AKIRA (アキラ?) is a 1988 Japanese animated epic action film. It was written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, who based it on his manga of the same name.

Wow, well apart from being probably the biggest thing to bring anime into the American viewpoint, it is also a classic and should be viewed by anime fans if they want to find out why you can see anime in the West these days. Though the manga has a lot more story

KANEDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TETSUO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(repeat x 10)

This used to be what americans first thought of when they heard the phrase anime....before the dbz invasion and adult swim even existed.
(Now Americans think of dbz/naruto and hentai)

Personally, it was overrated ohmy.gif

A great movie on its own, but really didn't deserve to be the representative/definitive title for 'anime'.
It wasn't even the first anime i watched, but Akira fell under the "must-watch" category back then.

I definetly agree with Chiyo and Asunder that Akira has been influential in shaping the American view-point of anime and paving the way for anime in the West. I liked the themes that the movie presented, but I still need to read the manga which I heard is quite different from the movie. The esper children still creep me out though.

Wasn't there a Kanye West video that paid homage to Akira?

It was a fun film but I prefer Miyazaki films. Still, even if it is over hyped it's a film every anime fan should see.
