The deep silence of the whole mansion was suddenly tore by the sound of breaking crystal. Vino stood there, somberly looking at the spilled wine almost as if expecting for the crimson liquid to turn into something...most likely blood.
She sighed angrily and plopped down in her leather chair. Sure, the job had been done, Brandigan was as dead as he could be -she WAS the Snake Charmer after all- and jobs like those were an everyday thing. But that didnt made the damn cut in her head less bothersome and the fact she had been knocked out less insulting. AND she never had a chance to get those documents. Suddenly her eyes narrowed lightly as for a second a not-so-pleaseant idea flashed through her head, but then she just inmediatly pushed it aside with a lazy chuckle "No way..." She mumbled skeptically as she stretched, now looking more calm.
She looked out of the window were all over Scalvia, the sirens where still heard "Seems part of the fun is over..." She whispered, not even looking worried. After all, there were still a lot of thing she had to take care of...starting from a few loose ends to tie and a few rats to kill.

(OCC: We are returning to the present, our little flashback is over, which basicly creates more contacts with the characters.)

4 Years Later

He could hear them talking, just behind the door, just within the reach of his hearing. Listening and making out every word was a struggle for his current mental condition, he couldn`t make out some words clearly, but the whole context was there. It would be only a matter of time before they would stop, before the torture would continue. Cromwell struggled in his restraints, but to no avail and wished he could end his own misery as he had no wish to go on dragging this pointless battle.... yet he survived, he gritted his teeth and did not say a word. The door swung open and briefly, drowned the dimly lit room with light before slamming shut and darkness swalloved everything....

Cromwell woke up, his eyelids opened sluggishly and he found himself in a bed with snow-white sheets. The world around him was a haze, he could make out a modest room around him and a window, that opened a view into the pitch-black darkness of Scalvia`s night. Off in the distance, there was a red glow of a burning city and the sounds of combat, that incoherently bombarded his senses.

He struggled to a seating position and stared at the bandages on his body, they were new, which lead him to conclude that he had at least made it to someone friendly enough to save his life. His eyes stopped to stare at a prescription bottle on the table, he could not tell what was in it, but he hardly cared as he quickly grabbed the bottle. After a moments struggle to open it, Cromwell finally managed to drop a few of the drugs capsules on his hand and swung them down his dry throat.

After painfully swallowing the medicine, he dropped the bottle, which crashed on the floor and broke into pieces. In an immidiate response, someone swung the door open and stared at Cromwell with a mix disbelief, joy and relief. One of Cromwell`s liutenants, Jackson, quickly paced his way to bedside and did not say a word as he began cleaning the broken bottle.

Cromwell, slowly placed his hand on the man`s shoulder and pressed as hard as he could, which was not much, to get the man`s attention. Despite the fact, that his world was a mix of haze, pain and weariness, Cromwell stared feverously at Jackson with his one good eye.

"Gather everyone, I mean, every single liutenant, soldier and smuggler that I employ.... I want to have a talk with them.... Also... prepare the ship... this city is coming to an end soon..."

Cromwell ordered crypticly, but Jackson`s protests and questions were silenced by Cromwell`s sudden collapse on the bed. Soon enough, the entire smugglers ring disappeared and so did their merchandise, effectively cutting off whatever supply existed for the war effort of the gangs, that were still capable of buying from the smugglers.

--------------

Blake had led the tricksters to The Pit to regroup and decide on their next action, Blake sat on a chair by the bar desk, but did not touch the alcohol there. That night the bar was quiet, dead quiet as there was a war raging on the streets. Blake seemed to be in thought, he seemed to be contemplating on their next move as they had lost Cromwell and had no clue as to his where-abouts.

Not that Cromwell mattered anymore, they were in accord that the agreement with Barrows was nullified when everything went to hell and that their next move would be to attack Barrows himself. Yet how? Barrows was inside a fortified mansion somewhere in the city, Falco had left a few place behind yet they couldn`t aimlessly start wandering the war-torn streets of the city.

Yet there certainly was a way to get to Barrows, who had a sizeable influence over the police force and some judges, whom Barrows seemed to think of as friends. By attacking something that was important to Barrows they might be able to drag the slimy-lawyer turned mob-boss out of hiding....

