Complaining about old times, Ed and Al are scolded by Izumi who is more concerned about the little boy standing at the edge of the forest.
Trying to comfort the boy, Izumi asks his name and where his parents are, but he replies that he doesn't know. Embraced by Izumi, the child is comforted and stops crying.
Unable to accept the fact that Izumi has not forgiven Ed and Al for going against her teachings, Winry makes her way to confront Sensei, but she is held back by Ed and Al.
That night, Ed sneaks into the child's room only to find him hanging upside down by the window. While he wants to play, Ed wants to ask the child some questions. However, the child gets excited and beings to bounce around the room.
In order to stop him, Ed creates a rope from the bed to tie down the child's feet. Unforgiving, Ed refuses to untie the rope and asks the child to undo it with alchemy instead. He panics and the entire bed is transmutated.
Unable to sleep because of the noise, Izumi bursts to find that the child transmutated to the bed. She seems to have a good understanding of the child and calms him easily. Telling him to remember his original form, he is able to become normal again.
Finally, Ed reveals that he and Al are being pursued by Homunculus.
Back in Central, Scieszka accuses Mustang of not being able to face Hughes's family because he cannot pursue Hughes's murder case. She hands Mustang copies of all the books Hughes was looking at the night he died.
Talking with Envy, the Fuhrer's secretary tells Envy to head to Dublith to search for Ed and to leave Greed to Lust and Gluttony.
Back in Dublith, Ed and Izumi talk about the Homunculus and why they may be after him. The discussion leads to the child and his ability to perform transmutations without a transmutation circle. Izumi then asks Ed whether or not he remembers the gate.
All Ed remembers is that it felt like a massive amount of information was being forced into his head. He says it felt like he was just a step away from the complete theory of human transmutation.
Back in the shop, Ed realizes that he can still make it in time to save his little brother. Sacrificing one of his arms, he affixes his little brother's soul to a body of armor.
Even though Ed believes that was the "truth", Izumi does not. Dropping the subject, she tells Ed that there is something she wishes to confirm. Afterwards, they will discuss the matter further. Outside, her husband realizes that Ed and Al don't know why a Homunculus is born.
Back at Central, Mustang's subordinates are unpacking, and they find out that Hughes's replacement is Lieutenant Colonel Frank Archer a man who likes wars.
In Izumi's house, Al makes a shocking observation. Ed saw the child's face across the gate, and the child seems to have Ed's lost limbs.
Ed, in a rage, demands to know where the child got his scar figuring it came from the fox that bit him while he and Al were on that island. Breaking free, the child breaks through the window and escapes.
Ed chases the child through the streets and unbeknownst to him is watched by a mysterious man from above. On the island, Izumi is disturbed by her findings.
