What FMA is really about, eh? Hmm... that's actually a very nice question.
It's a story of the human will - how far someone is willing to go for something, and how our will can help us to accomplish or to sustain through something... It's about love and how it can be a source of greed, and how that same love can be innocent and pure and righteous... It's about redemption, achievement, and sacrifice, and how morality plays a strong hand in how we go about each...

It is about teaching everybody about how all the decisions we make affect us in a big way. Also that life is far from being a fairy tale, therefore not everything will go the way we expect it to go.

The FMA series is about teaching people that life won't go as the way that you had expected it to go because there are a lot of obstacles out in the real world that you have to be prepared for, and that the truth hurts (
In Eds case about the Philosophers stone, it REALLY hurt
) It is teaching to always look for a different choice than the obvious to obtain what you truely want in life, to be a little different than what everyone else is doing. It has taught me a lot is all I can say for sure

To me, really, the series means many things. It really depends on how you look at it, and what the situation is. But I think a strong meaning laced into the series is that life is unexpected, and you just have to go with it while doing your best to help bad things turn into good things, and protecting those you love.

To me, it is a story of life and death...how life is and how to maintain the balance...alchemy: the fore-runner of chemistry in medieval times. to me, and as far as i understand, in this anime, i think they want to explain to us about equivalent exchange in life...like, the elric brothers: the had to give = alphonse's whole body, and edward's right arm and left leg = to save their mother....
alright, in simple:
STORY OF LIFE AND DEATH, AND EQUIVALENT EXCHANGE! that's it!