Lloyd sat at a bar in Scalvia. He seemed distressed, though his anxiety didn't seem to be caused by the chaos in the streets outside. He wondered why he came back to this city when it was in such a condition, but then again, he didn't care.

He felt slightly less lonely in a bar. Recently he had grown fond of places like this, though he realized that, no matter how many people were around, he was, in every sense of the word, alone.

To him, this was like any normal night; he would be spending every night at a bar until his money dried up- which would be soon. He sighed heavily and wondered where the hell his money went, though he knew the answer. He had truly become a part of this filthy city, no matter how much distance he put between himself and it. It was only a matter of time before he came crawling back- after spending all of his money in casinos and other frivolous places. With his oh-so-precious money, his life had been anything but dull in the past few years.

He looked around without really comprehending what was around him. With the streets being the way they were, he thought he should maybe leave, but he had no place to go even if he felt like leaving. He suddenly felt himself starting to have a panic attack, and downed his drink.

While Ashes was finishing his first cigarette -completly ignoring Blake's pondering- Roxanne was talking with the bartender in low whispers, there wasnt really a need for this since the bar was half-empty, it was only them, a few regular drunks and a boy who Roxanne gave an amused smile after a quick inspection.
"So...what's the big plan?" Ashes asked sarcastically as Roxanne came back to sit next them. "Look over there...seems an old friend is here to join us" She said to them as she nooded her head toward Lloyd, not even worrying about discretion.

Blake glanced suspiciously towards Lloyd, but grinned as he saw the thief, who seemed to be more concentrated on his drink than his surroundings, sitting nearby. The assassin grinned at the memory of the last time he had met the thief and an old scar on his shoulder began to ache as, if as a reminder due the memories triggered by the thief. Blake shrugged and rolled his eyes.

"None of my business, I sure as hell didn`t invite him here nor would I want him to join blunder our plans."

Blake shot back at her, attempting to ignore the thief as he could not see any practical use of teaming up with that fool again as he was completely helpless in a fight and could only rely on sneak attacks. Blake turned to stare forward and crossed his hands into prayer like position as, if he was considering their options. He began to speak with a distant voice and his eyes were staring right through the wall.

"If we want to send Barrows a message, then we need to strike him where it hurts, at his friends. We may not know where Barrows resides at the moment, but we know who his allies are. We go after them and Barrows will certainly be forced to intervine or else he will find himself all alone in a hostile city...

We start with the one place, that Barrows has been using ever since Falco died, the mansion where the big boss lived... I bet that Barrows himself is not there, but I also bet that place is filled with all kinds of riches and things of great value."

Blake said with a wide grin on his face as he wondered how Barrows would be outraged at the news of having the home of his late friend desecrated by the very people he had hired to work for him.

Suddenly both the thieves looked interested with the mention of "all kinds of riches and things of great value". Roxanne didnt even bothered in hididng a greedy smirk as she shook her glass softly, entertaining herself with the clink of the ice "Sounds good AND interesting to me. But...are you sure Barrow will just come running toward us instead of just sending someone else to kill us? After all, half the city is under his power. How much time do you think it'll be before we get all his "friends" and he's alone...IF we even get that far" She said, this time looking quite serious "I say we should save some time and just find the bastard" She whispered.
-------
Suddenly a soft knock was heard in Cromwell's door. Before he could even answer, the door was already opening, and in a cruel irony... Minerva Black walked in.

Blake seemed to consider her point for a while, but did not say anything at first, which inclined that he was actually taking her opinion seriously for the first time. True enough, Barrows was powerful, but he was at war and it would be a bloody struggle before one could be crowned king of Scalvia`s underworld. Then again he reckoned that the two mafia families managed to confine Barrows enough to keep Barrows at bay yet no doubt he would at first send killers after them. Finding Barrows more covertly certainly sounded safer, but then again it would take time and effort as their rescources were scarce. They needed to play smart, smarter than Barrows, Cromwell or Vino, if the latter two chose to engage Barrows in any manner. What they needed was tools, that they could exploit and ultimately get to Barrows.

Blake blinked and turned to stare straight at Lloyd with his stare drilling right into the cranium of the thief.

"On the other hand I really think it is our business..." He said to the tricksters with wide smirk on his face. "We donīt need to reveal ourselves or intentions to Barrows per se, but dead men tell no tales. I say we attack the mansion, but without any flashy fireworks. No one needs to know, who or what happened at there, tough they might speculate yet if they can`t find us then they can`t really confirm that it was truly us, now can they?"

