Please post the discussions on episode 8: "The Philosopher's Stone" here. smile.gif

Alright guys, what did you think of tonight (1/1/05)'s episode?

Once again, as throughout much of the series Ed is confronted with the ugliness of human nature.

You have things like episode 6 which show the beauty, love, and significance of human life, than you have ones like 7 and 8 which show the more raw, tragic, and evil side of human nature.

Ed and Al are just kids that are forced to see these things at an age younger than they should, but they they continue regardless and keep their bond and remain strong for each other.

That is just one of the many reasons why I love this series.

I really liked this episode

Extremely minor spoilers:
Of course it was odd to see Barry the Chopper this way as I only saw how he was in the manga.
And at this point I can't say how different his character will be from his manga version, so I am not sure if I will end up liking his anime counterpart just yet.

I loved how Ed was shown as helpless and scared, you don't get to see this with most main characters.

The only thing I didn't like was Winry seemed to get over her ordeal a little too quickly.
I don't know I think if you and your friend were almost killed by a crazed serial killer you would be pretty shaken up. I know I would be.

But overall this episode was worth the wait.

Ah, I think Winry was fine, she didn't get hurt or anything, just some scuffed wrists.
She didn't get chopped up into pieces like those other poor women.
Though she had a clear moment of vulnerability at the end.
Thought it seemed more about her concern and worry over Edward...because...well you know rolleyes.gif .

The reason it hurts is because the auto-mail is connected to his nervous system.

Its very painful when the auto-mail gets jacked in.

Winry was shaken up though, didn't you see her standing with the military after they found Barry's hideout?

Plus, that last scene probably took place some amount of time later, so she had some time to recover.

She obviously didn't want a bad mood to spoil the short amount of time should have with Ed so he could buy her lots of presents.

Ed is still a 12 yo boy, so it didn't surprise me when I first saw this episode, he'll get tougher as the series goes on though.

When I saw the part where Ed asked that guy with the wig a question, I thought he already killed Winry, I was like, T_T.

As for the scene Ed giving up fighting, shoot, I would've fought back.

Especially, with an Auto-mail Arm and leg, one hit would've probably knocked that butcher out. :/

Well after watching it again, she did seem a little more shaken up than I first thought.

And you are right that final scene probably did take place some time after the incident.

But I still think Ed's reaction was more accurate for that type of situation.

i once wrote that ed was a little wimpy for crying but i take it back!

i just realized yesterday when i watched the episode that what makes this anime so great is that the main character isn't a big tough, macho guy.

he is human just like the rest of us, which gives him every single right to cry.

I kinda wonder though, why didn't Scar leap out then and there?
Did he respect Ed in some way?
Or was he not sure what the silver watch meant?
We see later that he doesn't really care about witnesses too much seeing how he attacks in plain sight later in the series...

As far as full metal:
I swear they did that just to give people a reason to get Ed confused with Al and make Ed angry

Scene form future episode:
Soldier: "It's an honor sir!"
Soldier: "Whoa, he has a real presence just like his name suggests!"
Soldier: "Welcome, Full Metal!"
Al: "Actually..." ::points to Ed, sulking::
Ed: "I'm used to it..."
Soldier: "I didn't think such a shrimp could-"
Ed: "Wha?"
(I hope they do this one line right in the dub tongue.gif)
Soldier: "Eek, nevermind, anyway..."

One of my favorite parts

Get used to it Panzer Dragoon, because IMO it is that dichotomy that makes FMA the fantastic show that it is.

And just as a warning, the show is going to get a lot darker and twisted later on.

Episode 8 is a good episode after 7.

It really shows a decision process in Ed.
He had to overcome his comfort zone again and now has to make a decision regarding his determination for his goals.

I can only think that Scar was still coming to grips with his mission at that time, so he wasn't ready to be out in the open yet.

Oh and the funniest stuff is still yet to come. So don't worry, it doesn't all go away.

I'll add some ideas...

When Ed took a swipe at Al, I kinda freaked.
Think how much more traumatic it would be for Ed if Al wasn't in that armor suit.

Wonder where the butcher got his wig...

About that other alchemist who knocked out Ed.
He is the something general and known as the Iron Blood Alchemist.
Wonder where/how he got that name...

BUT I bet for those who watched English subbed Japanese episodes, ya already knew that...

The guy that knocked Ed out was Brigadier General Basque Gran.
And as for why he's called, "Iron Blood," well you'll find out later wink.gif .

Its not important where Barry got the wig, he could've gotten at a costume shop or made it out of the hair of his victims, its an insignificant detail.
Its like where Ed got a new red coat after the one he had was all torn up in the first episode.
