I annoyed my sister for about a half an hour yesterday discussing what my favorite subtle moment may be, and while she chose the "I have someone I need to protect" scene, I decided with the phone scene that happened shortly after Riza's encounter with Pride. I just love how he knew something was wrong, even though she didnt' seem to be saying anything out of the ordinary, and he couldnt' even see how frazzled she was. I felt like it showed how well they knew one another that he was able to tell just from hearing her voice (not to mention her cute line after hanging up, something like, "How does he have such perfect timing?") And I'd be lying if I didn't say I've called my friends and opened the conversatoin by introducing myself as their "favorite flourist"

I also love the scene when he left Bradley's office and was frantically looking for her as well, just after he had found out about her transfer.

Itís good to see that this thread is active again. I missed the Royai discussions! biggrin.gif

Itís hard to choose my favorite subtle Royai moment, because there are so many great moments between them. And thatís what I love in the pairing, they donít need to be a romantic couple, but everyone knows that theyíre very important to each other.
So, I decided that my favorite moment is the phone call in chapter 72. I (just like RoyxRizaFan) love that Roy immediately noticed that something wrong happened, even though he just heard Rizaís quiet sigh. And Royís call calmed down Riza, she knew that heís always there for her. ^^

Oh, and I also like their little moment at the beginning of chapter 38, when Roy said ďIím glad youíre aliveĒ. And Rizaís response: ďIím sorry to have worried you, sir.Ē That scene also shows how worried Roy was when Riza didnít answer his calls.

And I found a new fanart by Chocolate Queen, so I thought Iíll post it here. smile.gif

<Quick translations: ~ T. >
Roy: Can I have a bite?
Riza: Yes, but I have another piece set aside for you, Colonel.
Roy: Nah, I like this one.

My favorite subtle moment..oh, jeez, its got to be the scene where Hawkeye comes back to collect her things. In Brotherhood, it was definitely the scene around episode 23-25 when they have that conversation in the car on the way to the safehouse.

And I also feel the excitement over Royai slowly dying, sadly....however, I am reading this BEYOND AMAZING fanfiction called "Quiet Crown" by mebh...those who have read it will understand what i mean. Seriously, it is just amazingly well written and thought out, and stays frightningly true to the characterizations of all the characters. Everytime I read it, I feel that sruge of Royai obsession flow through me again, ha ha.

Oh, fanart and Kitchan's capsummaries help keep the fandom alive for me as well. <3

I'm reading that fanfiction too. I think it's incredible. I don't know how I'm going to survive until the next chapter. There was only a week between the two most recent chapters and it felt like a lifetime.

Ah, wow! This scene. This was also one of my favorite scenes for sure. I can't believe it slipped my mind though. Anyways, like with the scene in chapter 62, I stared at it for the longest time before going on. Once I had that volume in my hands, I would carry it with me everywhere just in case I got bored and needed something to smile at. And personally, I think Brotherhood did a fantastic job with the scene.

LOL and Roy's "freakout" after his talk with Bradley. That scene in the manga actually made me lol (mostly the way other people were staring at him and way he was posed).

I second that recommendation! If you haven't read it, you absolutely need to. No words can describe how brilliant that fanfiction is (...including the word 'brilliant', I suppose).

Well, this is gonna be my first post in this thread...uhm...my most fav Royai moment, you ask??? Oh god, what a mean question...it is so hard to choose... I love ALL the Royai moments...

Well, I loved that scene where he yelled at her for loosing her will to live- you could see just how scared he was upon realizing that Riza had given up... and his "Thank you for being alive" later and her response to it...
Then the one where he frantically searched for her after finding out about her transfer, then the one where she came back to gather her things...
I also loved their "confession" in chapter 95, Beyond the Flames:

"Please, Colonel..don't go where I can't follow!"
[...]
"What will you do after I'm dead?"
"I have no desire to live a happy, carefree life all alone. After this battle is over, my body will leave this world together with the corpse of the Flame Alchemist"
"Unacceptable. I won't loose you, too."
[...]
"Lower your gun, lieutnant. I apologize"

The hug after Riza's throat had been cut open by those bastards...