Blake proposed the recruitment of Lloyd into their group and also decided to approach the situation with `kill everyone` attitude so that they could never be implicated for the crime.

------------

By the time Minerva arrived, Cromwell had managed to sober slightly from his weariness and was now sitting on his bed with a sour expression on his face. In his right hand was a revolver, held tightly within the palm of his hand, but it laid harmlessly on the bed. Cromwell had changed his clothes, he now wore a snow white collar-shirt, dark brown pants, which had greeish suspenders holding them up, and he had ripped off the bandages surrounding his head, visibly displaying the fresh, redish scars. His right eye was faintly white, due to the loss of vision and seemed unconcentrated due to the torture, the eye`s surroundings had severe third-degree burn.

The left eye stopped at Minerva as she strolled into view, the eye reflected all the anger, annoyance and frustration that were consuming Cromwell from within. With a sour expression on his face, Cromwell spun the cylinder, which was currently unloaded and pressed the barrel of the gun against his own head before pulling the trigger. The gun clicked, over and over again as Cromwell pulled the trigger.

"Every time I wish I had loaded this gun so that I wouldn`t have to endure this tedium...." Cromwell began with his voice riddled with disappointment, at himself and how everything had spiraled down to this point. His one-good eye wandered around the room before locking itself on Vino again. "What do you want now, Minerva?" Cromwell asked and followed the question with heavy sigh as he was clearly not in the mood for games, going as far as to address Vino by her first name.

"Not our style..." Ashes mumbled, "...but we can do it" Roxanne said as she softly raised her glass in a mocking toast. "So, I guess this means we have a plan, now we just tie the few loose ends" Ashes said, clearly agreeing for both of them about Lloyd's recruitment.
----------
Vino's usual confident expression changed to one of surprise and even confusion as Cromwell talked, and when he finished a deadly silence drowned the room as she just stood there looking at him, almost as if trying to figure out what was he thinking. "I don't suppose a heartfelt apology would do" She mumbled sarcastically -clearly trying to hide her bewilderment- as she walked around the room, pretending to be interested in her surroundings.
"You know...when I was a little girl my father once told me that if you weren't careful, you could lose everything you've ever earned in life in a split second...-You have to know when to cash out- he always said" She whispered as she abstenmindedly ran her fingers through the furniture "But then I think, what exactly can I lose? My life most likely, but death is an everyday thing for us...it's in every corner" She said "My integrity perhaps? It sells for so little and I dont have it anymore" She mumbled as she chuckled softly, quite amused by the thought.
She remained silent for a second as she looked out of the window "Guess there isnt much to lose" She mumbled, before she shighed in annoyence after that, almost as if tired of her own rambling.
She turned around toward him, now frowning, looking frustrated with her own momment of weakness. "Anyway...let's just get the cards on the table: things have changed since you were...away. A war is about to start and I think we can help eachother" She mumbled bluntly as she walked toward him "Dont want to sound cliche but...it's time to choose sides" She whispered as her trademark smirk slowly creeped into her lips, showing old familiar Vino "So, what do you say? Shall we do it for a old times sakes?"

Blake nodded quietly and got up from his chair, walking straight to Lloyd and sitting next to him without any greeting.

"Run out of money lately?"

He inquired with a smirk on his face and a dagger in hand as a precaution, the blade was entrenched against Lloyd`s ribs so that, if he chose to make any problems then he wouldn`t have long to live with pierced organs.

--------

Cromwell`s eye was locked on Vino and the sour expression remained on his face, but he stopped playing with the revolver and instead reached for the bullets at the table next to the bed. As she spoke, Cromwell began slowly dropping the bullets in the cylinder and when done he spun the cylinder around. Without a word Cromwell suddenly seemed to be getting ready for something, he placed the revolver into his belt and reached for the night table for an eyepatch, that had been provided to him. He carefully placed the eyepatch over his blind eye and stopped to stare at Vino with a determined look in his eye.

"I am not done playing, I still have my ace in the hole."

Cromwell revealed with a deadpan expression on his face, but there was a sudden determination about him as he got up and reached for a jacket hanging on the wall, next to him. He put the jacket on with a wide grin on his face as the wounds ached with almost every move he made, but that did not phase him. Ignoring Vino, he walked towards the door, but stopped as, if deliberating her offer. He glanced over his shoulder at Vino, acknowledging her presence again.

