I have just one question about the movie:

Does its storyline/content mesh with the first FMA anime?

(The answer to this question will be the deciding factor in whether I go to see the movie when it hits the States. I'm an obsessive fan of the first anime, but I can't stand the manga/Brotherhood, so I'm only willing to see the movie if it fits with the version of FMA I love.)

If anyone can address this, thanks in advance for your answer!

The movie takes place during the Brotherhood anime.

But does that mean its events/references conflict with the first anime? Or is it more of a stand-alone thing that could comfortably be watched from the viewpoint of either, like Makoto Inoue's light novels?

(If it's inseparably Brotherhood-centric, I'm so not there.)

@Jordanna Morgan - Welcome to our board! Adding little more to RedAmaranth's post above ^^ the movie is set to take place around the timeline of manga chapter 45 (and equivalent period of Brotherhood episode), but the movie is created to be enjoyed by fans of any FMA series, and I think except one tiny reference to Brotherhood anime, the movie story itself is very much stand-alone, although very much a story within FMA world (using Alchemy, etc.) ...there are some things that are "similar" to what we see in Brotherhood anime, though not completely same, so the Brotherhood fans may notice the similarity, and these could become discussion points for Brotherhood fans after watching the movie, but FMA-1 fans may not notice. ^^ None of the Brotherhood-only characters are there, nor referenced in the movie (much to the disappointment of some Brotherhood fans, but I think this may make the movie enjoyable/relatable to all FMA fans). In fact, very few FMA characters are in the movie... only Ed & Al in larger roles, plus Roy, Riza, & Winry with limited roles, and Alex in a very brief scene. Most of the story in the movie centers around the movie-only character, Julia, but you will see lots of action scenes with Ed and Al, and judging from audience responses (Japanese blog entries, fan reviews, etc.) I read, many of "FMA-1 only" fans simply enjoyed watching Ed and Al taking actions (action scenes are very dynamic in this movie) in the big screen one more time. The character and set designs are not particularly FMA-1 nor FMA:Brotherhood. (You can see some examples of Ed & Al here) But... (I can't reveal where in the movie you will see this because that would be spoilerish but,) from what I heard/read, the Amestris Central HQ building you see in this movie is a carbon copy of Amestris Central HQ from FMA-1 anime (but you have to be watching it very carefully, else you may miss it. smile.gif )

Sorry, should have been more specific! I agree with Tombow. You should be able to enjoy the movie just fine, even if you do hate Brotherhood *epic sad face* Lots of awesome action scenes with the two brothers and the new movie characters.
It's awesome, wouldn't want you to miss out!

Thanks for that rundown--and yay! I'm so glad to hear they apparently gave consideration to the few of us who don't like the manga/Brotherhood.

Also, thanks for the welcome! To be honest, I haven't come around before because in the other places where I've tried to associate with FMA fans, the first anime (and consequently first-anime-only fans) are not treated well. dry.gif At this point, I'm fairly leery of being around the fandom at all.

(Yes, I did see that there's a board specifically for the first anime here. But I'm not sure whether it's used by people who are seriously fans of the first anime, or who just want to bash/complain about it.)

Thank you for answering questions about the movie, RedAmaranth! It's nice that it seems that the movie can appeal to those who like anime-1 over Brotherhood. happy.gif

@Jordanna Morgan Welcome to the board! And don't worry, I believe that on the whole we're mature here and there's no shunning of people who are a fan of one particular interpretation of FMA, be that FMA-1/FMA:B/Manga. I'm pretty sure that there are members here who hold the same opinions as you. hug.gif

On a similar note, it's great that no one has digressed onto this topic here thus far, but I'd like to take this chance just to leave a quick reminder that people should not to start anime-1 v. Brotherhood (v. Manga) discussions here in this thread! happy.gif We have threads such as FMA-1 Vs. FMA:Brotherhood Discussion: Comaparing FMA-1 anime series vs FMA:Brotherhood to conduct those sorts of discussions in.

I was just wondering, since Fma Brotherhood has been rated MA (15+), Whats this movie going to be rated? Will it Be MA (15+) Or another Rating?

That's an excellent question, EdokunEdo. biggrin.gif This movie is said to be quite "bloody" and depict some gruesome scenes, and there are some depictions of cruelty as well. Although, judging from reviews and blog entries, etc, many of these reports mention that the movie contains gruesome scenes, but I don't see reports saying these scenes scared them or accompanying "minor" audiences. So, I guess these scenes are watchable without being overly shocking. Hence, my best guess is that the movie might get the same rating as the Brotherhood anime or less? (since this is a movie, and the rating system for the movie applies, so maybe PG?)... although, in Japan, this movie is rated "G" for general audiences, and all ages are admitted, so it may get "G" in the U.S as well.

I can't ever imagine FMA being rated G in the States. At the very least it could be PG if the rating goes like the first series and if the violence is about the same as the first movie. Brotherhood though has continuously been rated TV14 and the occasional episode rated MA for mature. The rating system and customs here are MUCH different. Blood and such isn't a big deal at all for kids in Japan whereas here it would definitely scare the kiddies. I know way too many kids who get scared of the most ridiculous things now because of how much parents shelter them from any kind of violence. But my point is there's no way the movie will get a rated G in the States. XD

^ That's so true, Heza. biggrin.gif So, I would say Milos would probably get the same rating as Brotherhood. ^^

It is rated NC16 for blood spamming in Singapore. smile.gif
