What's the significance of the tattoo again

The main significance of Riza's tattoo is that it is her father's work, since he was the one who came up with the array for Flame Alchemy. Roy, in being her father's student, learned alchemy under Hawkeye-sensei but was never taught Flame Alchemy. Once Hawkeye-sensei died, Riza passed the information to Roy, who managed to decode the tattoo and utilize the array in order to create his flames.

So, aside from providing Roy the knowledge to master Flame Alchemy, the tattoo itself has bonded Roy and Riza together, as she was responsible for creating the 'Flame Alchemist'.

(This is basically the cliff notes version of the actual explanation...)

So, when he burned it, could that have symbolized some sort of broken bond?

...Sorry, that was an extremely curious question.

Well, considering he burned it at Riza's request, I'd be inclined to say no, though I can see where that would come from. Although, it might not be a broken bond between them, but perhaps between being sheltered and innocent and coming to see the cold, cruel world for what it is.

I dunno. Just throwing that out there. I just don't see how that would do anything but strengthen the bond between them, if not at all in the happiest of ways.

The only bond that was broken was the bond between Riza, her father and his alchemy. She wanted to break the bond between herself and her father.

No, when Roy burned the tattoo at Riza's request, the only bond that was severed was Riza's bond to both her father and her father's work. By burning her back, breaking that particular bond, Roy allowed Riza Hawkeye to live as Riza Hawkeye, completely free of being her father's living, breathing bearer of his alchemy.

@FailtoImpress: Can you tell me what the fanfic was called?

No problem! (I really should have said anyway lol)
The first fic is called We That Are Young, and the sequel is called Shall never see so much.

^That's her page.

I recommend them if you haven't already came across them before, I've never read anything quite so in-depth. happy.gif It was at least a year ago I started reading (when she put out a chapter a day) so I'm going to go back and read it all again soon.

Ohh I've heard of that story, but haven't got the chance to read it yet. I have a large list of Royai fanfics that I'm making my way through, but maybe I'll push that one to the front of the list, if you say it's that good! biggrin.gif

As for Papa Hawkeye....... err Berthold...... being blonde, he could be a dirty blonde? laugh.gif And were his eyes blue? That threw me off as well.

Don't think so. I think is quite the opposite, actually, in this case.

It made their bond be unique, since now Riza will never be able to pass the secret of Flame Alchemy to anyone else.

After seeing subtitled episode 30 I must say it's not as unsatisfying as I thought it to be. Maybe because I didn't expect more... more scenes, more persons being involved... Roy talking to Berthold ( laugh.gif ) Hawkeye sensei in the beginning was great, as well as Riza and Roy before Berthold ( laugh.gif ) Hawkeye's grave, as well as Edward's confusion at Mustangs plan (didn't understan a bit while watching it first). So while I miss a few things I'm optimistic again, looking forward to 31, knowing BONES can do better and will do better in the futere.
Did you notice that in the first eyecatch young Riza finally looks like her manga self?

Not looking forward to read 101 but expecting it... I'm so afraid!

I guess Papa Hawkeye is more of a dirty blonde. I always was under the impression that he had the same color blonde hair as Riza.

As for Papa Hawkeye, I always pictured him as light-blonde haired and blue eyed... Although I think this description may also be from that fic I mentioned, I can't remember fully but I'm sure he was.

I always pictured him as sort of a dirty blonde...

And I always thought his name would be James, for some reason.

Papa Hawkeye might very well have been a lighter blond when he was younger. My older brother started out quite blond, but now his hair is the same shade of... light brown, actually, as mine.

In any case, the thing I always thought Riza and Papa Hawkeye shared most was the eyes. Probably partially due to the name, but even just with the way they're drawn, I get the feeling that if one or the other was looking at you, even normally, you'd kinda get the creeps. (*is totally guilty of writing such things into her fanfiction, especially concerning Roy*)

The thing that weirded me out most was noticing that Roy seems to have blue eyes. Like, in the beginning of 95, on the colored pages. He's got blue eyes. Light blue, too. I had never taken him for blue-eyed 'til I kept on seeing it. Now, nothing else seems right!

Really? I never thought Roy would suit brown eyes anyway... even though his eyes mostly look black in anime I always knew that they were blue lol. Maybe that's just cause I like blue eyes. tongue.gif

I don't think he has blue eyes, but rather, since his eyes are dark, once light reflects off of it, they look blue.

Nah. Those eyes are darker than black and the blackest eyes that ever exist.
That's anime. Some people have purple hair and pink eyes =D. So black eyes are... normal, I guess...