And last but not least, the scene where he called her after her encounter with Pride. I loved how he immediatly realized that something was wrong- even without seeing her... smile.gif And Riza was right, he DOES have an awesome timing biggrin.gif

These are my favorites- I can't single out one scene! smile.gif

Ayla-- Hi! Glad to see yet another new face! Much as I love chapter 95 beyond most words, and I know it's pretty much Royai defined, I do have to say that, if you've read either Tombow's translation or Viz's English edition, you'll find that "Don't go where I can't follow" is a slightly more romanticized version of what was said. In all cases, Riza's imploring him not to sink to a level where he would commit animalistic revenge, but that particular "Don't go where I can't follow" version adds a little more... "classical" romance to the scene. The other translations (and the original) are done more in the spirit of not letting Roy ruin his dream more than ruining what he and Riza have, but I digress.... (But I'm not gonna lie--that particular translation still gets me every time. wub.gif )

Ah, the phone scene, Roy's freakout, the coded conversation, Riza "forgetting" things... they're all such great scenes! And all the big ones, and the hug--that just about made me die, I was so happy!

Hmmm... I'm gonna have to read "Quiet Crown" now.

Heeeey, I come back from a week of vacation and find that the Royai thread is going strong again! biggrin.gif I'm dead to the world right now after a 12 hour drive... but I'll contribute to the discussion as much as I can. happy.gif

It's hard to choose just one, but if I had to choose a favorite subtle moment, it would either be the phone call after Riza's encounter with Pride, or when Roy finds out that his subordinates (mainly Riza) have been reassigned. He looked as though his world had ended when he found out Riza was assigned as Bradley's aide.

Favorite subtle moment?? All of them are so kiwi I can't choose xD

But I guess it would have to be the one on chapter 95! The whole...
"Don't go where I can't follow" and
"I have no desire to live a happy, carefree life all alone. After this battle is over, my body will leave this world together with the corpse of the Flame Alchemist"

I was like screaming like a total fangirl! I know Arakawa-sensei didn't clearly say much about what kind of relationship they have...you know if it's (brother-sister, friend-friend, or romantic)
But when I read that line, the latter kinda came out strong! (for me anyways..LOL)
I mean she said that she doesn't have a desire to live a carefree life ALL ALONE right?
Cause' if you think about it "isn't she already alone? I mean she's single, she lives by herself (besides Hayate)...so without Roy she'll be alone? hmmm >xD.... and if she means alone without a friend that's impossible..she's got lots!" and I think it's safe to say that they aren't siblings. sleep.gif
Sorry if it's confusing...hope you can get what I'm saying...^^'

Oh, and I loved the start of episode 54...(you know the flashback of them at Ishbal) I literally held my breath when I watched it...and the music so didn't help either...it was breathtaking!! (Senju Akira rocks!)

I'll check out tombows tranlation...wait do you have a link to it? But even without the sentence "Don't go where I can't follow" I still think it's like a "confession" (I also thought that in the Anime and as far as I know, the tranlation there did indeed differ from the "classical romance" biggrin.gif Don't even know whether the first version I read of this chapter was like what I wrote in my last post... (as for now, I'm reading online scans, but I plan to buy all the volumes as soon as possible)) and it remains one of my most favourite scenes with them^^

Yes, you definitely have to read "Quiet Crown"!!! biggrin.gif

But here's an advice:
Prepare for angst and worry...
and for lots of crying on your part (I'd recommend a handkerchief^^)
And for having to trouble to express your true feelings in your reviews, because it's so brilliant (and that doesn't even come close to describing it, believe me^^)

And: prepare for the fact that it practically kills you waiting for the next chap biggrin.gif
I wish you fun reading! tongue.gif

EDIT!!!

@Michiyo: I love that pic...It's awesome^^

Yeah, people should be weary of online scanlations, they come out with absolute nonsense sometimes. tongue.gif

In Viz's vol 23 the conversation goes:

Riza: Right now your actions aren't for the good of the country or even your own comrades! Cold-blooded hatred. That's what's driving you! Please, Colonel...You mustn't take that path.