"I don`t care about alligiances nor sides, not that they will matter anyway once this is over. I knew exactly what I have gotten into, true there was a minor flaw in my plans, but there are things people have not taken into account.... anyway what I will do is none of your concern... but it`s not like I will be going against you, but I will say this... before it`s all over, you will thank me for what I am about to do."

Cromwell replied crypticly, apparently not wanting to take sides as he seemed to know more than he was revealing.

Lloyd turned to the man who had just sat next to him. He blinked and furrowed his brow, trying to figure out if he knew this stranger.

"Blake?" he finally asked, his face slowly showing recognition. He gave a crooked smile and laughed. He looked down at the blade, then back up at Blake. "Hey now, is that the way you greet me after all this time? Still serious business with you, I see. Hahah."

Lloyd had no idea why he was so light-hearted at the moment; it may have been the (pleasant or unpleasant) surprise of seeing a familiar person, or it may have been the drinks. Or a combination of the two.

He grinned wider, and finally answered the question. "Why, yes I am. Thank you for noticing." Then his smile suddenly turned dark and slightly sarcastic, "Though I don't suppose you're going to give me any for free?"

Blake grinned, annoyed by Lloyd unexpected light-heartedness, but simply shook his as answer to his question. The thief was hopeless as before, he was being dragged through the mud and hardly getting by, like some kind of vermin that only crawled out of it`s hole at night.

"I have an offer for you." Blake began and threw a freezing glance at Lloyd as, if to check whether he was smiling or not. "There is a certain mansion filled with riches, it`s protected and I need someone, who is a good sneaksman. We slip into the mansion, kill everyone quietly and so that no one knows, who did it. Then we rob the place blind and disappear, sounds fair? You can split the loot with those two over there."

Blake collaborated and before finishing, nodded towards the tricksters, who were sitting some feet away from them.

Lloyd didn't seem focused as he glanced at the two tricksters then looked back at Blake. He seemed incredulous about being given such an opportune offer, though he was more than willing to accept.

"I appreciate the offer. Though I hope you know that I'm stronger than that helpless kid you met way back when, and you won't have to rescue me this time," he almost laughed a little bit. In the past few years, Lloyd had gained a new approach on life (which was easy when carrying around a gun). He eventually stopped feeling bad about cheating, stealing, and killing. His eyes were that of a man who was tired of feeling anything, and most definitely tired of living. Any shred of youthful spirit that he may have had years ago was now gone.

"Kill everyone and steal everything? Hm." He mused, leaning back and looking up at the ceiling. After a moment, he turned back to Blake and said, "It sounds a bit vague, but I certainly would enjoy helping you out with that."

"So...this means we're all set now?" Roxanne asked, as Lloyd and Blake would suddenly find the tricksters comfortably sitting in the same table.
------
Vino just stood there, looking at him with an expression that alternated between boring indiference and frustration. "Fair enough" She mumbled as she looked at her nails almost as if trying to find non-existent dirt in them. "Well, then I guess this is it. Since it's most likely one of us will die I guess this is goodbye...sad yet true. Let's just hope the devil DOES look after his own" She said, happily amused with the thought, before she turn around and walked away.

Blake glared at the duo, but did not say a word, he didn`t trust them yet then again he never strusted anyone. There was no telling how they might betray him when things got sticky, but for the moment all he could do was push forward and hope that everyone would be able to keep their part of this deal.

"Yes, we do not need any equipment save for blades and a vehicle, which we conveniently possess. I know where the mansion is and I would suppose, that you two are acquinted with the sewers more than well? As always they might prove the best route to use in getting on the inside, if not, we will have to climb over the wall and stick to the shadows while we are doing it..."

Blake said, expecting some sort of collaboration about the sewers layout.

(You can have your characters basicly lead them to the mansion and enter it etc.)

-----------

Cromwell smirked slightly as he watched her walk away, he had a feeling that they would meet again before the end and that feeling led him to believe, that it would be him lying in a pool of his own blood. He shook such thoughts from his head and headed downstairs, to a warehouse large hall where all of the member of his guild were gathered. As he stepped into view there seemed to be a wave of relief mixed with horror, that swept over his subordinates. The lieutenants were lined up, closest to him with the rest of the criminals standing in a mob farther away.

