I wouldn't say all anime in general, (-thinking of Excel Saga-) but some series most definalty hint on philosophy. FMA really had me thinking throughout the series, while Chrno Crusade allowed me to see how limited time is, and along with the price of life.

I have nothing to add to this thread, except for:

"FMA made me think, yes. So did Ergo Proxy, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Night Head Genesis, and xxxHOLiC."

"Sir arche's Pokémon post rocks my dirty socks."

We're on page 2 already, and no mention of Evangelion, the granddaddy of all headshrinking anime yet?

Evangelion is so obvious and legendary it doesn't need mentioning.

Also FLCL has some pretty amazing symbolism, but not to the standards of NGE.

Feel free to go more indepth about the diffrent philosophies.
I'm really interesting in NGE as I haven't seen it yet (I'm toying with the idea of getting the platinum box set) but I have read quite abit about it.

I like how some series will present a Philisophical question but not really adress it with their views allowing you to come to your own conclusion.

For an easy example, FMA raised "What defines a Human?" but never really answered it. The Homunculus had bodies but no "souls" and thus Ed decided they weren't human but Al has a Soul and no body but Ed still counts him as Human.

Yes, I agree to that FMA is indeed a thought provoking anime...
With the anime questioning the value or definition of a human life..
and the movie also raises other ideas...
One such is the idea of an ideal world...
and the pursuit towards one...

Chrno Crusade reveals the value of time and the idea of dependancy on others and responsibility...

Another anime...in my point of view...
would be Saiyuki...
In my opinion...it is an anime that questions the importance of individuality...
interdependance and self-reliance..and even the idea of god...
It shows that creator's idea that god, while being omniscient and ever omni-present...(the idea of somebody is always watching)
Only watches and becomes a witness of our lives rather that "physically" helping us through obstacles..
Rather, he only watches and bears witness to whatever we do whether right or wrong..
and the onus is actually on every individual to do what they deems right.

hhmm..am i making sense... dry.gif

I'd walk like a total idiot
And sing like idiots do
And people would say "what an idiot,
He/She's an idiot through and through
And I'd plant an idiot's garden
And live in an idiot's house
A harmless grinning idiot
With my lovely idiot spouse.

Watch your habits, they become character.
Watch your character, it becomes destiny.

...well, considering that FLCL is pretty much a comedic remake of NGE, it should.

( ohmy.gif first post tongue.gif ) One of the reasons I love anime wub.gif is because it has characters that are too-human, it is easy to get related to them in some way. That why is easier to find more fan fiction of anime and manga rather than Tom & Jerry fan fiction (LMAO, nothing personal so dont argue about T&J ph34r.gif ). And not only the humanoid characters but also the circumstances and philosophy that we can look at it. I used in my Literature exam quotes from FMA about the concept of how a humang being is conformed and the meaning of death. In FMA we can focus in the concepts of the human conformed by three elements (so cool I love it). Other examples are Get Backers were you can see the importance of friendship (just my opinion ok , my opinion will not change the world), in Samurai X you can see the constant fight for an ideal life (if you really want something you must fight for it, in this case a peaceful life), and many other examples.... wink.gif

You compare all of anime to Tom & Jerry.... .-.

Death Note. Enough said. Anime hasn't quite gotten there yet, but Manga likes to trick your brain and kick it while it's down.

--------------------
Attention Manga Lust fans:
Lust is dead. Finished. Kaput. Joined the Choir Invisible. Roy Mustang incinerated her repeatedly until her Philosopher's Stone dried up and dissolved into nothingness ("Mu" for you Japanese cultural enthusiasts). And she will remain killed off, written out of the plot. Greed was reincarnated because Father saved his Philosopher's Stone and had a guinea pig on hand. Lust is gone. Stop trying to play God with the plot line and bring her back at every possibly junction.
In the event that Hiromu Arakawa can skillfully maneuver around this narrative plot hole, I will eat my words with a pinch of salt.

blink.gif (so weird that actually someone took iseriosly, the T&J stuff...) I am still sure that I can find better philosophical ideas in anime and manga, than in any other kind of animation.