Roy: If you want to shoot me, go ahead. What will you do after I'm dead?

Riza: I have no intention of living alone. After this battle is over...I will erase my life along with the secret to the Flame Alchemy that's led good men to madness.

The last line is also mistranslated by scanlation groups as dying with the Flame Alchemist- meaning Roy, but again, they're "romanticising" it. But I have to admit I was happy to read the fan translation too when the chapter first came out online. xD

Thank you so much, A Pierrot's Aria for the transcripts of Viz's official English translations! ^^

told you so, and kept telling you so every single time someone brought that incorrect fan-translation as a "proof" for his/her opinion on our board...
Oh, thank god, I can finally rest my crusade to correct the "incorrect." (From now on, the only thing I have to do is just show Viz's translation. What a relief. Thank you, Viz. sleep.gif )

Now if only we can repair the damage already done by this overly imaginative fan-writing that gave incorrect (in a sense that that was not in the original raw) characterization of Riza to zillions of FMA fans who now claim that "Riza is weak" "Riza is dependent of Roy" "Riza has no life of her own" etc., etc. partly/mostly based on some totally incorrect overly creative fan-translations done by some fan-translator. sad.gif

Please don't get me wrong... I like reading fan-creations done by FMA fans myself, and I know many FMA fans, including many Royai fans enjoy reading such creations, including some fan-made scanlations, and I'm glad they enjoy such. ^^ The only problem I have is when some fans believed that was what the raw said and kept insisting carrying on discussions on his/her opinions of Riza's character that was erroneously formed, based not on what's in the raw but on some fan-creations. smile.gif

-------

Cough, sorry for the interruption. Now please go back to the discussions on our favorite subtle Royai moments! happy.gif

Btw, my fav subtle Royai moments are:
"it's going to rain" and
"they have taken my queen"
(along with many other which I can't remember at the moment ^^)

Ayla--Here's the link to the chapter 95 thread, and the first post contains all the information: http://www.fullmetal-alchemist.com/forums/...t=0&start=0

Yeah, chapter 95 was a freaking minefield translation-wise, but even the more true-to-the-original versions still have Royai, even if it's not "smacking you across the face with a 2x4" obvious. Put probably a little too simply, it's not that Riza couldn't live without Roy, but rather that she couldn't live with herself if she were to stand by and let Roy fail and use flame alchemy for senseless revenge. At least, that's what I get from it. But this is FMA, where the characters are as real as they come, so nothing's totally black and white. (<--One of eighty bajillion reasons why I love Royai in particular, and FMA in general.)

(EDIT: Dang it! Tombow, you ninja'd me by 2 minutes on Riza not being weak! Oh well. That's why you're the amazing Tombow-sama, mod extrordinaire!)

I've started reading "Quiet Crown", and I'm going to be honest: I find it rather weird. Maybe I wasn't in the right mindset to be reading it when I started. I like it, I guess, but there's something about it I can't quite put my finger on... I'm definitely going to keep reading it, though! It has me very intrigued!

I think one of my favorite subtle Royai moments is when Riza was packing to leave to be the Fuhrer's assistant. And Royai uses the analogy of her being his "queen" I always liked the way he held the chess piece, like it was Riza he was going to be missing the most.

I will have to start reading Quiet Crown. I have been looking for some Royai fanfics. I am glad this thread is being active again. I was afraid my Royai love was starting to dwindle. But it isn't anymore now that there will be a new FMA side story coming in September, there may be some Royai in it. The excitment is back for me!

@Tombow Haha! No worries, I'm glad the whole fiasco over translation can be put to rest. wink.gif

Just to be safe, I'm assuring everyone that my post has no spoiler content for the last chapter/episode. happy.gif

I actually forgot to mention my favourite subtle moments. I think they're definitely "it's going to rain today" and also the code scene, as well as the part where Riza gets her throat slit and she just gives him that look that tells him not to attempt transmutation. I love those parts the most because there are no explanations needed (or in some cases, no words needed at all) for the two to have a perfect understanding of each other.

And I hope the new Gaiden will have Roy and the gang in it, too. biggrin.gif