Cromwell sighed heavily and scratched his head with a bothered expression on his face, he blinked and in that moment his eyes transformed. That hazy, tired expression was gone, replaced by cold look that chilled to the bone.

"You know, I am truly glab to be back, but I can`t say that I am not also happy that I was away. Despite being betrayed by Gracio and being subjected to horendous torture by him, I am still glad that it happened, it gave me something that I simply could not buy. That is perspective."

Cromwell paused and drew his gun, pointing it at the mob, slowly trailing back and forth as, if he was going to shoot someone on a pure whim. The fear registered on most faces, some of the men even backed away and were almost ready to flee, the one`s with most to loose. Cromwell clicked back the hammer and grinned.

"I learned that each and everyone of you has a motive, a purpose by which you serve me. You want money, power, excitement, a life-style or you are simply put unable to live another kind of lives, but that`s okay.... it`s fine I understand, that some of you have families and loved one`s, whose livelyhoods depend on the work you do for me..... so... can someone explain me what was the motive of Gracio, my mosttrusted lieutenant, to betray me?"

His shoulder collapsed and the gun pointed downwards as his voice became charged with anger, but he did not move an inch, simply glared at everyone. When no one seemed to be willing to answer, Cromwell walked up to Morrison, an underboss in the guild.

"You`ve been with us long enough to know, haven`t you Morrison? What made that big bastard tick? I apparently didn`t spend enough time around him to notice a change, you must have, I heard you were quite good buddies." Cromwell inquired, bringing his face close up.

"Cro... no, I don`t...." Morrison began, but stumbled in his words and looked away.

"I hear he had some connections with the Jarcov`s..." Began another lieutenant, Meyer, one of those that always looked twitchy and unreliable in any kind of situation imaginable.

"No kidding?! And since when did you tell me of this?!" Cromwell shouted at Meyer, but did not turn his glare away from Morrison on whom he was pinning the blame on.

"It was just...." Morrison stumbled again.

"A rumour?" Cromwell hissed between his teeth and revealed his teeth.

"But...!" Meyer tried to interrupt.

Cromwell shot Meyer right in the kneecap with the man collapsing under the sudden pain of the bullet shattering his balance, Meyer reached for his gun, but Cromwell stomped on his hand, crushing two fingers. Meyer screamed in pain as Cromwell began to flip the revolver in the air with a crazed look in his eyes.

"It`s the filthy one`s always trying to come up with the excuses.... aren`t they? So if I am a sewer rat, then what does that make you and Gracio? Hmh? Cockroaches? The lowest type of vermin? Yet frankly I don`t give a damn! Not anymore! There are only those who are loyal to the bitter end and those who care about themselves.

The man on the top has to care about himself, but when subordinates start to exhibit it, too much, then there is rot in the house. I think this house has started to rot away, I think we either repair it or build a new house. Repair it, then it will have to be repaired again in a few years and do that again then it will no doubt collapse on your stupid, f*!@ing head!"

Cromwell shouted as he gloomed over Meyer, who was writhing in pain. Cromwell grabbed Meyer by the chin and pressed the gun against the man`s forehead, pulling the hammer back.

"I say it`s time I bought a new house, but before that I am going to demolish this old one.... now then Meyer, I know about your connection to Barrows and all the money he`s been feeding you. In fact I allowed it because I knew that you wouldn`t be able to kill me nor fool me, so I started to feed false information through you and it worked like a charm up until the point where Gracio turned on me.

It`s about time I sent a message to that slick, lawyer f*!@er."

Cromwell said before firing the five remaining bullets into Meyer`s face, the man was dead before he knew what hit him and the people around Cromwell looked on in horror. Cromwell kicked the corpse, further unloading his seething anger, then glared at Morrison.

"Make sure he is taken to the city square and put up for display with a message to Barrows so that he realizes what`s going on. Play times over, it`s time we check who has the better hand."

Cromwell began walking back to the stairs, from where he had began his speech.

"The rest of you have two choices, stay and I will guarentee your safety or leave and never appear before me again."

A heated discussion began in the room as Cromwell sat on the stairs, flipping his gun around in the air and catching by the handle. Slowly the rats and the cockroaches made their split, almost half of them had prove to be the worst vermin on the planet, they would not live long anyhow.
