aspects:

-Animation was bad at the times (Den eating - repetition of a few scenes), characters barely blinked (but not quite) - but at the other hand - I love how Ed struggled to walk with normal prostethic

-They still omitted the burning of the Elrics' House : < (and Youswell :<<)

And I guess that's all. I'm waiting to watch the episode with subtitles

Due to the cancellation of the end of FMA, Kasumisty must think of new signature.

It may take a while.

Honestly I think they are saving the burning house scene for another episode. I guess I can't say which one because spoilers but for those who read the manga think Vol. 5 and pocket watch. And if that's true I don't think it's a bad idea because it will add more to the revelation of that scene. Not to mention the burning house scene is in the opening.

Anyways not a bad episode. Like others I am disappointed at things they cut but the episode still worked and flowed well without those scenes. I also didn't think it felt rushed which is what I feared.

Loved that Edwin addition so cute. And I also was happy they kept the Ed with his stomach exposed scene (very important to me).

edit: Actually I just re-watched parts of the episode and I am pretty sure they do mention that Ed & Al burned down their house (well you can see Ed standing by the rubble of his house).

I haven't really seen the first anime so I have nothing but the manga to compare this to. har. In the manga I thought this part was kinda boring, but animated it doesn't seem so bad.
I wanted to see Marcoh vs Lust, this episode kinda lacked action (not that it's a bad thing), but I wonder if they'll show it some other time. Though I guess it's not totally necessary or anything...
I thought Winry and Ed's peeking and 'Is it done yet?' was really cute and funny. :D
Oh, and I thought this week's 'Fullmetal Alchemist' voice sounded especially horrible (during Winry eyecatch). I was *okay* with them until now, I don't like that guy saying it so unnormally. D:<

From what I've seen in the first anime Scieszka kinda annoys me, but I'm still looking forward to seeing her next ep anyway, because she seems okay in the manga. And Denny and Maria, yay. :DDD

Btw whoever that creepy guy in the preview reminds me of Hawkeye's father :<

Ive gotta say that I was a little bit worried about they mixing the dr marcoh episode with the winry one but it turned out to be ok, the pacing was fine not rushed as I thought it would be.

I loved the music, specially when marcoh was talking.

And of course I loved when Ed was watching over Winry happy.gif . I hadnt realized that Ed's hair was really really long, much longer than from the last anime, it really suits him this way.

Armstrong rocks laugh.gif

As others have posted, I think the flow of the different parts went fine. In fact, Ed was eager to get to Central to find Marcoh's research notes, and hence Winry worked day and night to complete Ed's automail in 3 days. The story connected fine, IMO.
Pinako's dialogue shines in this episode, IMO. She is a woman of few words, but when she speaks I thought her words were showing full of her "gruff outside, kindhearted inside" nature. happy.gif

(I'll probably bore everyone with this, but I got to add.. ^^ I know from reading her various comments that Arakawa-sensei has a soft spot towards a kind of naniwa-bushiish character that's often depicted in Edo era tabi-shibai (traveling theater company) play kind of stuff... the kind of character who looks unsophisticated and often gruff outside, yet inside is full of caring, and most often they are man/woman of few words.
And, I think in FMA manga, Pinako is one of the characters that typifies this most. So, that's my view of Pinako characters in FMA manga, and based on that, I really like series-2's Pinako dialogue so far, and IMO the wording and VAing of her in this episode was spot on. happy.gif I hope it comes out right in the sub. smile.gif )

And... I liked the preview part with Winry!! biggrin.gif
(Already looking forward to the next episode!! ^^)

I have to watch the episode again with better pic & sound for more comments. ^^

That scene where Ed was popping up all over the place in the Winry workplace reminded me of that episode of Inuyasha when Inuyasha was pestering Kagome while she was trying to study. XD (Can't remember which episode that was.) Since I read the manga, I could pretty much guess what they were talking about most of the time, but I can't wait to see it subbed.
